About Michaela:
Hi everybody keen on learning something new :o) My name is Michaela and I am a young, energetic and experienced teacher/tutor. If you asked my students what my lessons are like, they would most commonly answer that they are both fun and hard work at the same time so they always learn a lot while working in a stimulating and relaxed environment.

Teaching Experience:

I am a Czech native speaker currently working in the UK. I have an MA degree in Secondary Education (Teaching of English and German).
In the Czech Republic I worked as a languages teacher in a kindergarten, secondary school (mixed grammar school) as well as in several private language schools so I have previous experience teaching children, teenagers and adult learners.
I also have a five-month teaching experience at a mixed comprehensive school in the UK where I taught German at KS3, KS4 and KS5. Afterwards, I worked as a freelance tutor preparing students for their German GCSE and A-level exams.
At the moment, I'm working as an EFL teacher in Bournemouth delivering lessons to
learners of mixed nationalities.

Tutoring Approach:

I am reliable, motivated, patient and enthusiastic.
My main strengths are the ability to understand students' individual learning needs, employ a wide range of teaching techniques and remain calm and professional under pressure.
I look forward to hearing from you soon :o)

About Kirsten:
I am 20 years old and currently in my third year of BSc Zoology at the University of Edinburgh. At school I was a straight A student, achieving 5 A's in my Highers, of which my favourite subject was Biology. I then continued to study Biology at an Advanced Higher level, achieving a final grade of B. At University I have achieved consistently high marks and am currently aiming for a 2:1 grade at the end of my Junior Honours year.

I am an enthusiastic, reliable person who would bring a great deal of enthusiasm into the job. Although I would expect each tutoring session to be thorough and require good concentration I would conduct it in a warm, casual manner where the tutee would feel relaxed enough to, hopefully, enjoy what I am teaching them and would feel free to ask any questions where they feel necessary.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who feels that they would like a little extra help to achieve their grades to the best of their abilities.

I am available for tutoring from now until the end of March.

Teaching Experience:

So far my tutoring experience has been limited to helping my younger sibling through her Standard Grade biology course. This is a subject which she has greatly struggled with and class tests reflected a basic lack of understanding of Biology in general.
In the run up to her mock exams before Christmas I tutored her in the subject areas that she most struggled with and monitored her past paper results to identify areas in which she needed more help.

Through her own hard work and my extra help she achieved an overall 2 for her mock exam - a huge improvement from her previous low general and fail marks. With her real exams fast approaching I am continuing to tutor her in order to help her maintain such a good grade and even improve on it.

I have also been asked to help several of her friends who have struggles with the subject and it is my goal to assist them in achieving credit grades in their Standard Grades.

Although this is my first real tutoring work I have a wide range of experience with children and young adults both through babysitting and my involvement with the Girl Guiding movement where I was a young leader for both Brownie and Guide groups for a period of roughly 2 years. Such experience has prepared me for work with people of varying ages which I feel is hugely advantageous for a tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a great enthusiasm for biology and I would approach tutoring with the same sense of enjoyment I gain from my own studies. I aim to make Biology, not a subject to be dreaded, but one which offers an exciting insight into the world around us.

While I expect my tutees to be hard working I would want the teaching environment to be informal as I am a firm believer in the fact that it is far easier to learn in a relaxed environment rather than piling on the pressure.

Additional work would be set if deemed necessary, likely to be in the form of past papers which I would mark in my own time.

I want to make Biology a subject which each tutee will appreciate and hopefully even learn to enjoy as much as I do.

About Kate:
I am Polish, originally from near Krakow. I am friendly and always looking to meet new people. I am comfortable working with both adults and children. I qualified as a teacher in Poland and have had my qualifications translated into a British equivalent.

I am passionate about helping people acheive their goals and feel that I'm capable of helping people become confident, not just proficient, with the skills I am teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching children, teenagers and adults on language courses, at state schools and on private lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

I use different techniques and methods in teaching English dependant upon the learner's age, learning abilities, students' needs and interests. I teach English to children through play (games, songs, drama etc), teenagers through various exercises and acivities based on their interests (lyrics, films, texts, drama), in adult teaching I prepare different tasks involving skills they want to improve (speaking, listening, reading and/or writing).

