All of my children attend UK independent schools and I have extensive experience in this sector. I have helped students prepare for and succeed in gaining entry to top UK selective schools at 4+, 7+, 11+ and 13+. I have also successfully helped students obtain full academic scholarships to several independent schools as well as helping those secure a place who find exams difficult. All lessons are online via Zoom. |
Teaching Experience: Qualified from the University of Cambridge with a PGCE. I taught for two years at Queen's College Preparatory School, London before starting private tuition. | Personal Description: I am a fully qualified Science Teacher, with a BSc Hons. in Physics and the Post Graduate Certificate in Science Education from York University. I have more than 8 years experience of teaching pupils 1:1 in Maths and Physics. I have a patient and enthusiastic style. I focus on developing pupils' confidence and understanding, modifying the content of each tutorial and my teaching style to suit each student's individual needs, their abilities and progress in the subject. Covering many examples, practice questions and past papers together, I ensure students consider and understand the examiners requirements and expectations. Using many other revision and exam techniques, I assist candidates to achieve their full potential and improve grades accordingly. To date all of my pupils have passed the exam I was assisting them with, although this cannot be guaranteed for every pupil of course. Many of my tutees achieve the higher 7-9 grades. For home visits outside of Harrogate town, 40p/mile each way travel charge applies. I'm semi-retired and have lived in Harrogate for over 15 years. Recent DBS check available. |
Teaching Experience: More than 8 years of tutoring experience, previous teaching in school placement, summer school and church Sunday school settings. Post Graduate Certificate in Science Education (PGCE), the national school teachers qualification, from York University. Testimonial: "John is an extremely calm, encouraging and thorough tutor and I have no hesitation in recommending his services. Our daughter's anticipated grade was increased by the school after his tutorials began. She sat her Maths GCSE in a much better frame of mind, and achieved her potential thanks to the sessions with John. " Laura. |
Tutoring Approach: I focus on teaching and improving: Revision, Study and Exam Techniques and Skills, enhancing the pupil's recall and understanding of core concepts in Maths and Physics. I also teach pupils how to consider and tailor their responses to the examiner's requirements and expectations. Enhancing motivation and interest in the subject by: -relating new concepts to children's existing knowledge, interests and experiences; -thorough revision of each topic; -covering many practice examples; -gradually introducing exam type questions; -analysing the student's answers to exam questions together; -explaining / inviting candidates to consider what the examiner is looking for. With adequate practice on past papers, and by developing the student's motivation, desire and reasons to succeed, every candidate can be enabled to achieve their true potential in the exam. My approach builds self-confidence in the student's own abilities. These have all been proven to improve grades and self-confidence in exam results. |

| Personal Description: I am a Mum of three grown up children, 2 dogs and a cat. I live in Shanklin but have travelled and worked in many countries. I enjoy teaching and meeting new people. I love walking in the surrounding countryside and along the beaches. I enjoy reading and cinema and theatre. I find baking a relaxing hobby and am interested in learning about mythology and historic sites, especially castles and manor houses. |
Teaching Experience: I taught for many years for the Isle of Wight College International Department. I taught EFL groups from beginner to proficiency levels. I have been a volunteer for the Syrian resettlement program giving weekly English classes. For the past 5 years I have been working as a self employed tutor for LAC and home-schooled children who are out of school for some reason. Many of these children have autism and/or ADHD. |
Tutoring Approach: I thoroughly enjoy working with children who are struggling in the school system and trying to make a difference to their confidence about their abilities. Many have very low self esteem and I believe working on this first is key to improving their engagement with academic work. I feel I am able to create a good rapport with students and always take the lead from them as to how much to expect in a lesson. |

| Personal Description: Hi! I'm Halima, a passionate and approachable tutor based in Leeds, currently offering online one-to-one tutoring for students from Year 6 (SATs) up to A-Level. I've just completed my A-Levels and I'm predicted 3 A*s in Maths, Physics and Economics. I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE Maths (which I completed early in Year 10) and have always loved helping others understand difficult topics. I know exactly what it's like to be a student in this system - from the pressure of exams to the feeling of not knowing where to start. That's why I'm so focused on creating a space where students feel comfortable, encouraged and genuinely supported in their learning. Whether it's building strong foundations or refining exam technique, I tailor every session to what each student needs. |
Teaching Experience: My tutoring journey began by supporting younger students in my school with revision techniques, difficult subjects and essay planning. Since then, I've gone on to create detailed revision resources, model past paper solutions and even structured predicted paper walkthroughs for subjects like Maths and Physics. I also sat a Cambridge interview and received offers from Durham, Leeds and Manchester, so I'm familiar with high-level academic preparation and can support students with personal statements or university prep where needed. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that every student is capable of doing well - they just need the right guidance, clear explanations and someone who really listens to how they learn best. My lessons are interactive, patient and paced around the individual. I use a mix of worked examples, questions, real-life application and active recall to help students understand not just the what, but the why. Because I've just been through the exact same curriculum, I can explain tricky ideas in a way that actually makes sense. I also love showing students how small wins and solid strategies can add up to big results over time. My goal is to not only improve grades, but also boost self-belief and motivation. |
Qualifications:
| Grade 9 in GCSE Maths (completed in Year 10) |
| Predicted 3 A*s in A-Level Maths, Physics & Economics |
| Interviewed by Cambridge; offers from Durham, Leeds & Manchester |
| Experience creating model answers and A-Level revision resources |
