Personal Description: My name is Sarah Foster. I am 27 years old and from Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. I am currently residing in Manchester with my husband, Chris, while he attends school at the Nazarene Theological College in Didsbury. We have been married since March 2007 and moved to the UK in September 2008. I have been involved in music since the age of eleven when I began playing flute in my school band. At the age of fifteen I joined my school's choir and have been singing ever since. I studied Music/Vocal Performance at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma. While there I completed coursework in music theory, vocal literature and diction, vocal pedagogy, music history and a brief course in conducting. Alongside my coursework I was also involved in three operas: Beth Moss in Aaron Copland's 'The Tenderland', Amy March in Mark Adamo's 'Little Women', and Lucy in Gian-Carlo Menotti's 'The Telephone'. I was also a member of the by audition-only SNU Chorale, as well as the SNU Choral Society which performed larger choral works such as 'Messiah', Durufle's 'Requiem', and Bach's 'Christ lag in Todesbanden'. In addition, I was the lead soprano for the musical public relations group 'Exalt!', which traveled a 4-state area giving concerts and promoting the university and performed two solo recitals as part of my coursework. In my spare time I enjoy learning to cook, watching movies, spending time with my husband, friends and family, traveling and learning about new cultures. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience in teaching students ranging in age from 4 years old to 75 years old. I spent one year teaching pre-school music and dance at Miss Helen's Private School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Miss Helen's is an exclusive school for ages 2 1/2- 4th grade. In my class there we explored beginning music and movement as well as the very beginnings of tap and ballet. I also spent one year teaching private voice lessons and a few beginning piano students at Saied Music in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Over the year I taught 20 voice students of varying ages and levels of talent and experience. I required all of my voice students to read music, not just sing by ear and if they came to me not knowing how that is where we began our time together. We explored many different types of music including Disney tunes (for the younger, inexpreienced students) to broadway, to german and italian art songs. With some of my vocal students and all of my piano students I went through a music theory book, which proved very helpful in furthering their music-reading skills and connection to the music itself, and also improved the speed at which they learned their pieces. |
Tutoring Approach: When beginning with a student I like to first assess where they currently are as far as skill, natural ability, etc., as their is obviously no need to begin at the front and waste time repeating lessons already thoroughly learned! I prefer working with students one-on-one as opposed to a classroom setting, which is why I ended my time as a pre-school teacher and moved on to private lessons. I find it is more productive and there is a greater attention to detail that cannot be achieved in a classroom. As well, it helps me to adjust how I am teaching something to a student- if they learn better from books, from doing, from hearing- I can work with that. I like to use a curriculum and then work around that planned course of teaching to suit a students needs. I would like to note that it is helpful for you to have a piano or keyboard in your home if you are requiring voice or beginning piano lessons (ages 5-12), as I do not have one in my home at this time. If you require beginning music theory it is helpful to have a keyboard or piano at hand, but not absolutley necessary all the time. |

Personal Description: I am currently studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I love reading, writing and reading some more. I also enjoy sketching while listening to music. I am a frank person, have an straightforward approach to everything in life and like people to behave the same way with me (which always does not happen). I love to have a laugh, but don't worry, I can be serious when needed( for example, when teaching your children English and History). |
Teaching Experience: While I have never tutored for money, I have an extensive tutoring experience. I volunteered to teach illiterate students English as a part of a volunteering program from my high school in India and have been a part of that program for the past two years. I also used to tutor my two siblings in History, Geography and English. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that children learn best in a stress free environment. If they feel it is fun and challenging, they will be more willing to learn than if they feel it to be an obligation. English is an easy subject and children enjoy learning it, once they realize the joys that English has to offer. History can be challenging due to the vast amounts one has to learn by heart but steady habit of writing down answers to questions helps more than reading the material ten times. Other than that, History is a vastly interesting subject which helps us understand the workings of the present society and of course, knowledge about our ancestors. Geography is relatively straightforward subject. A lot of practice and a dedicated perusal of it should be enough to get good scores. While it can be relatively dry, it can be made interesting with pictures and videos.I focus on exam technique, past papers as well as text work (English Lit.) |
Qualifications:
I scored 91 out of 100 in English in the Indian equivalent to A-levels of U.K and got accepted to The University Of Edinburgh based on this mark. |
In History and Geography I got 85 out of 100 in the same exam. |

Personal Description: I am highly qualified in music and maths. I studied Astro-Physics for a year at London University before switching to study music. My PhD in Composition at the University of Liverpool ended up being half maths and half music. I studied Godel's Theorem and used maths as an aid to composition. This means I am expert at using maths to solve problems which is a core syllabus requirement for all exam boards. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored in maths and music for 25 years. I have a 100% pass rate for students who have taken maths GCSE. I have attended courses in child protection. |
Tutoring Approach: My teaching style is to help students understand maths, enjoy concepts in maths and apply the knowledge they have learned to pass exams. I am an excellent choice as a tutor as I am patience, have an excellent grasp of the subject and I am able to teach my knowledge to others in an effective way. |
