Personal Description:
I am married with two older sons (30 & 25) and two cats. My hobbies are travelling, umpiring hockey, fishing and hill-walking. I have a positive attitude towards life, a good sense of humour and I'd like to think I'm easy to get on with.

EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT FEES
Please also note that once you have paid the website fee to access my contact details UK Tutors require me to pass on part of the first tutoring payment (£30) to them. For this reason in the very first tutoring session the charge will be £75 for the first hour and then the 'normal' £45 per hour after that.

I normally book out sessions in 1 hour or 1.5 hours although 2 hours is possible and sometimes (A level) better.

(School holidays by negotiation but normally mornings 9am - 12pm).

My wife also tutor GCSE maths and can be booked via my profile if a female tutor is preferred. She may be available for daytime sessions prior to 4:30pm.

Teaching Experience:

I am a very experienced teacher; I started teaching A level physics in 1983. As well as a class teacher, I have been Head of Physics (6 years), Head of Science (6 years), Assistant Head (2 years), Deputy Head (4 years) and Headteacher (7 years) all in medium to large high schools. Recently I have stepped back into 'semi-retirement' and returned to full time teaching (mainly physics) which I love. I am NOT a Welsh speaker although I understand a lot of the written Cymraeg and have taught and tutored many Welsh speaking students.

I am a very experienced tutor and I pride myself on doing a good job.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that two completely different types of tutoring are required, depending on the student's needs.

Firstly students who genuinely want to improve their understanding but are struggling. Here I like to go right back to basics, leading them forward at their own pace until I find where their understanding gets hazy. I use plenty of practical examples to help improve understanding followed by a more detailed look at exam board requirements.

Secondly, I have been around long enough to know there is a game to be played when it comes to passing exams! In these cases I like to carefully go through exam questions and exam board mark schemes to help students to see what is required in order to access the marks they need.

All tutoring jobs are different and a combination of these two approaches is often needed. For this reason I do a detailed assessment in the first session to find out what outcome the student is looking for.

Personal Description:
I am a Modern Foreign Languages teacher and am incredibly diligent, organised and devoted to promoting a love of language learning as well as a desire to ensure GCSE students achieve their very best in exams.
As a teacher and AQA examiner, I have access to past papers as well as having built up a wide range of teaching resources with which to teach. I am associated with a school wherein Edexcel and AQA are the examining body for Modern Foreign Languages although this does not hinder me as a prospective tutor for those studying under WJEC or alternative examining bodies. I have also tutored students sitting the I-GCSE with outstanding success rate. I believe my skillset, experience in teaching it and association with the examination board makes me a sound investment for any student wishing for the extra support as they approach the final months of their GCSE.
As an avid believer that when on holiday, one should speak in the "language of the locals", I am passionate about providing holiday conversational skills to adults.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Modern Foreign Languages since 2012 to GCSE and have been head of department in that time. Within my teaching practice, I have had experience of teaching across all levels and abilities from the 11-18 age range in secondary school.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring sessions are individually tailored based on the need of the tutee. For GCSE students, sessions usually focus on the key skills of language learning which are listening, reading, speaking and writing, whereas for adult learners, more emphasis is placed on the spoken language and listening comprehension.
My sessions aim to engage, interact and interest the learner as much as possible. Above all, I feel it important to instil confidence in the learner.
