Personal Description:
I am a Cambridge graduate currently teaching at a secondary school in Birmingham. I offer private tuition in English and Latin as well as Oxbridge application advice.

I specialise in coaching students through GCSE/A Level. However, I am happy to help all students from 11+ and even adult learners.

I graduated with a degree in English from the University of Cambridge (Girton College) in 2008 and in 2010 completed a Masters in Medieval Literature and History at the University of York. In 2019 I completed my PGCE at the University of Warwick and have since taught in a local secondary school.

Teaching Experience:

After ten years based in London working in journalism, in 2018 I moved back to the West Midlands to train as a teacher. I am now employed as a teacher of English at a highly-regarded secondary school in south Birmingham.

I have several years of experience in private tuition and and have tutored students preparing for GCSEs and A Levels in Latin, English (both language and literature), and Politics & Government. I've had great success in helping students of a range of abilities improve subject confidence and achieve exceptional results (including many A*s and Grade 9s).

Tutoring Approach:

Latin:

Puzzled by perfect participles?
Confused by conjugations?
...and what on earth is a gerundive?

Let's face it, studying Latin can be difficult, but it is the challenge which makes it such a rewarding subject.

My approach to teaching Latin is to develop translation skills whilst reinforcing the key building blocks of grammar. I endeavour to work at the student's own pace and tailor my sessions to complement school work.

English:

As a qualified teacher of English, I understand how to get the best out of students. I have an intimate knowledge of most GCSE and A Level set texts and can advise students on revision strategies and exam technique.

I am comfortable working at different paces and levels to support the individual needs of a student.

It is difficult to offer a single "approach to tutoring" as I believe the right teaching method depends entirely on the interests, level, and personality of the individual student.

Interviews:

I am also available to tutor students preparing for university entrance interviews (in particular Oxbridge). Having experienced the process first-hand, I feel I am well positioned to offer meaningful advice on how a candidate can impress during the application and interview process. I am willing to conduct mock interviews.

Qualifications:

Personal Description:
Hello, I am half South American half British and I have been teaching Spanish and French in secondary and primary schools for over 25 years. I currently teach part-time in a secondary school and love my job. I have recently decided to start tutoring because I now have more spare time as I am not in school every single day and my children are now older. I am also an examiner for one of the main GCSE examination boards. I was recently promoted to team leader so I manage a team of examiners and ensure that they are marking accurately. I therefore have an excellent knowledge of the Spanish and French exams. I am very experienced also teaching primary school children.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching in 1994 and have taught in a variety of schools including schools in London, Grammar schools and Comprehensives. I have taught Spanish up to A level and French to GCSE. Since I had children, I have taught in a local school for 20 years and am currently still there. I completed my degree at the University of London (Queen Mary and Westfield College) and my PGCE teaching qualification at the London Institute of Education. I have a lot of experience of teaching via Zoom etc. as I did a lot of this during the first lockdown when schools were closed and we were teaching remotely.

Tutoring Approach:

With the new GCSE and therefore years 7-9 leading up to it too, it is extremely important to have a very sound grasp of grammar so my lessons will normally start there to build up the student's confidence. I will help them to find ways of learning and remembering vocabulary, which is also important for the listening and reading exams. Students are often worried about speaking Spanish and I will boost their confidence with that. Many students do not realise how good they actually are and all they need is a little more belief in themselves to start to enjoy the language. I started working as an examiner for one of the main exam boards as I wanted to be able to give my students the best knowledge possible during my teaching, to help them in their Language studies. I am able to offer Zoom lessons and have had considerable experience of this during the first lockdown. I am experienced teaching in primary schools and offer a very different approach to this as younger students need constant stimulation and short sharp activities in order to maintain their interest and concentration.

Qualifications:
BA (Hons) is Spanish and French

Personal Description:
I have spent many years teaching Sociology to 16-19 yrs in different types of schools: State 6th form, FE college & Private 6th Form college. I enjoy teaching this age range and know Sociology is often appealing to this age group. My experience whether as a 6th Form teacher, Head of a Department, or examiner at A-Level has given me many insights into how students can succeed in this subject. I can cover areas from around St Albans, Watford, Radlett, Barnet & North West London.

Teaching Experience:

I have had many years teaching Sociology to 16-19 yrs in different types of schools: State 6th form, FE college & Private 6th form college. I am aware of the different challenges students meet both in their understanding of this subject and what skills they need to achieve for higher grades. My many years of examining at A-Level Sociology have given me a grasp of the exam techniques needed to achieve good grades.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring can be flexible as in some cases the student may need extra help in understanding some of the more difficult areas of YR 13 such as Sociological Theory or Crime and Deviance or Sociology of Media. Other students may prefer to focus on essay writing and how to evolve the skills which will improve their grades. A Tutor is best placed to be flexible and adaptable to the student's 'individual needs'.

Qualifications:
M Sc ( Sociology esp. Theory & Methodology)
MA Education
B.Ed ( specialisation in Socoiology of Ed)

Personal Description:
I am an experienced Physics teacher which is also my degree subject. Although familiar with OCR I am doing AQA at the moment. I am very exam focussed and adept at converting B's into A/A*s but can help students of all abilities. My biggest strength is making Physics an enjoyable and fun experience.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at a variety of schools. In some discipline was an issue and I have developed successful strategies for dealing with pupils and achieving good outcomes. I have also taught very able students which I have encountered in International schools and elsewhere (I have been involved in the development of gifted and talented pupils in science) and found this a very exciting experience.
At my last school I had significant input into the choice of the new GCSE. I was also KS5 co-coordinator and put a lot of effort into writing schemes of works for both AS and A2 units. I have also prepared material for other colleagues who are not confident at teaching Physics. I believe that Physics can be taught in an exciting manner.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is first of all to make sure we are communicating well. Is it the pupil who wants the extra help or has it been foisted on them by their parents or school? Then we can talk about what grade they are looking for. I would then make an evaluation made on a mini assessment that would tell me how realistic this would be. I would be honest and only then would we decide whether to proceed.
The sessions would have to be engaging for the pupil. I would make this happen by varying my approach and keeping up the pace. There would be significant progress every session.