I also take into acount the type of learner my student is, whether s/he learns better through the written word, listening or doing and teach them necessary learning techniques so that students could effectively acquire knowledge.

About Vivienne:
I am an Independent Educational Consultant specialising in Dyslexic Disorders. I have been a private tutor for many years and have tutored over 200 students. I have worked with many gifted children and those also who find education a challenge. I specialise in special needs.

Teaching Experience:

Over 20 years teaching experience with 18 years specialising in special needs. Over 10 years an an Independent Education Consultant specialising in Dyslexia. I am able to offer tuition to students with ADHD, ADD, and Autistic spectrum disorders.

Tutoring Approach:

My general approach to teaching is to enhance individual skills by providing an individual programme for the student. This allows the student to learn independently instead of the learning associated within schools of one size fits all. Unfortunately, this does not work with many children who need a structured individualised approach.

About Lorna:
I have a First Class (Hons) degree in Psychology from the University of Reading and am going on to study for an MSc in Psychological Research Methods at the University of Exeter. I am planning to go into research in developmental psychology, in particular developmental psychopathology, but found all areas of the subject interesting while at university. I have a passion for studying and am keen to share this with tutees. I grew up in Belgium so foreign languages have played an important part in my daily life and education. I believe speaking more than one language is an important skill in our current globalised society and am eager to share my multilingual upbringing with others.

Teaching Experience:

I have some teaching experience through working as an au pair in Spain in 2005, where I taught English to the two Spanish girls I was looking after, as well as two local children. They had various levels of understanding which allowed me to gain experience of tailoring a class to the individual needs of the tutee. I also worked as a classroom assistant in a school for children with special educational needs in Reading, which involved helping the children with reading as well as organising games and arts and crafts for them. I attended the intensive weekend TEFL course run by i-to-i and through this have learnt much about efficient lesson planning and encouraging and communicating with students who may have little or no understanding of the English language.

Tutoring Approach:

I would take an interactive approach to tutoring as I believe it's important to learn in a relaxed and friendly environment and 2-way conversation, rather than being talked to, enhances understanding of the topic. I think, particularly with younger tutees, the use of games and possibly outings, is important in gaining a deeper understanding of a language as it allows practice in relevant situations rather than simply learning by rote from a textbook. I believe lesson planning is vital so that there is a clear aim for each lesson. A certain amount of written work would be required in order to gauge the individual's level and assess progress, but I would not use this as a sole teaching method as I believe discussion is vital to understanding the logic behind a particular topic. I am a naturally patient person and appreciate the frustration that can arise from not grasping a topic but I believe working through a problem together will give the tutee more confidence in their own ability to reason through any difficult points.

About Katharine:
I am a Cambridge graduate, with an MA in Literature, and a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE in English and Drama from York University. I have taught for several years in a leading Belfast grammar school. I also work as an examiner for GCSE English, A Level English Literature and A Level English Language, for NICCEA, AQA and WJEC examination boards. This work gives me extremely valuable insight into what is required to achieve excellent grades at GCSE and A Level. I offer rigorous exam preparation, tailoring each session to the needs and learning style of the individual student. I provide detailed revision materials and advice on exam technique.
I prefer to work from home, but am willing to travel within a reasonable area, although I may have to charge a small fee for this service.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for several years in a leading Belfast grammar school. Prior to this, I taught in two comprehensive schools in England. My career has given me experience in working with students of varying academic abilities, and I am well placed to both stretch the able, and provide support for those who need it. I have an excellent track record of results at both GCSE and A Level.
Through my work as an examiner for several exam boards, I am fully conversant with a variety of GCSE and A Level syllabi. I am able to adapt my approach with each student, to pinpoint exactly what they need to focus on to achieve the grade they deserve.

