I like to understand my clients' needs, their particular strengths and areas for improvement. I teach the topic in the best possible way to match their learning needs. The key is for them to understand the topic by linking to something which they previously now. This creates a connection in their brain to help them remember and understand the concept long-term. It is vital for students to truly get excited about the subject so by using real life examples, they can remember concepts more easily. I believe in going through problems with the students first and showing a clear example, then allowing them to practise until they understand and can do the problems on their own. Furthermore I sometimes guide them in the right direction without actually telling the answer so the child is able to figure it out for themselves. I would follow the syllabus provided and teach every topic in suitable order. Then I had work through past papers and leave them papers and homework on each topic to practise. I would try to create a spark and make the pupils interested in the subject so that they can pursue their further studies with more enthusiasm. I will first try to ensure that the concept and the base of the subject is strong before we go on to a number of past paper questions and exercises. I believe that the best way to learn is to see how any problem can be tackled, go through the thought process and then apply what you know to the specific problem and solve it.

I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.

I like finding out how the world around me works, and am keen to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others. I also enjoy making or tinkering with things - I have customised a button accordion to play bass notes more flexibly, and have added extra buttons to video game controllers. In school I designed and constructed a solar-powered light of adjustable brightness. Patterns appeal to me. When I am not involved in science, I do Scottish Country Dancing, as well as many other genres of folk dancing with intricate symmetrical dance figures. My study of several languages, including Latin and German, allows me to identify parts of scientific terms that I can use to help my students understand them - for instance a recently discovered non-repeating tile is named Einstein not after the physicist but because only one ('ein') type of tile or stone ('stein') is needed to make the pattern. I find Richard Feynman inspiring. He himself got into science through tinkering and discussions with his father about how things worked. He spoke on beauty in nature, and that scientific understanding only enhances its appreciation - as well as seeing the beauty of a flower, a scientist can also wonder at its smaller structure, and how it developed to attract insects to pollinate it. What does this tell us about how bees see the world?

Personal Description:
A little about me: I'm Shaun, an 24 year-old originally from Dulwich. I'm just finishing my first year of a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bath, and I have a first-class MSci in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, where I also helped lead tutorials and peer-assisted study groups. After my undergraduate degree, I worked as a Specialist Junior Chemistry Demonstrator at the University of Oxford, where I gained my AFHEA accreditation (Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy). These roles gave me solid, formal teaching experience and also helped me learn how to support neurodivergent students in a calm, friendly, anxiety-reducing way that seems to work well.

Teaching Experience:
I have extensive experience teaching A-Level Chemistry, including supporting students who haven't taken A-Level Physics or Maths and therefore find the calculation-heavy topics tough. I've been tutoring privately for around 8 years, and a lot of that has focused on building confidence with moles, equilibria, rates, thermodynamics, redox, and the general maths side of the course.

For example, one of my recent tutees - who's just about to start a paramedicine degree - initially left every maths question blank. We worked on how to break questions down: how to read them properly, pick out key information, and what to do when you feel stuck. By the end, he was attempting these questions with confidence, which made a huge difference to his grade.

Tutoring Approach:
I usually teach via Zoom or Teams using an interactive online whiteboard so we can work through problems step-by-step. If you want, I can also prepare short presentations or typed notes for specific topics. Most students find online lessons just as effective as in-person, especially for structured calculation practice. And since I'll be entering a paper-writing phase soon, in-person sessions may become possible again later next year
