I like to understand my clients' needs, their particular strengths and areas for improvement. I teach the topic in the best possible way to match their learning needs. The key is for them to understand the topic by linking to something which they previously now. This creates a connection in their brain to help them remember and understand the concept long-term. It is vital for students to truly get excited about the subject so by using real life examples, they can remember concepts more easily. Afterwards, I managed to explain various application questions using the struggling contents and interacting with my tutee (ie. asking what the next step would be) as I went through the questions to expand his understanding. I shared my method of working out the questions logically and giving clear guidance helped him greatly, hence, I was able to see improvement in his speed of understanding and solving of the questionnaires, showing a transition in his grades in Mathematics.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my profile. My name is Mairead (pronounced ma-raid, an Irish name meaning Margaret). I am a 26 year old living in Feltham, I work full time as a Disability Advisor and Autism Specialist Mentor supporting higher education students to access reasonable adjustments, provide pastoral support and advice. I also co-run workshops and events for the university I work for. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, spending time with my family, going to the gym, long walks and nature trails, swimming and arts and crafts. I am also a big fan of the cinema and watching the new films out. I graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2018, with a first class honours degree in Criminology and Sociology BSc. Please be aware for KS1 and younger tutoring my rates are £15 per session rather than per hour, to reflect that younger children may benefit from shorter sessions, but that their sessions will still need planning and admin work.

Hi, my name is Imi, and I am in my 5th year of Dentistry at the University of Bristol. I am looking to tutor in Chemistry and Biology up to A-level and below, having taken Chemistry, Biology and Economics at A-level myself and achieved 3 A*'s. In addition to this, I also completed my Extended Project Qualification based on dentistry, drawing on my scientific background, in which I achieved an A*. At GCSE level, I achieved all 9's and took all 3 sciences, Maths, English, German, Geography, Religious Studies and Latin.

Teaching Experience:
At secondary school, I was a Peer Mentor for 2 GCSE students in Biology and Chemistry. We met weekly in the build up to their exams and went over topics they struggled with and I brought some of my own materials along to test their knowledge after we had discussed their mistakes. I learnt a great deal about different teaching styles from both students and how to be adaptable when the topic of discussion changed quickly. Additionally, for 2 years every week, I volunteered to teach disabled children how to swim at my local pool. This was a wonderful experience and developed my communication skills immensely as I had to cater to a wide range of disabilities. Therefore, I believe I am very patient and flexible with my approach to teaching.

I feel passionately about making all of my tutoring sessions interactive, enjoyable and targeted to the individual student. I endeavour to make all of my tutees feel relaxed with me from the start, so that there's a comfortable environment, where they know that all their questions are valid and can be asked without judgement. I believe it is important to frequently recap content in order to identify areas of weakness in my tutee's knowledge and I plan to do this with recap quizzes/discussions at the beginning of each session. Personally, I also greatly benefitted from making up mnemonics and sketching diagrams when covering challenging content and so I would aim to do this with my tutee too. However, I would see what mix of methods work best for each student.

I teach sailing during the summers to children and adults alike, so I can quickly adjust topics and lessons to be suitable for different age ranges. Whilst I haven't held an official teaching role, I've spent the last couple of years helping to mentor those around me when they needed it. I find it incredibly rewarding to break down harder concepts that people often find 'scary' into more manageable steps. For example, I previously tutored a friend in GCSE Maths who was consistently stuck on a grade 4-5. By focusing on consistently appearing topics that could also appear in larger mark questions, like SURDs and completing the square, I helped her build the confidence to tackle the higher-tier papers. I'm proud to say she went on to achieve a Grade 7 in her final exams. Additionally, I regularly help my younger sister with her primary school work, helping me to develop the patience and adaptability skills needed to explain the same concept in multiple different ways and examples until it clicks and sticks to the student being taught.

Growing up, I've always been a visual learner; I understand that textbooks aren't always enough. I've used this to my advantage to turn it into my greatest teaching strength: I use my iPad to make every session interactive.I do this by breaking down complex topics with live diagrams, graphs, and real-life examples to break down exactly how a concept works. I also use the 'I do, we do, you do' approach to help build a genuine understanding of the topic. First, I model exactly how to tackle a high-mark exam question. Next, we collaborate on a second question and work through the steps required together. Finally, I let the student take the lead on their own, allowing them to apply their new skills with their own knowledge.
