About Claire:
I am a 27 year old college lecturer with experience in sixth form colleges, large secondary schools and private educational institutions. I have also had experience in a scientific research environment. As well as loving my subject I like to travel and broaden my horizons.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working in one of the top ten colleges in the country teaching chemistry at AS, A2 and International Baccalaureate level. I also teach applied science AS level and GCSE science. Previously I have worked in a large secondary school and sixth form teaching science from KS3 to GCSE and chemistry at A Level. I have experience of both 'old' and 'new' GCSE and A Level specifications. I have also been tutoring privately for six years in a range of subjects including mathematics, science, chemistry A Level, biology A Level and even first year medicine (I have a background in biochemistry as well as chemistry).

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient tutor who wholeheartedly believes in a student-centred approach. During my 'lessons' (whether they be one to one or a whole class) students are encouraged to think for themselves and to produce their own explanations, under my guidance. The most effective way for a student to recall difficult concepts is if they are given the opportunity to discuss them, without fear of being 'wrong'. I also use my experience to guide students in ways they can remember large amounts of information and in preparation for examinations.

About Erman:
The subjects I would like to teach are Turkish, Politics, Philosophy and Sociology on which I have been studying for nearly 6 years in academic level. My BA degree is in Political Science and my MSc is in Political Theory (from LSE). At the moment I am a continuing PhD student in Humanities department at the University of London. I have voluntarily, academically and professionally taught in several subjects and I am preparing to be an academic lecturer mainly in Nietzsche, Kant, Aesthetics, Ethics and Political Philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor in Alphatutors since last year. But before that I was giving private courses in Politics, Philosophy and Turkish.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is both traditional and alternative since while I create outlines for each class and assign homework, I also apply non-conventional methods like discussing the logic of every rule in order to teach the student the substance or the core of the subject. This enables them to approach the subject and gives them power and motivation to interpret the questions or problems using the knowledge they acquire from the tuition.

About Timothy:
I graduated in 2006 from York University with a degree in Maths and Philosophy for which I received a 2:1.

Teaching Experience:

This is my second year of tutoring and I am pleased to report that last year all my pupils achieved their target grades and were successful in increasing their grades above their 'Mock' results.

For example a student I needed a GCSE 'C' in order to get onto a certain course at College, but his Mock result was a 'D'. After tuition, he achieved the C and has gone on to take Maths at 'A' level. (Written reference available on request)

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is friendly and flexible. I sympathise with the feeling that many people have experienced of being overwhelmed by a piece of Maths or the wording of a question however I also believe that Maths is never as hard as it seems and that all problems can be solved and understood with help, resulting in a student who is confident and able to achieve success in his or her exam.

I am patient and good at explaining and my students have often remarked that a piece of maths that would previously have left them baffled seems easy after we have looked at it.

About David:
Hello, I am a very friendly and outgoing 23 year old man from Aberdeen. I am a recent law graduate and have a record of good academic achievement. I am friendly, patient and have an organised goal-orientated approach. In my spare time away from university I play 5-aside football and enjoy playing squash.

Teaching Experience:

I have assisted some family friends in Higher English and Higher Modern Studies. Furthermore I am accustomed to helping young people with their studies because I have a nephew who is of secondary school age. Although I may not have vast experience, I bring a determined and pragmatic approach to gaining the best results for my students whilst maintaining a sense of enjoyment.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to gain a friendly rapport with my pupils and then assess exactly what they need help with. This would involve looking over the objectives and deadlines of the course involved and formulating a plan with the student. I would then assess the students strengths/weaknesses and anxieties to determine where our initial focus would lie.

About David:
I have recently completed my MSc in Business Economics and Finance. I passed with merit. I received my Bachelors degree from Boston University School of Management in Finance with a 2.1 (equivalent). Prior to studying finance I studied Engineering and thus my strong maths skills. I also have a very strong command of the English language.

I am currently working for a large energy trading firm, managing capital projects.

Teaching Experience:

I was a peer tutor in university in Calculus, Economics, Business and I led a number of lectures in Business EconomicsI have volunteered as a tutor for a little over a year teaching 7-10 years olds how to read.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths:
One does not learn Maths; instead they understand it. This is the cornerstone of my approach. Once the maths 'click' in a students head, it is very hard for it to un-click. Thus, I provide an almost Socratic approach to maths, which stimulates the student to develop the answer on his/her own.

