Personal Description:
I am an academic and scholar who holds both a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a MLitt (Master of Literature) from The University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours degree from The University of Paisley.

Since 2006, I have been a personal tutor in several subject areas including English, English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies, Theatre Studies, and General Writing Skills. I have successfully taught a wide range of students off-line from pre-exam age (11+) to Standard Grade, Higher, and university level, and on-line for pre-exam level (12+), GCSE, AS level, A-Level, university level, postgraduate and the adult learners over this time.

I have been requested as a guest lecturer and reader/reviewer for several monographs and journal articles, which have successfully been published. I am currently working on my fifth book and have some chapters in forthcoming edited collections.

I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I truly believe that every child matters. Supporting children to grow academically and emotionally has been incredibly rewarding and I remain most grateful for my career in education.

Teaching Experience:
I have a wealth of knowledge with the KS1&2 curriculum and have extensive experience preparing children for year 6 SATs. In addition, I have worked as a KS2 examiner, to mark SATs papers, giving me valuable insight into assessment expectations and standards.

I have strong experience supporting children with SEND and neurodivergent learners. I understand the importance of adapting teaching approaches to ensure every child feels engaged and capable of succeeding.

I help children in building confidence, exam techniques and independent learning skills to help them succeed academically.

I provide personalised support for primary-aged children, including:

Year 5 and year 6 booster classes

7+ and 11+ preparation

Year 4 pupils Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

My approach to teaching is centred around creating a positive, supportive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to succeed. I believe that all children learn differently, so I adapt my teaching methods to suit each child's abilities and learning style.

I aim to make lessons engaging, interactive and enjoyable. I place great importance on developing strong relationships with both pupils and parents. Good communication and teamwork between home and school are essential in helping children make the best possible progress. I also understand the pressures of family life and always try to be flexible, approachable and supportive.

I'm a retired academic in psychology and education with over 25 years experience teaching and supporting students in HE on undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in the UK and internationally.

Teaching Experience:
Specialism in psychology, particularly child development, cognitive development, psychology in education, language and communication, child health, research methods and stats, SEND, inclusion, emotional health and wellbeing. Expertise in inclusive approaches to teaching and learning for students from diverse contexts, and with additional needs.
Supervision of research projects at UG, Masters and Doctoral research.

Tutoring Approach:
Tailoring support to the individual learner - finding out their strengths and challenging areas, and their learning styles.
Working with their current feedback from assessed work (if available).
Setting achievable goals in collaboration with the student.
Providing feedback on draft work
-Support with study skills including making effective notes from reading and lectures, literature reviews, synthesising evidence from research and applying theory, making effective arguments.
-Oral presentation practice and support.
