First off I have to state that I love learning and teaching new stuff, and also I believe teaching is the older brother of learning; as you can not say that you have learned something deeply if you are unable to teach it to someone that does not know it; like I play chess and have been the 6th table player of my municipality's chess team. Even though I have attended many many games with that team I was not aware of the fact that thinking simple would actually be a benefit in any game, and I realized this when last year I have aided an association's chess team in stars category as an educator. Tutored online for 4 years and tutored with Explore Learning for 1 year in person and online both. I tutored GCSE to a level maths and Physics.

Tutoring Approach:
Initial lesson for mathematics involves an assessment - this can be through a past exam paper. This allows me to determine what level the student is working at currently and also what topics need to be focused on more than others. From this I pick a topic to base the next lesson on. The lesson compromises of exam questions and taught material.

For physics I ask the student which exam board they are studying and which topic to focus on for the first session. I then plan a lesson on the topic by doing a question-answer session (It will be like recapping then topic with the student through questions used to prompt their memory). Normally questions are in flash card form. Then for the second half of the session I do exam questions from the exam board the student told me. These are topic based so each lesson will have questions focused on what was covered on the day. I send the notes from the lessons to the student as pdf files too. I write reports after I complete a lesson so parents know what the lesson covered and what to expect for upcoming sessions too. The more fluent a student becomes in answering questions- that shows progress is being made.

I also would say I have a recent and relevant understanding of the GCSE syllabus and examinations, especially in the sciences since I am currently taking a Bsc Environmental Science degree and my passion for science has only grown since I took my GCSE's.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring will be adapted specially to each student, depending on how they prefer to be taught but also recognizing weaknesses in the syllabus and working on those until overall confidence is build. I hope to teach in a creative, interactive way that will not only build confidence in the syllabus but also in exam technique and exam nerves too, especially for GSCE students. I am happy to teach all exam boards of combined Science GSCE and the sciences separately too.

Personal Description:
Hello, I'm Donald - experienced tutor. I was educated at Edinburgh University and worked in the nuclear power industry for over 30 years. In that time I have undertaken teaching activities of various types. After retiring (2010), I started part time private tuition, with good results at all levels.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a private tutor since 2010, with an average of about 10 pupils, weekly, during school term. I am happy to give tuition in-person, or online using Zoom and my own overhead camera system.

Tutoring Approach:
I mainly study past paper questions jointly with my pupils. I try to lead my pupils through the questions in an interesting and challenging way, with my pupils doing much of the work. I make sure that all the key learning points are understood before moving on.