About Thomas:
A recent graduate in English Literature and Language, I am passionate about good communication and relevancy. I have intimate knowledge of the current education system as my wife is a secondary school teacher, while my own experience of education was mixed between state primary, private preparatory, online secondary and state sixth form college, before attending a prestigious London university.

I'm a warm and caring person who is willing to tailor his tutoring to each individual pupil with patience and a professional attitude.

I also offer guitar lessons to beginners, which may work alongside pupils studying music up to GCSE level.

Teaching Experience:

I spent four terms working in a private boarding school in West Sussex. This taught me a huge amount about how the teacher/pupil relationship works, and particularly what makes the pupil want to improve and what makes the pupil lazy and demotivated. I've also had a lot of experience working with my fellow undergraduates, many of whom clearly suffered from our education system's lack of formal teaching on grammar and the importance of understanding register in academic writing. This has meant that I've become able to tutor people of my own age, or even older, without patronising them.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in making education fun, but at the same time in achieving real results. For too long, the education system in our country has meant that pupils are encouraged to settle for second best in terms of how they understand specific subjects. In English this has meant an over-emphasis on comprehension of specific texts, without a wider knowledge of period, intertextuality and context. In History, it has meant increasing reliance on fact-based teaching, without a willingness to grapple with the real issues at stake - for example, in the rise of fascism, or the battle for Civil Rights in the USA.

I believe in educating people to think for themselves and to understand the why as well as the what.

About Sam:
I am 26 year old Cambridge graduate, currently studying for a engineering PhD at the University of Edinburgh. I love teaching, and can explain things clearly at the right level for the student. I'm very patient, and believe that careful tutoring outside of the pressure of the classroom can be an excellent way to learn.

Teaching Experience:

I'm currently teaching, marking and taking practical labs as part of my PhD, and have a variety of previous (informal) tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very careful approach to tutoring, based on matching the material to the level of the individual student. I have a natural ability to explain things clearly, and ensure the student understands the main concepts before introducing new things. I revise material regularly and throughout tutoring to build up and reinforce learning. I can provide some exercises and questions, although my aim is to help the student, rather than burden them with extra work.

About Lorna:
I am an enthusiastic and confident teacher. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others, and inspiring them to want to learn. I am able to support students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to work on these in order to reach their full potential.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked for four years as a class teacher (including one year training through the Graduate Teacher Programme), with most of my experience being in Key Stage 2. I have taught all subjects at primary level, although my subject specialisms are Music and Modern Foreign Languages.
I have also worked as a postgraduate teacher for undergraduate students, delivering courses on Italian literature, film and social studies.

Tutoring Approach:

With primary school children, I aim to make learning fun and to help children realise how much they can achieve. I provide tailored lessons to suit individual children's needs and can support children to prepare for KS2 SATs examinations.

With older students, I encourage students to identify areas in which they need support and work to develop skills according to individual needs. When teaching languages, I include aspects of reading, writing, speaking and listening in all lessons and can provide an extra focus on any of these areas as necessary.

About Daniella:
I am currently studying Dentistry at King's College London. I was educated at North London Collegiate School, where I took both my GCSE's and A-Levels.

I received A*s in 8 GCSE subjects with an A in History, and completed my maths GCSE 1 year early, continuing to do an Additional Freestanding Further Mathematics qualification during my final GCSE year, for which I achieved the highest grade of A.I decided to continue with Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths (only AS), and English for higher education, and achieved all A's in my AS-Levels, as well as all A's in my A2's, with 100% in several of the Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English modules, including some synoptic modules.

In year 12, I was Managing Director of a Young Enterprise company, which I found both enjoyable, but at the same time demanding of responsibility. In my spare time, I enjoy playing sport and writing for student journals or magazines.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored numerous students for the past 2 years, spanning a range of ages from 4 years old to 16 years old, some of whom have had learning difficulties or special needs. The qualifications for which I have tutored include SATs (year 6 and year 9), 11+ and 7+ entrance examinations, and GCSE's. I aim to deliver a level of teaching that ensures a success rate in which the student reaches their full potential, often resulting in the acceptance of the students into their desired school, or achieving a grade previously unreachable.

