Alan began exhibiting his photography back in 1995 and won various awards through the Australian photography industry bodies: the A.I.P.P. and A.C.M.P. In 1997, he was awarded the 'Nikon/Panorama Showcase Photographer of the Year' for his portfolio of ten images. The judges included the late David Moore. In 2006 he received two nominations in the international Black and White Spider Awards for fine art and sport. In 2008 Alan took part in a weeks long photo workshop in London, taught by two Magnum Agency photographers. He was one of 14 chosen from 130 photographers that supplied portfolios.

I taught Russian and French in secondary schools in UK (1995-1999), Russian and Serbo-Croat for the Ministry of Defence (1980-2006), Basic Skills English at Bedford Prison (2007-2008) and English as a foreign language in Kishinev (Moldova,1993), Odessa (2008) and Moscow (2008-2010). Between 2006 and 2011 I taught Russian at the University of Essex and University of East Anglia summer schools and am currently teaching English as a foreign language on skype and Russian.

I have been tutoring privately for 14 years. I have worked with a wide range of ages and academic abilities from different schools such as private, public, grammar, boarding, faith schools and academies.
I worked as an Literacy Assessment Assistant where i taught Year 8, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13.

I'm currently working in finance for Molson Coors, having previously worked in external audit for PwC for 4 years where I obtained my ACA qualification.
Prior to this I was a student studying Economics at the University of Birmingham, where I achieved a first level BSc. I am interested in sharing some of the things I have learnt over my years in education with others, which is why I'm keen to tutor. I have previously mentored students throughout secondary school and really enjoyed it. Apart from university my other interests include; playing netball and renovating my house.
Teaching Experience:
I have previously mentored students through their GCSEs and Alevels at secondary school and really enjoyed it. I am the coach of a netball team so this also gives me skills which help to make me a better tutor such as patience, organisation and effective communication skills.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe tutoring is the responsibility of both the tutor and the tutee. I would like to plan sessions which are stimulating, engaging and involve ideas bouncing between the two of us, whether that is through debate, discussions or question and answer sessions. I am also open minded so would be prepared to experiment a lot with teaching style. I currently teach in a secondary school in Oxford and have been there for the past three years. Prior to this for three and a half years I tutored students, up to and including, GCSE level - foundation and higher tier - in another secondary school.
Being a teacher gives me an insight and experience of what students go through every day - attempting problems and convincing themselves they cannot answer any of it. Dealing with different ages and abilities I understand that not one student is the same so I have a range of methods to answer specific questions; for example I have three separate ways to answer a multiplication question.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm a masters student at the University of Nottingham, with lots of experience tutoring both online and in person. I'm passionate about maths and physics and would love to help you out with your GCSE and A level revision.
I have experience with international exam boards such IEdexcel and CIE so would love to help you out with your IGCSEs and A levels over the summer .
I would also love to help out if you student who needs to catch up due to covid related missed learning or if you'd like to get get a head start on your A level content this summer!
Teaching Experience:
- Over 850 hour of online tutoring experience (mostly private but also in schools).
- 1 year of in person tutoring experience in a school.
- A summer job writing content (i.e., notes and questions) for an A level physics course.
I am familiar with all of the major UK exam boards (Edexcel, OCR and AQA) in all of the subjects that I teach as well as many international boards.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that the most efficient and rewarding way to learn is through understanding. Gaining deep understanding of the underlying physical and/or mathematical concepts, is key to tackling higher level questions. Understanding just one concept can make pages of your textbooks seem trivial. I will therefore try and identify and fix gaps in your knowledge and understanding. By doing this I aim to minimize that amount which you're required to memorize before an exam. I think that learning a subject by rigorous memorization is mind numbingly dull and is the best way to kill a passion.
Many people will not fulfil their potential due to fear of asking questions which they perceive as 'stupid'. I encourage you to ask me ridiculous and stupid questions.
A level exam boards have a tendency to ask very similar questions and even repeat exam questions from year to year. We will therefore spend lots of time looking at exam questions and the way in which they're marked to maximise the marks you can pick up.
I like to provide detailed feedback for my students by sending you a copy of your specification with the content we have covered highlighted red amber green after each session.
