Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. When did you start tutoring?
I have started tutoring one of my classmates while I was still in secondary school. It was a rewarding experience and it is quite interesting to go back to those times and compare how much has changed over the years in my lessons.

Why do you tutor?
I was always passionate about explaining Maths and Science to my peers back in school but I could have never imagined that it would become such a core part of my life. Tutoring is not just a source of income for me, it's something that makes me feel valuable in society, it allows helping so many amazing students around the UK to proceed in their future studies and careers. And it was never just theory and exams that we cover during our lessons, my tutoring sessions inevitably involve critical thinking and applying the knowledge in real life, thus I can contribute to students' lives even more.

What is your biggest tutoring success story?
Creating my own professional database of exam-type questions (the aforementioned startup) proved to be a success in my tutoring career since it allowed to spend more time and energy on creating quality resources for students and reuse them during different lessons. It was hard to see the value of the questions initially, but I have noticed that some students started to appreciate them so much that they no longer want to use a textbook during our lessons and I can focus more on their solutions rather than creating questions on the spot. What is your biggest tutoring failure?

For 10 years I was a professional performer of dancesport, I was a swimmer with fins, a solo singer and participant in various science olympiads. Tutoring Approach:
I prefer classes to be carried out in small groups, or ideally, one to one.
I try to make the lessons as fun and engaging as possible, as from my experience, that`s the best way to make students want to learn, and remember what they`ve learned.
I use the `5 whys?` approach to prompt student to think by themselves and work towards the answer rather than just relying on the tutor to give them the answers.
If my students show great potential or interest, I am more than willing to introduce more challenging questions and concepts that can be beyond the syllabus (upon request).
I will explain every formula that are introduced briefly so that students first understand how and why they work, which will help them a lot in remembering and when/how to apply them.

Occasionally, A small test will be carried out to judge students` level at the first lesson, I will then have a small chat with them to understand which parts they have least confidence in and know their requirements and aims to ensure we get on track and work towards the correct direction.

I am a PhD student at the University of Manchester researching materials for applications to nuclear fusion. I try to keep my sessions relatively relaxed as I strongly believe that the best way to learn is when you feel most comfortable. As a fellow student, I can relate to my students and offer them some advice about their studies outside of the classroom. After graduating with a Mathematics degree I worked at the University of Manchester for a number of years and also gained an Msc in Epidemiology (Medical Statistics). I have gained most of my practical teaching experience from my time in the NHS, where I worked as an information specialist. I gained a PGDip in Management at Bradford University and went on to work at all levels in the NHS, ending as being the National Director for Analysis. In that time I have taught mathematical and statistical skills to hundreds of NHS analysts, and delivered degree level research training to staff at all levels for over 20 years,

In 2018 I set up my own training and consultancy business which aimed to teach, train and support staff at all levels in their use of data and I subsequently was awarded the Northern Enterprise Awards "Best analytics and research training provider - Yorkshire" in 2021.

This experience has made me ideally placed to understand the different ways that people learn, and the areas that can be seen as difficult. The training skills I have developed means that I approach tutoring in a different way than those with a formal PGCE which can be of great benefit.

Every learner is different, so I like to find an approach that works with each of my students. Having taught people who struggled with subjects at school I try to find easy examples to illustrate particular concepts. I also believe that humour is a key part of the learning environment, and that learning should be enjoyable as well as educational.

While I am happy to meet face to face, I find that online tutoring works equally well and has the advantage of being able to record sessions that can be used by the student when revising. The use of interactive whiteboards still provides a great learning experience, and whiteboards can also be saved for the student to use later.

I put an emphasis on a deep understanding of each concept, theory, method, and observation, dissolving misconceptions, as well as acquiring and mastering technical skills. For online lessons (single or group), I use an interactive platform where I as well as the student can write on the lesson slides, so we can answer questions, write derivations and make clarifications in writing. The platform also allows for online interactive simulations that bring theory to life. This platform is also used for in-person sessions for faster responses and a more stimulating and interactive lesson. For group tutorials at home, I utilise a physical whiteboard in my living room on which both I and the students can write, in addition to slides presented on a screen. In all cases, the whole lesson is available for revision as a pdf file after each session.

My name is Beth, I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. I managed to receive 8 grade 9s during my GCSEs and 1 grade 8, as well as 3 As in my A levels (Maths, Physics and Graphic Communications). In the future I'm hoping to work in robotics/prosthetics, and I have such a genuine interest in both maths and physics (especially space and quantum!). I also love cooking and playing basketball.

Teaching Experience:
On top of my tutoring experience, I've just returned from my second year working at a youth summer camp in Canada. Here I was required to teach the kids wilderness survival skills, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, arts and crafts, and plenty more! We were also required to teach them leadership qualities and responsibilities, as well as fun camp songs and dances, with everything being very interactive.
