Personal Description:
As a teenager I was lucky enough to receive tuition myself and it made a huge difference, so I really know how much of an advantage it gives.

Tutoring is my full-time job and has been for many years.

I am extremely quick at identifying student problem areas and devising the most efficient solutions, sometimes with budget or time constraints. Where necessary I focus on exam technique as I find many capable and knowledgeable students gain confidence (and marks!) once these skills are taught.

My students like me and can sense that I want the very best outcome for them, and understand they are under pressure to succeed, and my services are frequently recommended to siblings and friends.

Since March 2020 I have tutored online using Skype, Zoom, Bramble and MS Teams.
This way of tutoring is surprisingly effective and time-saving, with results as good as in-person tuition,
something I probably would not have discovered if it were not for lockdown, as before then I always tutored in person.

Teaching Experience:
As well as many years continuous home-tutoring experience, I have taught in both state and private sectors since 1986; examples being Surrey College (Guildford), Horsell High School (Woking) and Farnborough College of Technology, and the prestigious Seaford College in Petworth, W.Sussex. I recently completed two terms at Farnborough College of Technology as a Physics lecturer.

I have a vast library of past examination papers in all my subjects at GCSE and GCE A level for Edexcel, AQA and OCR examining boards.

In addition I have some experience tutoring both common entrance and Baccalaureate Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

Tutoring Approach:
I appreciate that for most students, private tuition represents a workload additional to both schoolwork and homework.

Therefore I aim to make tuition as interesting, interactive and productive as possible- whilst focusing on their objectives- usually a target examination grade. Experience has shown that students can expect learning progress with an experienced tutor such as myself to be without exaggeration, 2-4 times faster than could be made in a typical school classroom, whilst simultaneously gaining a fuller understanding of the topics covered.

I like to understand my clients' needs, their particular strengths and areas for improvement. I teach the topic in the best possible way to match their learning needs. The key is for them to understand the topic by linking to something which they previously now. This creates a connection in their brain to help them remember and understand the concept long-term. I believe that a clear understanding of theory should be followed up with a range of examination style questions to test if the student has truly understood the work.

It is vital for students to truly get excited about the subject so by using real life examples, they can remember concepts more easily. I believe in going through problems with the students first and showing a clear example, then allowing them to practise until they understand and can do the problems on their own. Furthermore I sometimes guide them in the right direction without actually telling the answer so the child is able to figure it out for themselves. I would follow the syllabus provided and teach every topic in suitable order. Then I had work through past papers and leave them papers and homework on each topic to practise. I would try to create a spark and make the pupils interested in the subject so that they can pursue their further studies with more enthusiasm. Finally, I always listen to the client and exactly what they require so I can adapt my approach.

All that I can say is that Ellie is fantastic. When she was teaching myself and my brother A Level Chemistry, she always gave short, concise explanations of concepts in a way that we easily understood. Also, she gave us past paper questions after each topic so that we had plenty of practice at exam technique. She marked these and sent us feedback on what to improve on. This meant that when it came around to do our exams, we were fully prepared for them and confident that we could do well. Tutoring Approach:
In 2016, I set up my own tuition company and currently operate this full-time. Tuition has an advantage over teaching in that it enables me to better help students on an individual basis. This level of help is often difficult to achieve in a classroom environment, which can be very frustrating for both the teacher and student. I'm a graduate of the University of Cambridge (Murray Edwards College) in Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics, with over five years of teaching experience. After university, I spent a year as a Science teaching assistant in a top Oxford senior school, and a further two years as a classroom teacher abroad, mainly in China, where I taught Physics and Maths A level. I just finished studying for a Masters in Environment, Politics and Development at SOAS in London. I live in Brixton and am available for online or in-person tutoring and have a flexible schedule.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:
I like to explain concepts using real world examples that students can visualise and recall the next time they have to answer a question on that topic. I absolutely love Science and Maths, and aim for my enthusiasm to rub off on my students! Previous tutees of mine have said I gave them confidence and passion for their subject while made them feel comfortable to dig deep into their understanding of topics without feeling scared of making a mistake.
