I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a first-class degree in Mathematics with honours, having previously achieved grade A in Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A level. Since graduating, I have worked full-time as a private maths tutor.

I've always enjoyed maths (even if I didn't always want to admit it!) and, even though I didn't expect it when I started, I have found that I very much enjoy working one-to-one with people to help them improve their maths skills. Tutoring Approach:
My approach to teaching centres around patience, clarity and adapting the lesson to the individual student. One of the main advantages of one-to-one tuition is that there is no need to move on simply because the rest of a class is ready to do so. If a student needs more time on a particular idea, we can spend that time; equally, if they have understood something quickly, we can move on to more challenging material.

Where possible, I like to work through topics in a carefully structured progression, beginning with the underlying ideas and building towards the more difficult and exam-style questions. The resources I have developed over the years are particularly helpful here, as I can choose questions of an appropriate level and gradually increase the difficulty as the student progresses. I don't feel there is much point in rushing through a topic for the sake of it, so I am always happy to take things as slowly as the student might want - going back over past topics/questions if that's what they feel would be most helpful.

I am also eager to push students if I feel they are capable of working at a higher level. Many students underestimate their own ability because the pace or style of their school lessons does not suit the way they learn, only to find that, once they begin one-to-one tuition, they are capable of much more than they had realised.

Finally, I strongly believe that the greatest progress usually comes when regular tuition is combined with some independent work between lessons - I am therefore happy to provide homework from my own resources.

Hi, my name is Tom. I'm a very experienced GCSE and A level maths tutor. Students and parents find me very effective. (Please see the testimonials on my profile page.) I teach through dialogue, the priority always being to allow the student to think aloud, and to choose which way to explore a problem.

I'm expert with online teaching software, including my own for teaching vectors.

Teaching Experience:
I've taught privately over many years, and had extensive contracts for one-to-one work at many schools in Letchworth and, most recently, a 6th form college in Brighton (Kings).

I'm expert at using graphical software to teach online.

I'm experienced in teaching maths at all levels of primary and secondary schooling (UK Key Stages 1 to 5).

Tutoring Approach:
Students often struggle with maths at school because of misconceptions that are particular to them, and difficult to rectify in a whole class setting, and which lead to the student losing confidence. One-to-one tuition can be an excellent way to address these misconceptions. and enable the student to re-connect with their enjoyment of the subject.

As a psychology graduate (before studying maths at university level), I have a fascination with how students themselves will approach a maths problem, and I'm good at allowing them to explore and develop their own ideas. I find they almost always have energy and enthusiasm for, say, a ratio or algebra problem, if they are allowed to explore it with appropriate visual imagery.

I am a Cambridge Mathematics graduate and experienced Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics tutor with ten years of private tutoring and teaching experience.

My academic background spans Mathematics, Physics and energy policy. I studied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, completed an MSc in High-Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and am completing a UCL PhD in energy policy. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and a published academic.

I achieved five A*s at A-level in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, including full marks across my Mathematics and Further Mathematics modules.

I specialise particularly in A-level and IB Mathematics, Further Mathematics and advanced problem-solving, although I also teach GCSE/IGCSE Mathematics, Physics, STEP, MAT, Digital SAT Mathematics, AP examinations, 11+ and other school and university entrance examinations.

Students I have supported have gone on to universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, King's College London, Durham, Princeton, Harvard and MIT.

I am calm and encouraging, but also highly organised and results-focused. I particularly enjoy seeing students develop the confidence and independence to tackle problems they previously thought were beyond them.

Teaching Experience:
I have ten years of tutoring and teaching experience across Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and entrance examinations.

My school-level experience includes GCSE/IGCSE, European Baccalaureate, A-level, IB, Pre-U, STEP, MAT, Digital SAT Mathematics, AP examinations, 11+ and selective-school entrance examinations.

I have repeatedly helped students improve by two or more grades. Previous examples include students moving from U to B, D to A and C to A*. I have also supported students through MAT and STEP before they went on to read Mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge.

Alongside private tutoring, I have taught Mathematics and Further Mathematics in high-school and sixth-form settings from Years 10-13. My responsibilities included working with the Head of Mathematics to structure the A-level curriculum, adapting lessons for students who were either falling behind or progressing beyond the expected level, and working across different examination boards.

I have extensive university teaching experience, including at UCL and New York University Abu Dhabi. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), recognising my teaching practice in higher education.

I have also tutored internationally, including extensive work with students in Berlin and Barcelona. This has given me experience across British, IB, European and US curricula.

At university level, my experience includes calculus, differential methods, mechanics, dynamics and relativity, vectors and matrices, vector calculus, complex methods, variational principles, quantum mechanics, classical dynamics, cosmology, statistical physics and general relativity.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach begins with diagnosis. When I start working with a student, I establish where they currently stand relative to their syllabus or admissions requirements and identify what is actually limiting their progress.

The same disappointing result can have very different causes: missing foundational knowledge, fragile algebra, difficulty recognising which method applies, inaccurate execution, poor examination timing or a lack of confidence with unfamiliar questions. I use recent work and carefully selected problems to distinguish between these before developing a longer-term plan.

I then build understanding before turning it into efficient technique. I want students to understand why a method works, when it applies and how it connects with ideas they already know.

Students do as much of the reasoning as possible themselves. I use questioning, staged prompts and progressively harder problems rather than simply demonstrating solutions for them to imitate. As the student's understanding improves, I deliberately reduce the amount of support I provide.

Mistakes are treated diagnostically. We identify whether an error came from understanding, recognising the appropriate method, algebraic execution, interpretation of the question or examination strategy. This allows us to address recurring problems rather than repeatedly correcting isolated answers.

For high-attaining students, Further Mathematics and admissions candidates, I place particular emphasis on unfamiliar problems, sustained mathematical arguments and learning how to recover when an initial approach fails.

As examinations approach, we combine this with detailed work on timing, question interpretation, method selection, clear working, checking and targeted past-paper practice.

My ultimate goal is not to make students dependent on tuition. It is to help them become increasingly confident and independent mathematicians who can diagnose their own difficulties and approach demanding work with greater control.
