Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

I'm a committed,professional and hard working qualified ICT teacher/Lecturer,who has been teaching for 20 years. I have taught across Key stages 3,4 and 5 at GCSE,BTEC Level 2 Digital IT,AS and A levels during my teaching career. My subject knowledge is outstanding, and i have a proven track record of success within my subject. I aim to ensure that all students can reach their full potential, by providing a kind,caring and enjoyable environment for my students.

Teaching Experience:
Taught for 9 years at a high school in Northumberland. I also design and create websites in my spare time. Been an IT trainer teaching apprentices at Level 3 and 4, Worked in FE colleges including spells at Tynemet College and Newcastle College. Currently I work in a secondary school in North Tyneside. I have 20 years experience of teaching all topics within Computer Science and ICT at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. My teaching experience covers secondary schools, further education colleges and working in the private sector with apprentices.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is that I aim to ensure that all students can reach their full potential, by providing a kind,caring and enjoyable, engaging environment for my students, so that they can improve their confidence and subject knowledge. I became a teacher because I love teaching.|

I sometimes wonder why it took me so long to find my ideal career as for many years I worked in industry and the public sector as a systems librarian and website manager.

However, I now consider my multidisciplinary career to be one of my great strengths as a teacher, as I bring a wide range of experience to the classroom which enhances my teaching and grounds it in the real world.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a teacher for ten years now - I have diversified and taught three related topics: Computer Science, Information Technology and Computer Games Design. In all subjects I attempt to relate the topic to case studies and my experience at work.

I taught for 8 years at a Sixth Form College in Walthamstow, London and for 1 year in a Sixth Form College in Palma, Mallorca, Spain.

For the last year I have taught as a supply and substitute teacher - my last Computer Science role was teaching GCSE Computer Science, for 3 months at Marlborough College, Wiltshire.

I am also teaching online tuition and have done so in 2026-2027 and 2025 to present. I teach a mixture of GCSE and A Level Computer Science.

Tutoring Approach:
In my first lesson I will find the gaps in a student's knowledge. Often a student has a clear idea of what they need help on, but I also find that diagnostic assessment will help find other knowledge gaps the student is not aware of.

I will then address these knowledge gaps with specific tailor-made lessons. At the end of the lesson I use summative assessment to determine if they have improved. In future lessons I will re-test the student to see if they have retained this knowledge.

I use Google Meet and Google Documents which is shared with the student. I create individualised versions of my teaching documents for each student and they can retain access to the Documents after the lesson.

Hello, my name is Marc, and I am a Worcester-based tech enthusiast specialising in providing patient, practical, one-to-one computer and device coaching for older adults and absolute beginners. My primary area of interest is community-focused digital literacy, particularly helping the older generation overcome the fear of modern technology. I want to empower people to feel confident online, shop safely, avoid scams, and comfortably use their devices.I am fully mobile, love to travel, and look forward to tutoring face-to-face within Worcester and the immediate surrounding local areas. I am highly comfortable travelling directly to clients' homes or local community hubs, allowing them to learn in the quiet, familiar environment where they actually use their devices every day. I have spent years providing informal, hands-on technical support to older family members, neighbours, and friends.Through this informal experience, I have successfully taught absolute beginners how to comfortably master their tablets, set up and organise new smartphones, and safely navigate the internet. This background has given me deep, practical insight into the specific anxieties, frustrations, and roadblocks older generations often face when interacting with modern tech. I am highly proficient with all major daily platforms, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Skype, online banking, grocery apps, and email management, and I know exactly how to guide someone through using them for the first time.

Tutoring Approach:
As a neurodivergent individual, I naturally view problem-solving through a unique lens. I know firsthand that everyone processes information in their own way, which makes my teaching style exceptionally patient, adaptable, and empathetic. I do not use rigid textbooks or confusing technical jargon. Instead, I break complex tasks down into small, manageable, bite-sized steps.If a concept or a task doesn't click with a student using a standard explanation, I readily adapt on the spot and use clear, everyday analogies until it makes total sense. I believe that a comfortable, low-stress environment is essential for learning, which is why I travel to my students' homes. No question is ever too small, too simple, or silly in my sessions, and we will always move entirely at the student's own preferred pace.

I am a passionate, dedicated and experienced Mathematics and Physics tutor with over 15 years of teaching experience. I hold two Master's degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, earned in France and South Africa respectively. My strong academic and engineering background has given me an excellent understanding of Mathematics and Physics and their practical applications.

I have over 15 years of experience teaching Mathematics and Physics to students of different ages, abilities and academic levels. I have supported students in developing their subject knowledge, improving their problem-solving skills and preparing effectively for examinations. I am comfortable working with students who need additional support as well as those who want to challenge themselves and achieve higher grades.
