I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. For relaxation I listen to jazz and blues.

Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring students since March 2008 and am able to offer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, and general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level. I have taught GCE A-level Maths, Further Maths and Physics with a number of students who have obtained places at Oxbridge/ Russell Group Universities to study Engineering, Maths, Medicine and Economics. A number of my tutees have been following courses in IGCSE Maths or Science or the IB in Maths or Physics. I have also taught students with Statements of Special Educational Need who have succeeded in obtaining qualifications in Functional Skills in Maths, English and Science. I am familiar with the 11+ exam requirements of Bromley, Bexley, and Kent education authorities and have assisted a number of pupils with their preparation for the exam. At postgraduate level I can advise on research methods and statistics.

I am a chartered psychologist and can carry out educational and psychological assessments of both children and adults who are experiencing learning or language difficulties (however, I do not undertake remedial teaching).

I consider it important to assess the student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. I aim to provide well-structured and clearly presented instruction, which if the pupil is able and well-motivated will generally lead to progress. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then we may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment.

If required, I can provide references from past and present clients. I also offer a free first lesson so that the student has the opportunity to experience my style/approach before committing themselves to further lessons.

I have been tutoring students across London in all aspects of Computing since 2015. Having a PhD and a 1st Class Degree in Computer Science from Sheffield University, I have a great deal of experience in everything from general programming to academic research. I worked for a decade as an academic at both Sheffield and Surrey Universities. I have helped many students through their studies at GCSE and A-level, teaching AQA, OCR and CIE syllabuses. I am also happy to teach adult learners who are looking to expand their skillset.

For A-level and GCSE students it is worth beginning tuition as soon as possible, not just in the weeks running up to exams (although this can still help). This is particularly important for Computer Science because students should be learning a programming language in parallel with their studies. Some exam boards require a programming project as coursework, and it is important that this is completed as soon as possible to leave room for exam preparation.

I am happy to help degree students with theory and learning programming, but enquiries asking for help with an assignment for hand in next week are unlikely to be followed up.

Tutoring Approach:
Every new batch of tuition starts with getting to know more about the students. It is at the same time important to give the students enough space to familiarise themselves with me. A discussion will then follow to scope down what will be covered in the syllabus. A work plan is also devised with the aim to complete the syllabus well before the examinations, so as to have adequate time for revision. The following steps outline the process of each tuition session:
1. Initiate the subject or topic based on discussion of a real life example / scenario
2. Introduce the theoretical part of the subject or topic
3. Explain how the theory links to the real life example / scenario
4. Work out and explain some examples
5. Immediate evaluation of student's understanding through questions and answers
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until satisfactory response of the student (steps 1, 2 and 3 may also be repeated if required)
7. Give homework and a brief discussion on what will be covered in the next tuition session

Note: Each tuition session starts with the correction of the previous session's homework and explanation of any problem areas, including a summing up of what was covered in the previous tuition session.

I have been teaching in Scotland for approximately 17 years now. I have been involved in a number of SQA and National Projects including tasks such as writing, marking and developing the course.

Teaching Experience:
In my current role, I have full responsibility of delivering the new qualifications from S1 BGE through to Advanced Higher Computing Science. I have made the changes to our course and continue to develop these and the changes have been seamless in ensuring a smooth transition into the National Qualifications. I have enhanced my knowledge at National 4 and 5 by not only delivering these courses from the outset but also attending understanding standards events, marking the assignments and also the exam from the 2017/2018 academic year to present. I am also now an item writer for the National 5 course. I have been delivering the higher computing science course explicitly for the last two academic years and the advanced higher computing science course for this year whilst implementing the changes at all of the appropriate levels. I am also an external verifier for SQA and I am leading the rollout of digital learning within my school. In previous posts, I have led the subject forward towards a full implementation of the Curriculum for Excellence Qualifications. I have provided clarification, support and direction whilst providing opportunities for other colleaues to develop and progress their own professional skills and abilities. My lessons are designed specifically for KS2 learners (ages 7-11), and this may be useful for some older children catching up on coding and computing. The lessons will cover concepts in the DfE National curriculum for England, and usually we will go beyond the curriculum very swiftly.

I will start by loosely adhering to the Raspberry Pi's scratch modules which cover algorithms, and building with code. However, I believe in child led learning. If your child is less interested in making games or programming animations, and is more interested in technology and robots, we will follow the BBC's micro:bit projects. 🎓 These can be followed by a gentle introduction to Python when they are ready (a widely used text based programming language).

Beyond the meat of the coding, there are also other skills we will cover like digital safety, and how to use search tools effectively.

I'm patient, friendly, and great at explaining complex ideas in simple steps using multiple methods to get the concepts across.