Tutoring Approach:

My policy when tutoring is the idea that if a student develops an enjoyment for whatever subject is being taught, they are more likely to put in the work and effort required for an improvement.Once they begin improving and understand more of what is being taught, their love of the subject should develop further. Hoping to instill an enjoyment of the subject is therefore my primary belief in a successful approach to their studies.

Although some work will be completed in lessons, I view a lesson as quality teaching time, and therefore lessons will never be conducted where I provide work, leave the student, and mark it eventually. This, in my view, wastes both the student's time, and their parent's money. My feeling of responsibility for my students ensures that during lesson time, I deliver the best that I possibly can, while bringing out the best in the student, so that every lesson target is achieved by the end.My exam results reflect that I can achieve full marks, and my aim for my students is no less than what I desire for myself. I hope to not only teach my students what they need to know, but also how to study and learn what they need to know, so that they can perform well in examinations.

I believe that homework is necessary to ensure that what is being taught in lessons can be used outside lessons also. However, homework is given taking into account the student's available free time, and is not meant to be a burden, more than a help.

The shorter age gap between my students and I means that I can still relate to the demands and requirements of school, while at the same time offer valuable advice having recently completed the schooling system. Overall, it is important that lessons should be both fun and educational, and although I may at times be strict in order to ensure that progress is being made, my students have definitely viewed me as more of a friend than a strict and distant teacher.

About Hestia:
I'm a professional tutor and artist living and working in London. I'm as passionate about education as I am about the arts and am fascinated by the relationship between the two. Pupils can expect to find me friendly, interesting and engaging at all times.

Teaching Experience:

Three years of private tutoring with prestigious London agency The Tutor's Group.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is child-centered. I will work with your child to establish a programme suited to their needs which they can feel really empowered by and involved in. It is my belief that tuition outside of a school context can be extremely valuable to young people whatever their interests or ability. The new perspective that tuition in an environment they are comfortable in can transform their relationship with learning in and out of the classroom.

With all students I try to build a rapport based on their own interests and outlook. I keep sessions informal, aiming to instill a genuine interest in the subject at hand, allowing students to develop a strong work ethic that really means something to them. I can keep things interesting with a wide variety of inspirational activities, ranging from Origami to Mind-Mapping, encouraging the student to become aware of his or her own learning process.

I teach all subjects from Primary level to Common Entrance level and Key Stage 3 (age 14)
At GCSE I teach Maths, English and Sciences plus Drama, Art and Design and History of Art
At A level I teach Art, Art History, English and Drama.

I can provide coaching for interview and exam technique, mentoring and for those students hoping to enter Higher Education in the Arts I can provide advice and assistance in assembling a portfolio.

About Nowbaveh:
I graduated from University last July with a 2.1 in English Literature. However, I intend to return to University in a few years time to complete a Masters in Spanish Renaissance literature. I am 29, and have had interesting life experiences which include travelling the Middle and Far East when I was young with my father, living in London when I finished secondary school, and spending time in China during University.

I love music and am currently taking piano lessons. Also I love reading, and have a current passion for graphic novels and Russian literature.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience involves preparing students for the 2008 Higher and Intermediate 2 exams. I found that this experience taught me that tutoring must be tailored to the needs of the pupil while regarding the end goal. I believe my students got the most from my tutoring because of my friendly approach and ability to make concepts easy to understand.

I have a fresh experience of University where I was assistant Chairperson in the English Literature society, and can use this experience of responsibility and authority, and transfer it to my tutees. I also upheld a part time job while at college studying for my highers, and so can understand the pressures of modern life. This has taught me time management, prioritising skills and working to deadlines - all these skills I am eager to pass on to my tutees.

The new Curriculum for Excellence, soon to be implemented in schools throughout Scotland are focussed on teaching pupils life skills as well as academic, and my credentials and beliefs fit with these aims.

Tutoring Approach:

I am free to tutor evenings and weekends. I am also willing to travel to wherever you need so you can remain in the comfort of your own home - being comfortable and happy are an excellent foundation for happy studying. I am friendly, easy going, and encouraging which are three factors I believe are vital for a happy tutor-student relationship.

I can use my experience at school, college and University to develop my own personal tutor style by drawing on good and bad aspects of all the tutors I have had.

I am new to tutoring and so full of excitement at being involved in a person's development and success, but also eager to share my knowledge and expertise.
