During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. During 2005/6, I mentored a pupil (Year 10/11) at St. Peter's High School, Longsight, organised by the University of Manchester. I can provide tuition to individual students (or small groups) in the form of friendly, relaxed lessons. Teaching sessions are always customised to meet the specific requirement of the students. Generally, I enjoy teaching and considered to have a caring approach. I use a combination of computer and 'white board' based approach, for creating informal interactive / discussion type sessions, with some form of regular tests and re-cap sessions. Closer to the exams, the lessons are much more focused on using past papers covering a wide range of questions, to enable the students increase their confidence in preparation for the examinations.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching style is structured and thorough. I start every lesson with a five minute recap of the key content of the previous session, checking how much the tutee remembers. A typical lesson will then consist of a translation, in which I ask the tutee to note down each unknown word as it is encountered and to devise a memory trick which will help them to recall the word in a five minute test at the end of the lesson. Together with the tutee, I will then pick a grammar point which stood out in the translation exercise as requiring the most immediate attention. We will spend five to ten minutes working on that, with the tutee's understanding tested with some reinforcement exercises. At the end of the lesson we will recap all the new vocabulary and grammar which was covered, and I will typically set a manageable 20 - 30 minute homework for the next session based on what was covered in the lesson. Every lesson is of course different, and tailored to the tutee's requirements, but I find this approach works in the vast majority of cases. I consider grammar to be crucially important, but treat it as a means to an end and always emphasise the ways in which it can be usefully applied to translation rather than learned in isolation. I believe that any tutee can excel in Latin and Greek with a little guidance and a decent amount of independent work. Above all, I strive to make my lessons fun and enjoyable. Half my students tend to be preparing for exams, using techniques I've perfected to help guide them through their exam periods. Most students will tend to require confidence boosting and I've had the most satisfaction being able to change opinions/beliefs about the subject, helping to show the student that they're capable of anything they set their mind to.

Since university I have enjoyed tutoring part time and full time and was also contracted for a few years by Honiton Community College to provide individual and group tutoring sessions to underachieving students, during and after school.

Teaching Experience:
I started tutoring GCSE maths part time in Year 13 (S6), providing a very structured tutoring by my school. The students engaged well and it helped to have people of a similar age that the students could relate to, enabling a more relaxed learning atmosphere. I also informally helped peers of various levels whilst at university, maths students but also engineering and foundation levels. When my services were required in a particular area, then they asked for help on short notice.

I've been tutoring full time over the past 14 years, working 7 days a week from the new academic year onward. Peak hours ranged in excess of 40hrs. I've therefore assessed the likely weaknesses of a student and have already provided and perfected the best methods of explanation.

Tutoring Approach:
Casual tutoring of areas of difficulty, or can do more structured learning of a curriculum, either intense learning (several school years of maths into months) or weekly troubleshooting. I've established good quality material for any level. Plenty of students just require good material and direction for their efforts, with positive reinforcement to really shine. Many long term students will tend to then appreciate and enjoy study, visibly moving towards their goals.

The first meeting will be free with the aim of getting to know one another, and establishing the strengths and weaknesses of the tutee, and at the pace the student requires. At which point a structured plan of action can be drawn up. In some cases the tutee may lack the confidence in certain areas, but can in fact do what's required. Even a casual troubleshooting session every now and then can set their worries at rest.

Should extracurricular material be required or wanted then I'll be happy to provide. This material might not be hard for the tutee, but will help link in various areas of mathematics and will require a little thought about the patterns seen. It's never compulsory, but with a little encouragement a little extra goes a long way.

Tutoring Approach:
I find an informal style works best, particularly with secondary school students. The 1-to-1 (or small classroom) nature of tutoring lends itself well to this style, and over the years I have found that creating an environment in which the student is at ease and not afraid to make mistakes is essential to the learning process.

Having discussed the content of the lesson with the student / parent(s) prior to the lesson, a typical lesson would usually start by clarifying what the student expects out of the lesson and what knowledge I hope to impart upon the student. Using A-level Maths as an example, let's assume for the moment that the student is completely stuck at differentiating using the quotient rule (a common complaint I've received from students). I typically set the student a warm-up problem and ask them to do it whilst I watch. I watch and make mental and written notes of the key steps where their understanding is lacking or where their procedure for doing the question could be improved. I then discuss this with the student, and often, I take the time to derive the rules from first principles, with the aim of forming links in the student's brain so they don't "think" about answering the question next time. As an example, the quotient rule and be derived from the product rule, and once I show them this (not often done at school), the logic behind it is no longer opaque, and the student is often able to perform better on subsequent problems.