Tutoring Approach:

I start a tutoring programme by having a meeting with the student (free of charge), to review examples of his/her work, so that we can jointly discuss what is required. I take account of each student's individual learning style so that each session is appropriately focused, with clear aims and objectives, and material is presented in an easily accessible way. My approach to each session is to derive maximum benefit for the student and as I believe that the most effective learning occurs in a relaxed atmosphere, I aim to develop a friendly rapport with my clients, and engage their interest through a variety of appropriate activities. I also take regular feedback from students and their parents, to assess how the tuition programme could be improved.

About Rossanne:
I'm currently a student of philosophy at the university of bristol (in my last year). I perform music professionally on a regular basis.

Teaching Experience:

I've taught primary school children before in swindon (two at a time). I am also about to start teaching at a primary school in Bristol - hopefully starting in January or as soon as my CRB check is completed. Teaching experience isn't all that is needed, you also need to have had experience of being taught by lots of different types of teachers, and I've been playing all of my life and so have had this in abundance! I can remember my reactions to different styles of teaching, and I think that's important in order to judge a pupils reactions to the way that you teach. I think you need to adapt to each pupil.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't think teaching music is all about how to play the right notes in the right order. You need to get the feel right too or else you might as well let a computer play it for you. Music is not an intellectual excercise. Also I'm not interested in teaching someone who doesn't want to learn the instrument and only do it out of parental pressure.

I also offer support for essay writing or study skills at university level. I have also previously studied Theatre Studies, Drama, Media and Dance, so I can teach these subjects for GCSE / A level as well.

I live in Shoreham-by-Sea and conduct lessons either in my home or I visit you. Should I need to visit there may be an additional charge for petrol and /or parking, depending on where you live. I have also recently set up teaching on Skype.

If you are interested in learning on Skype you need a fairly new computer, so that the memory is enough and a webcam. Windows Vista, XP or the equivalent Mac is best. If you are not sure of using the computer for this but are still interested in lessons please contact me, as I offer a free 20 minute introductory session in advance of the course and am happy to spend some time discussing the concept of learning on Skype, so that you can decide if it is the right option for you.

I also run a service where I can look at work e-mailed to me and comment on it, even if you do not actually want lessons conducted via Skype. Prices depend on what work you are sending and how long it will take me to do the critique. I take work up to degree level for English or related subjects.

I also have an MA in Creative Writing and have had poems published. I am able to give critiques for Poetry that you have written. I charge 20 to comment on up to six poems.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English for over 10 years. This has been both in Further Education and at private colleges. I also have extensive experience of one-to one tutoring and also teach Theatre Studies, Media Studies and Drama .

About Damien:
Hello, I am a Masters student in Biotechnology at the University of Manchester. I originate from France, where I studied Physics and Chemistry for my undergrad. I chose to study science for I am a very curious person and wanted to understand what happens around us.
Patience and adaptability are my assets.

Teaching Experience:

Back home, I tutored physics and maths for one year to A-levels students.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to start by going through the syllabus with the students to identify their weak points. Depending on the students' needs, I focus on re-teaching things in a different way or solving problems and past examination papers. Most importantly, I try to make the students enjoy doing science!

About damaris:
I am a Social Science graduate who's passionate about languages, psychology and the social sciences. I enjoy keeping up to date with research in the fields I'm interested in and one of my medium term goals is to undertake research (PhD) in Sociology. I'm genuinely interested in people and I like helping others to develop their full potential, which is the main reason why I chose to go into academic tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years of teaching experience, both privately and as part of voluntary work I undertook. i taught Spanish and Catalan to immigrants in Barcelona, helping them pass language school exams and prepare them for job interviews. During my last year at university and first year of postgraduate study, I tutored first year undergraduate students in Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Spanish. My tutoring work included preparation for exams and help with essay writing. I particularly enjoy this last aspect, and all my tutees improved their grades by at least 1 point! I have also successfully helped students with two dissertations in Business and Management.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning can be an enjoyable experience that can boost your self-confidence and belief in yourself. I very much prefer to talk about 'learning' than about 'studying', since I put more weight on the experience of learning by itself as natural part of your daily life. I'm confident I can make you enjoy learning and discovering interesting things about your subject. Try it, you have lots to gain!
