Personal Description:
I am a fully-qualified professional teacher with more than 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience, both in the UK and abroad. I regard myself as a friendly and approachable tutor, as well as honest and conscientious, and I pride myself on being able to communicate with students of all ages, from pre-teen to pensioner.

I am the father of two boys, and we live in the Sutton area. My wife and I successfully tutored our sons for Sutton's grammar schools (WCGS), and they have since both graduated from top Russell Group universities. My hobbies are limited to reading these days, and I am particularly fond of English Literature. Dickens and Hardy are two of my favourites, but I am also keen on modern and less serious writers, such as Tom Sharpe and the two Rankins - Robert and Ian.

Teaching Experience:
After obtaining my first degree in Spanish with Politics and Economics, I started teaching abroad; first in Spain, then in Turkey, and later in Central Asia and the Middle East. Since retraining as a teacher of English, I have taught for more than 15 years in the UK and almost 15 years abroad, where I was Head of Department at an Institute of Higher Education for three years.

Most recently I have taught English at an independent school in Sutton, and previous to that I taught Academic Writing for East Anglia University for several years. Nowadays my tutoring is split between English for the 11+ and Common Entrance (13+) exams, English for KS2 and KS3 SATs, and English, Spanish, Economics and Politics & Government for the GCSE and A-level exams (all boards).

11+ and 13+ (Common Entrance)
I am very happy to report that all but one of my twelve Eleven Plus tutees passed the SET (Selective Eligibility Test) for Sutton's grammar schools last September. Of these, 100% of them passed the second stage exam and obtained their first choice of grammar or independent school. I use a selection of published materials and those of my own creation, and insist on a high standard of weekly homework in reading, writing and language knowledge. For 11+ pupils I start tutoring in Year 4 or 5, whereas 13+ pupils begin in Year 7 or 8.

KS2 and KS3 SATs
I usually start tutoring for the KS2 SATS in Year 5, and in Year 8 for the KS3 SATs. I tend to use a mixture of focused texts and past papers.

GCSE and A-level
I am equally happy to report that all of my most recent GCSE and A-level students have passed well, with top grades from B to A* (A-level) and 6-9 (GCSE). The majority of those have gone on to their first choice of further and higher education institutes, and in most cases this has been achieved by my insisting on regular homework done to a high standard. For GCSE pupils I prefer to start tutoring at some time in Year 10, whereas A-level students typically begin around Year 12.

I also provide individual tutoring in ESSAY WRITING and STUDY SKILLS, as my experience has taught me that many students at GCSE, A-level and undergraduate level face real problems in these areas. By working together on your essays, substantial improvements can be made in style, organisation, argument, presentation, and much more. This way, I can teach you how produce more effective and mature essays, and thus help you to obtain better grades and increase your confidence in producing written work.

Tutoring Approach:
With every tutee I carry out an initial assessment of his/her needs and abilities, and my teaching begins from there. Typically I work on improving their weaknesses and consolidating their strengths, and this essentially involves them producing high-quality homework on a regular basis. I use both established published materials and those that I have created myself over the years. This approach appears to be successful, and I can provide references.

I am an LSE graduate with a BSc in Accounting and Finance and postgraduate qualifications in Statistics. I am currently a dedicated and passionate full-time private tutor specialising in Economics, Business, Accounting and Mathematics.

I was fortunate enough to receive a very good private education myself and originally started tutoring as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others and help students realise their full potential and all the wider benefits that come from a good education. Seventeen years later, tutoring has become my full-time career.

• I helped a student improve from a D at AS Economics to an A at A2 after eight months of tuition. He was the first student at his school to achieve an A in the subject since 2007.

• I helped another student improve from a C at AS Economics to an A at A2, achieving 97%, 99% and 100% across three individual Economics units.

• I worked with a student with mild learning difficulties who improved from an E at AS Economics to a B at A2. This became his highest grade across his A-Level subjects.

• In Mathematics, I have helped students gain places at leading independent schools, including Eltham College and Bromley High, as well as helping students make significant improvements in their GCSE and A-Level grades.

At university level, I have taught Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Business, Accounting, Finance and quantitative subjects to students at a range of UK universities. I have considerable experience working with international students adapting to the demands of the UK education system.

For A-Level Economics, I have extensive experience across Edexcel, AQA and OCR specifications and understand that excellent subject knowledge alone is not sufficient to achieve the highest grades. A significant part of my teaching therefore focuses on examination technique, application, analysis and evaluation.

