I am a patient, friendly and enthusiastic tutor. I come from an academic background, with a Ph.D in Molecular Biology followed by 3 years Post-doctoral Research at University of Edinburgh and therefore have a thorough and extensive knowledge of the subjects I tutor in. I have been a full-time Private Tutor for 20 years, mainly in Biology at A-level, but also GCSE Biology and Chemistry. For GCSE/iGCSE, most of my teaching has been for the AQA, Edexcel and CIE boards (Biology and Chemistry). Tutoring Approach:
My approach varies depending on the student as all have different needs and learning styles. For GCSE/A-level tuition, I predominantly concentrate on exam practice, with in-depth topic study for any problematic subjects. I also use multimedia aids to help students visualise biological/chemical processes where appropriate and I have created PowerPoint files covering all A-level and GCSE Biology and Chemistry topics, tailored to each syllabus/exam board. My academic research background has given me a very sound understanding of how to interpret and analyse scientific data, a major theme in A-level Biology exams and one that many students struggle with. I will happily assist students in building their confidence with respect to this trickier element of the course.

Since March 2020 , all of my tuition has been online (via Zoom) and I have adapted my lessons to work equally well, using interactive tools and easy sharing of resources. I always send resources (questions, reading material etc) in advance of the session and will provide copies of my teaching material after the session too.

Born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1981, Andreas started his classical guitar studies at the age of seven, under the tuition of Anastasios Amiridis. He completed his guitar diploma at the Municipal Conservatory of Thessaloniki in 2002 receiving the highest mark.

Andreas then continued with his education obtaining a Bachelor and Master's degree in music from Ionian University of Greece. He has also a Postgraduate title from Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria.

There have been many famous and distinguished guitarists that Andreas studied with or attended master classes such as Leo Brouwer, Eliot Fisk, Ricardo Gallen, Jorge Morel, Ε. Αsimakopoulos, Marco Tamayo, Costas Cotsiolis, David Russell.

Andreas has accomplished many goals within his musical career. He has won several National and International contest prizes. He was invited as a soloist in many festivals like the 4th Congress Association of Southeastern Guitarists, Naxos Guitar Festival, Evangelos Asimakopoulos guitar festival in Patras etc.

He has performed as a soloist guitar player as well as accompanied by Chamber music or by Orchestras. One of Andreas career highlights came in October 2008 when he played in Athens Concert Hall with the Athens Camerata-string Orchestra in front of HRH Princess Irene of Spain.

Since 2008 he has begun making his own transcriptions of works by composers of the wider musical repertoire on the guitar. As of July 1st 2010 the release of his first personal CD called "Classical Styles for Today" is ready for purchase.

A true renaissance man, Alex makes: mini epic films, video installations, games, photographs, sculpture, blogs and books. Using readily available materials and software the work often has a feeling of improvisation, an initial throwaway idea made visible.

Throughout his practice there is a sense of an acceptance of failure or disappointment as important parts of the human condition. He makes light with big issues and is, in turn, haunting and funny. His humorous sculpture typically conveys a sense of the accidental, eternally on the brink of failure or collapse. Recent DIY apocalypses, created from expanding builders' foam, seem to have an unruly, malevolent life of their own and explore the processes of invasion and infection. While his films and writing play with ideas of chance, quotidian struggles, the loss of control and responsibility.

I also have eighteen years of experience working in clinical biochemistry laboratories within the NHS. This encompassed various roles and duties, including producing analytical results to help diagnose and manage patients, troubleshooting and problem-solving, discussion of patients with clinical staff, management and supervision of laboratory staff and research and development work. More recently, I also have considerable research experience, both in pure research and from working within the pharmaceutical industry.

- I supervised and tutored my supervisor`s final year honours student. She graduated with a first.

- Acting in a consultative, mentoring and teaching capacity for my guest American supervisor`s research group, especially when he was not around.
- I have presented science and research work in various forums, from informal seminars to international conferences, including a prize-winning lecture I delivered in the USA.

I appreciate that everybody has different expectations and needs, and these always have to be taken into consideration when deciding how best to tutor somebody. Initially, I would seek to find out your strengths and weaknesses and use those to tailor my tutoring to your requirements.

One's ability to learn and understand a subject are inextricably linked to one's interest in it. The classroom nature of school or college education can understandably make it unsuited to students who are struggling with a subject. Similarly, it can lead to the potential of strong students of a subject not being fully recognised and nurtured. In both cases, this can lead to dejection, frustration and disinterest. Since then I've been working full time and have just finished a masters level apprenticeship alongside my work. I've found in the past that the best approach to tutoring is to be very positive and flexible. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.
