More than almost any other subject, maths needs confidence to be built, and a patient, individually tailored approach. Others find A-level maths harder going, and an imaginative and pictorial approach with plenty of real world examples is needed to achieve that "penny drops" moment!

Depending on the student, tuition may include any or all of: coaching to consolidate (or anticipate) teaching at school; revision for examinations; working through past examination papers; teaching and testing of specific sections of the curriculum; or more free-wheeling exploration of mathematical topics. By agreement with students and parents, homework may be set and marked.

I'm available to teach at almost any time in the week, either on weekdays (daytime or evenings) or on Saturday mornings. Sunday is my day off! I'm happy to teach in my own home, or in students' homes in Cranleigh or up to 10 miles away in the surrounding area in Surrey and West Sussex, including Guildford, Horsham and Godalming. I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. I will first try to ensure that the concept and the base of the subject is strong before we go on to a number of past paper questions and exercises. I believe that the best way to learn is to see how any problem can be tackled, go through the thought process and then apply what you know to the specific problem and solve it.

I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.
