I have graduated from Bristol University with a 1st in Biochemistry and have started a PhD in Neuroscience. Through my PhD, degree and A-levels (maths, physics, chemistry, english literature and general studies - all grade A) I have had teaching in a variety of subjects, and a large amount of experience in explaining concepts and learning facts - crucial to be able to understand and teach a subject.

In my spare time I enjoy playing squash, going mountain biking and to the gym, and trying to explain to my girlfriend exactly what it is that I do in my research!

Teaching Experience:
Demonstrating in practical classes to first year undergraduates in physiology and pharmacology at Bristol University.

Spent several years volunteering part-time for 'Nightline', a local Bristol organisation aimed at providing a ear for troubled students to talk through their problems and concerns with at any time of night. A year of my time there was spent as the Coordinator, and another year as one of two Training Officers.

Involved in mentoring projects throughout my A-levels - helping and encouraging GCSE students in a non-academic capacity.

Most recently I have been tutoring A-level maths and chemistry to a number of students about to take their exams.

Tutoring Approach:
Being able to explain concepts is a sign that they have been learnt properly (rather than just 'revised'). Clear and patient explanation on the part of the tutor is key to ensuring that the tutee is able to learn at a pace they are comfortable with.

Feeling inspired by a subject also helps a student to remember, and vital to this is to put subjects in proper context. My diverse education and current research has given my an understanding of how the concepts taught in a classroom relate to real-world situations and problems.

My approach to tutoring is fairly relaxed but very structured in terms of preparation and planning to provide for individual student needs. I administer an initial placement test and needs analysis and then design an ongoing 'course' of lessons linked to the length of study time required and the student's personal objectives - e.g - to pass ALevel English with good grades to enter University.

I also offer courses /lessons simply for interest/enjoyment/personal development.
I am flexible, adaptable to needs, and willing to travel to individual homes or invite you here to my own in which I have a purpose built teaching space, with lots of resources.

I believe in expression of voice and opinion, especially when studying literature, and encouraging students to reach their full potential. Above all, I hope to instil my own passion for language into the teaching I provide, leaving students fulfilled and genuinely having learnt something, whatever the outcome or objectives they wish to achieve.