We then typically work through a subset of increasingly more challenging problems, and I resist the urge to tell the student the answer, instead asking targeted questions to guide them in the right direction. I almost always set homework problems, including at least one stretching problem, which are tailored to the needs of the specific student I am teaching, and we begin the next lesson by clarifying anything from the problems. Most lessons, I naturally make links between the content and my own career or another example from the world of work. I find this gives the students context and enthuses them.

Importantly, I don't recommend further tuition when it is not necessary. As an example, you may decide to start with hourly lessons twice per week. As your child's understanding and confidence grows, we may decide together that we feel comfortable dropping down to once a week. This is an excellent outcome that we can take pride in. I view my job as not only to impart knowledge and turn that A into an A*, but also to give the student the tools they need to direct their own learning.

I am originally from Turkey and I came to England to pursue my dream as an SEN specialist. I studied MA Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education at Manchester Metropolitan University.

In the mean time, I topped up my knowledge studying 2 years foundation degree in Child Development to have more of a professional perspective on early years/Foundation stage.

In 2018, I moved to England to start my MA studies in Special Needs and carried on teaching 1-1 ever since I graduated in 2020.

I worked with several children/teenagers/young adults across Manchester within different settings. I got trained in Applied Behavioural Analysis/ABA and tutored in this area offering behavioural support alongside the academic support I have been offering.

Teaching Experience:
I have several years of tutoring and teaching experience across a range of age groups. I began by supporting younger students in Years 3-4 with Maths and English at school, and helped organise assemblies to build their confidence and communication.

In sixth form, I tutored GCSE Maths students (Years 10-11), helping them prepare for exams with structured revision and personalised support.

My teaching style is calm, structured, and tailored to each student. I begin by identifying their strengths, gaps, and preferred learning style, and then adapt my sessions accordingly.

I guide students through concepts using worked examples and intuitive explanations, and encourage active problem-solving so they build confidence step by step. I never just give the answer-instead, I offer prompts and hints to help students arrive at solutions themselves.

I place a strong emphasis on exam technique and confidence-building. Once a topic is understood, I support students with targeted exam-style questions and past paper strategies.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes, but I'm flexible depending on what a student needs that day.

Personal Description:
I'm 55 years old, married with two children and three grandchildren. I'm patient and personable, relaxed and professional. My hobbies currently revolve around entertaining my young grandchildren, and reading and gaming when I have time. I am also a part-time pastor of a small Christian church in Southport.

I attended Liverpool John Moores University as a mature student and was awarded a first class degree in English Literature and American Studies. I subsequently completed a PGCE course at the University of Liverpool and qualified as a secondary school teacher in 2000.

Teaching Experience:
For 23 years, I was a member of the English Department at Sacred Heart Catholic College (now Academy) in Crosby, Liverpool. In that time, I taught students from 11-18 and gained experience in whole class teaching and individual and small group tuition. I helped develop schemes of work and lesson plans, and was also a head of year for three years. For many years, I ran after school clubs including a role playing group and a school fiction magazine.

Since 2023, I have been working as a supply teacher at a range of schools in the area, including a year-long stint at Meols Cop High School in Southport from September 2024-July 2025.

Tutoring Approach:
I have had limited experience of private tutoring, but my approach is to assess tutees' strengths and weaknesses through fairly straightforward baselining and focused questioning. Once areas for improvement have been identified, more specific activities will be designed depending on the needs of the tutee. These will invariably involve practice of some kind - whether of writing or reading skills - followed by a discussion of how to improve.

English is a more skills-based than knowledge-based subject. In my experience, most students are well aware of the areas in which they need more help, but struggle with how to develop those areas - precisely because they are not something which can be addressed simply by acquiring or reinforcing knowledge. Having a tutor to talk to helps - to identify and improve those skills which students need to succeed. My aim is to provide practical, easily understood advice, tailored to the tutee's unique circumstances and structured to give them confidence in the subject.

Personal Description:
I am currently employed as a maths excellence specialist, working towards my teaching qualification. I have a degree in mathematics as well as A-levels and GCSEs in the subject. I love helping others and find it extremely rewarding.

Teaching Experience:
I have been working in secondary schools since 2022. I am very passionate about maths and with my school I offer numerous tutoring sessions during the week to aid year 11s and further maths students. With my placement I offered remote tutoring where I received a very complimentary email from the head teacher after their child had joined and suggested my tutoring sessions were better than their own private tutor.

Tutoring Approach:
I start with a past paper to find any gaps in knowledge and plan accordingly to fill them gaps and correctly scaffold to achieve a strong understanding of the concepts. I will have questions pre-printed or available on my laptop depending on the topic.
