Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. My experience has led me to believe that one-to-one tuition is the best way to educate pupils. It brings them to the realisation that the whole point of education really is to set us free. It's not easy for a student to discover this when confined every day in a class of 30 or more others! Learning to think independently as an individual, and to read and write fluently enables pupils to participate fully in society, to achieve their full potential and thereby become happy, confident adults. Once the student is enthused and inspired by a tutor to think for themselves there is only one way forward.

I like to encourage pupils to develop independent thinking and logical analysis. Too many schools are teaching the children WHAT to think when they should be teaching them HOW to think. Naturally, many pupils become disengaged and even some of the most talented are simply going through the motions rather than actually studying. This lack of motivation together with highly inflated grades means that many of our youngsters are leaving school with minimal reading and writing skills. Indeed, few now have the aptitude for doing much reading, thinking or writing at all.

I like to build up the student's confidence by establishing their strengths first. Thereafter I identify weaknesses and gauge the student's awareness of them and motivation to put them right. Above all, I encourage my students to read widely and with full concentration. My best students learn to read closely and publish their reviews on Amazon. Aside from the huge adrenaline run, the boost in confidence and proficiency students get from seeing their writing in print is awesome to behold!

To put it simply, when they're reading they start succeeding!

Homework set weekly by me will always involve reading, thinking and writing. My feedback will always concentrate on reinforcing the idea that the writing process never ends with the last full stop. I expect students to read back their work to ensure that their writing communicates their meaning clearly and fluently. Editing with the focus on making the right word choices, organising sentences with the words in the right order and structuring longer writing assignments into coherent paragraphs are all priorities schools are increasingly neglecting thereby greatly hindering the life chances of their pupils..

Once the student and I have agreed which areas need improvement we use lesson time to extend the student's competence and skills by undertaking thinking and written assignments that allow the student to develop these.

Weekly homework set will advance and reinforce the skills the student has been encouraged to bring to the lesson.

I graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc (Hons) in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2003 and a year later completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the same university. My approach to teaching conceptual misunderstandings is that any idea can be understood by anyone, as long as it is deconstructed into small enough steps and that the student is walked through each step at the correct pace. For exams, I believe that active recall (recalling and using information from memory alone) and studying mark schemes are the best way to revise.

My name is Elliot and I am an English tutor based in Central London. I have been tutoring since 2018 but my background is in Law. I have a Bachelor of Laws (2.1) from the University of Birmingham and a Master of Laws (LLM Human Rights Law) from the University of Nottingham (Distinction). For three years, I worked as an immigration lawyer in the UK before deciding to tutor full-time. I have lived in several different countries and am a keen language learner myself. As someone who has recently experienced what it is like doing the new style of GCSE`s and A-Levels, I understand and recognise what works best in order for students to excel beyond what they think might be their limits. Having achieved 9 A*`s at GCSE(6 "9`s" for GCSE and 3 "A*`s for IGCSE) and A*A*A*A at A-Level recently, I understand what approach works best in order for a student to excel and what the exam boards are looking for so that the pupil can achieve the best grades. I am able to teach a wide variety of exam boards.

I have been teaching since my sister was learning to talk but I first started as a private tutor at age 14. I was lucky enough to teach a class of 30 girls just after I did my GCSEs at age 17, and from there I went on to start my own business.

I worked for myself as a private maths tutor for 3 years before working at London School or Science and Technology and I am now back to private tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching style changes depending on every student I face. I would identify as having the facilitator style which is someone who encourages self-learning by asking the student questions rather than telling them the answer.

I also specialise in last minute GCSE revision where I am able to make the subject matter seem much simpler than how it is explained in many schools.

I have done a huge amount of work with ADHD and dyslexic students so I have had to deal with about every behavioural issue there is with the utmost patience and I experience a lot of joy in learning how the students get to the answer.

I have created many lesson plans myself for ages 4-16, which include animated PowerPoints, mainly in maths but I am happy to create them for any subject.

I always begin with a game or a riddle just to get thinking cap on and then we will tackle a subject with an explanation and worked examples.

I'm Mel, a father of three children living in Manchester. I tutor for entrance exams and GCSE and KS3 Maths, English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Additionally I tutor A level Biology and welcome adult learners.

Teaching Experience:
For the last ten years I have tutored hundreds of students in Maths, English, Biology, chemistry and Physics. I've also taught a number of students in the US, China, Russia, Canada and many countries in Europe. To date I have taught 20,000+ lessons.
