I have just finished a PhD in maths at Newcastle University so it goes without saying I'm enthusiastic about both maths and physics. On top of this I have a wide variety of interests, and this allows me to find ways of explaining things that the people I'm tutoring can relate to.

Personal Description:
If you needed a doctor, dentist or lawyer then you would want someone who was fully qualified and very experienced. So don't settle for anything less when you need a tutor. To get the best out of your tutoring, and hence the exam grades you want, make sure that you are getting the following:

1. Someone who will sit beside you and teach you in person. If the covid-19 pandemic has taught us anything then it has taught us that online tutoring can't hold a candle to having a teacher in the same room as you.

2. Insist on someone who is a qualified teacher. Just because someone has passed a few exams themselves doesn't mean that they will be able to teach their subject well. That's precisely why we have teacher training, to help people learn how best to convey that knowledge to others.

3. Insist on someone with plenty of experience. Practice may not make perfect, but it usually does make one a lot better, and this is often the case in teaching.

4. It's very important that a tutor knows their subjects very well and really enjoys them. Without both of these they are never going to be a good teacher.

Let's see how I measure up to these criteria. Well, I only teach in person, and from my home. On several occasions I have been offered online work, but always refused it, as I really do believe that I would be offering students a much inferior service. I have a Joint Honours B.Sc. in chemistry and physics, and for my PGCE my main subject was mathematics, and my secondary subject was physics. So I am well qualified in all the subjects that I offer: maths, further mathematics, chemistry and physics. My PGCE is from the University of Leeds, which has a very good reputation for its teacher training. I also have many years classroom and tutoring experience. As for knowing and enjoying my subjects, those who come to me for tutoring can see my large collection of maths, chemistry and physics books. I have also had a subscription to Scientific American for decades. I read maths and science for fun. Maybe that's why I gave up a very lucrative career as a software engineer to become a teacher. This is also why usually I only offer tutoring at A-level or equivalent, because I particularly enjoy teaching at this level. However, I am currently accepting a limited number of Y11 Higher Level Maths GCSE students.

Students studying maths might also be interested to know that I have written books about the best graphics calculators and also the Classwiz. So it's very likely that I'll be able to show you how to use your calculator much more effectively, which could save you time and mistakes in your exam.

Over the years many students, and their parents, have been very happy with my tutoring. Perhaps you will be too.

Please also note that I ONLY TUTOR FROM MY HOME: no exceptions. Among other reasons, this allows me to teach many more students, some of whom have been known to travel a considerable distance in order to get the right tutor.

Teaching Experience:
Let me be very frank. In the UK teaching in most schools is much less enjoyable than in many other countries. Behaviour, and what the school is prepared to spend on a teacher are often major issues. For students who genuinely want to learn this has serious implications. How qualified and experienced a teacher is may not be be a school's main recruitment criteria. Foremost may be their cost. A well qualified and experienced teacher will cost significantly more than a much younger one, so many older teachers' applications are often passed over. Also much greater weight may be given to classroom "management" skills, rather than the ability to teach ones subject.

Most of my time teaching in the classroom has been spent abroad, with a lot of it in private schools. For these schools neither behaviour nor salary is a major issue, so they recruit and retain teachers based on how well they can teach their subjects. This is the environment in which I have done my many years of classroom teaching. My years in the classroom have been spent in schools where ones teaching ability is paramount.

In regard to tutoring, this has been my main source of income for the past ten years, and most of this time has been spent teaching A-level, or the equivalent. It's probably fair to say that I spend many more hours teaching A-level than most classroom teachers, and as such I know what most students need, and where they are likely to experience difficulties.

I am a retired university lecturer in Mechanical Engineering with a PhD from City University of London and a BEng from a leading Chinese university. I also worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. My entire career has been dedicated to academic research and higher education, and I have worked as a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at a university in London for 23 years. For the past 8 years, I have been the Course Director for an Engineering Foundation course. I also acted as a liaison officer to a private institute specialising in providing university foundation courses, helping with course design and assessment moderation. I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2006.

I believe that every student can succeed in Maths and Physics in both GCSE and A-level with the right guidance. My experience teaching foundation-year students means I am exceptionally skilled at identifying and bridging knowledge gaps, building confidence, and making complex concepts accessible, especially in Physics. My teaching experience is primarily at the university level. As a senior lecturer, I taught Fluid Mechanics
and computational fluid dynamics modules to Year 2, Year 3, and advanced aerodynamics to Master's students. This high-level teaching gives me a unique perspective on the skills and understanding students need in Maths and Physics to thrive at top universities, which I integrate into my tutorial sessions.

As Course Director for the Foundation Year, I worked intensively with students who needed to strengthen their core maths and physics knowledge before starting their engineering degrees. I am a Biomedical Master's student with a First-class BSc. in Biochemistry. I studied Maths (A*), Biology (A*), and Chemistry (A) at A-level. I offer well-rounded Maths and Science tuition geared towards the UK syllabus at competitive rates, and have a passion for life sciences.

Teaching Experience:
I have over 7 years of experience working as a private tutor, and have taught Maths, Biology and Chemistry to students ranging from KS3 to A-level. I also teach Physics to GCSE level. I also have worked as a volunteer mentor in my secondary school, helping children learn how to study and do exam preparation, and have worked as a mentor for Zero Gravity, providing university entrance advice and feedback on personal statements.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe learning works best when it feels more like a conversation, which is why I use the Socratic method. It's centred on asking questions and encouraging curiosity, guiding a student step by step so they discover the ideas, patterns and solutions themselves. My lessons are structured but never rigid. Personal Description:
I live in Woking & work in a college in Weybridge. I've enjoyed teaching & tutoring maths & physics all my working life & even during my years working in engineering. By far the most important thing for me is for a student to feel relaxed in a lesson & know they are not being judged about topics & theory they are not confident with. This is as important for my students aiming for A* at A level as it is for a student who just wants a bit of confidence & repeatable methods to achieve a grade 4 or 5 at GCSE. I have always had an interest in maths & Engineering & feel very fortunate that this is my profession. I also enjoy a modest amount of cycling & swimming together with tennis.

Teaching Experience:
I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol & worked in industry within the hydraulics & gas sampling sector. I am a qualified teacher, specializing in gcse/igcse maths & physics and A level maths at schools in Surrey. I have taught maths & physics for 15 years & for the past 6 years I have enjoyed teaching maths & Engineering at a college in Weybridge. Throughout this time & my time in industry I've had continuous & extensive experience teaching learners one to one, tailoring my teaching very much to learners individual needs.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching starts with gaining an understanding of how the student feels about the subject, how they learn best, whether its by following examples, going through specific theory or starting from the building blocks eg fractions & algebra. Many difficulties go back to primary school where few principles were thoroughly explained & embedded, sowing seeds of difficulty when moving on to more advanced arithmetic & algebra in secondary school. My teaching is very relaxed and emphasizes a consistent repeatable approach to solving problems, trying to see the connection between what you are given & what is being asked, a crucial skill for all learners. This is by far the best way to allow students to build their confidence both to get through the grade 4 barrier and to gain fluency in those last grade 8 & 9 questions in the High level papers.
I also extend this approach to A level learners to ensure everyone can reach their full potential. It is no secret that early and very extensive exam practice is a huge part of exam success. My fluency in the specifications allows me to help learners focus on sometimes small subtopics & wording that can make all the difference to achieve a high grade.

I feel having genuine empathy with the learner, their hopes & fears and where they wish to be with their maths or Physics is the most important must of teaching. All other aspects of achieving follow from this.
