I am a fully qualified economics and business teacher with 20 years' experience in secondary schools, and now as a full-time tutor. I taught economics in secondary schools for over 10 years, but I am now a full-time tutor. I will always begin by discussing my tutee's individual requirements and areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. Students may ask to recap concepts and theories that aren't fully understood, however in my experience most require help with exam technique, and how to translate their knowledge into a high grade answer. I therefore place a great emphasis on guiding students through the process of answering past paper questions, across all topic areas. In our sessions I will help with essay structure, illustrate how to use higher order analytical and evaluation skills, and crucially, how to apply an answer to information in a case study, or how to bring in real world examples.

Over the years I have taught an increasing proportion of students online, so that currently about 90% of my tutoring is done this way. I use Skype/Google Meet/Zoom and Google Docs, which students can also access. "Matt only got an E grade in his February A2 mock exam and the school predicted he would get a C grade at A2. With the significant assistance from Ian, Matt achieved an A* at A2. Matt was initially very apprehensive about being taught on Skype rather than in person. But Skype proved really beneficial. GRADE 1 OUTSTANDING - OFSTED (from 2002 to 2024!)
I have been the Head of Accounting since 2006, at a large Catholic Sixth Form College in Hulme, Manchester. I am 46 years old, living in Didsbury, South Manchester. I gained my degree in Economics and Finance in 1998 from Leicester University. I began teaching in 2002 so have many years of experience teaching Accounting.

I mainly offer tuition at my home, or a local library, either at the weekend, or weekday evenings. However, I am usually able to offer tuition during the school/college holidays.

Teaching Experience:
I completed my PGCE at Manchester University in 2002. I only teach Accounting AS and A2 Level, and this is therefore my main specialism. I can also help students in need of tutoring on the Finance elements of the Business Studies A Level, or on Accounting/Finance elements of Business/Accounting/Finance degree courses.

Many tutors are not willing to advertise the results they have achieved with students. I recommend you read the section below on the results i have achieved with my A Level Accounting students.

Also, many tutors seem to offer tuition in a wide variety of subjects. Are they really specialists in so many different subjects? I am an Accounting specialist, and only offer tuition in Accounting or the Finance elements of a Business course. If you need a Maths tutor, then hire a Maths specialist. I have a background in senior industrial and commercial management, both in the UK and overseas; also senior experience in the public sector (local government and NHS). I took time out in my thirties to gain my PGCE.

I have never taught full-time (although I was once up to around two-thirds of a full timetable). I have worked in further education colleges and as a supply-teacher, mostly in secondary. I currently lecture on an executive MBA programme for a leading European institution, alongside co-managing a consulting company. I am also a Research Officer for British Mensa and my research interests focus on high-intelligence related concepts and toxic leadership systems.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught for many years in both sports and business faculties, from A level to undergraduate, pre-Masters, Masters, MBA and PhD level. I have also presented at a number of European and international academic conferences. I hold a PGCHE (Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Higher Education) and am now an executive MBA lecturer and research fellow.

I am a qualified, teacher with over thirty five years experience teaching and tutoring Economics and Business. I have worked for all the major examination boards as a moderator, examiner and question setter. I have a great deal of understanding of what GCSE and A level examiners are looking for in awarding top grades. I firmly believe that the majority of teachers and schools/colleges do their best to help their students. However, many students have weaknesses especially in their written work. To gain high grades students need to be able to analyse, apply and evaluate their knowledge but those skills are often not developed by their school or college. However, my experience and individually focused sessions can remedy this and as a result my students soon are making far better responses to essay questions, data response and case studies than before they started tuition. I am currently Head of Economics in a highly successful inner London secondary school. I have taught for 10 years across various exam boards and also have experience as an A-Level examiner for AQA. I am a co-author for the most recent GCSE Economics workbook by published by Hodder Education.