After 17 years of tutoring, I have worked with students of very different abilities, personalities and learning styles. This experience has taught me that there is rarely one correct way to explain something; successful tutoring is about finding the explanation that works for the individual student.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching approach takes a long-term view of learning. I want students to be successful in their immediate examinations, but I also teach them in a way that prepares them for higher study and makes them more confident in their academic abilities generally.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation of academic success. I therefore spend considerable time making sure these foundations are secure before moving on to more complicated material.

If a student doesn't understand something, I don't assume they are incapable of understanding it. Sometimes it simply needs to be explained differently. My job is to find that explanation.

I am a strong believer in understanding rather than rote learning. I want students to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, rather than simply memorising and reproducing something they have seen previously. Once a student genuinely understands a concept, they are much better equipped to apply it to unfamiliar questions.

I also encourage practical understanding. Particularly in Economics and Business, I frequently use real-world examples to make abstract theory more relevant and memorable. Where appropriate, I relate material to businesses, financial markets, government policy and situations students are likely to encounter outside the classroom.

As examinations approach, I increasingly focus on applying this understanding to exam questions. This includes question interpretation, structure, application, analysis, evaluation, time management and understanding exactly what examiners are looking for.

Finally, I believe successful teaching is ultimately about listening to your students. I constantly encourage students to question things and tell me when they don't understand or are unsure.

If a student appears hesitant, I will often ask open questions or ask them to explain the concept back to me. This allows me to understand their thought process rather than simply establishing whether they have arrived at the correct answer.

I have high expectations of my students and expect them to put effort into their studies, but I also want them to feel comfortable making mistakes. Mistakes are often the quickest way for me to identify exactly what a student doesn't understand and therefore what I need to explain differently.

Ultimately, my aim is to make students increasingly independent of me. A successful student should eventually have the knowledge, confidence and skills to tackle difficult problems themselves.

I have been teaching for the past eight years and am currently Head of Law and a teacher of Economics at a secondary school rated as outstanding by OFSTED. Previous to teaching I graduated in 2006 from Loughborough University with a BSc Hons degree in Banking, Finance and Management, I then worked for three years as a trainee quantity surveyor on a civil engineering project at the Olympic site in Stratford before training to become a teacher. In my spare time, I enjoy taking part in sports, especially track running and cross country.

Teaching Experience:
I am a teacher of A-Level Law under the AQA examination board. I am currently teaching both the old and new specifications for A-Level Law. I also teach both Year 1 and Year 2 Economics on the OCR specification A-Level. As well as preparing students for their exams, I am also confident as a head of subject in providing individual intervention strategies to supplement learning. I also have experience mentoring newly qualified teachers and students.

I consider myself an approachable teacher and am confident in tailoring the learning dependent on the tutees needs. As well as revising key concepts, I will also ensure students are confident in preparation for the exams by looking at analysis, evaluation and application techniques. I am a qualified teacher, head of the department, and a senior examiner with more than 17 years of exam marking experience in all three subjects that I tutor.

I work with a range of students (students looking to improve their grades and others who are making sure they achieve their high grades). I work with students from the United Kingdom and overseas that are either preparing for exams or are going to study the subject for the first time or are being home tutored etc. I have my own study material - workbooks, quizzes, videos (youtube channel), etc.

I have tutored students from all top schools - Eton, Westminister, St Pauls, Notting Hill, Whitgift, Oxford High, Northampton High (I used to work there and they had their best ever results), Oundle, etc

As an individual, I have a jovial personality and I make good use of it during my sessions; it ignites the sessions and adds joy to learning; take my word for it! I have a surface pro with a pen for online lessons. In economics and maths, I use an online whiteboard which students have permanent access to, to write notes and solutions to exam questions. My approach is to accelerate students as fast as possible through their given course using exam material to deepen and develop their knowledge. I find I can accelerate students rapidly in maths (at GCSE and A-level), whilst they greatly enjoy the subject and the sessions. Students quickly improve at school too, which gives them extra confidence in their talents and capabilities. I set students past papers questions and we resolve any difficulties they had in the session. Iterating through past paper questions in this manner leads to exceptional results: a student of mine came in the top 1% in the entrance exam against Oxford University applicants and gained a place. Similarly, students excel at 11+, 13+, GCSE and A-Level in this manner. Practicing exam material and constantly pushing myself is how I achieved first class hons at the University of Oxford (as well as how I exceled at school), coming top in Game Theory in the exam, so I believe in this approach.

Focus on question practice as I believe that a student can have all the knowledge in the world but if they do not know how to apply it correctly then they will not be able to access high marks, with Economics a focus on understanding and mastering how to write perfect essays are key and with mathematics repitition is key in order to solidify topics into the long term memory.
