Academic experience: I have worked in private tutoring, state and private schools, university departments and know how examiners mark and what they expect. Painting and exhibiting for over 15 years professionally, specialising in oil & acrylic portraiture, landscape and abstract subject matter, My paintings foundation is from a hyper-realistic background, a portrait style which I studied and explored during and after my university education, while in recent years expanding to expressive mark making and more ambitious subject matter.
My main passions are within the visual arts and teaching drawing and painting. I'm also experienced teaching people with mild to severe learning difficulties, ADHD, autism and epilepsy whilst exploring art in a therapeutic way to help learners with diverse abilities and needs reach their potential.

I've been teaching for over 12 years, conducting 1:1 sessions and workshops to students with varying abilities, skills and mixed age ranges.

I am an avid musician and educationalist, with a passion for sharing my interests in music and learning with children and young adults. I have been teaching German and EFL for more than 30 years from beginners to advanced level. I used to teach German to GCSE and A level at what used to be Plymouth College of Further Education as well as EFL from Cambridge KET to Cambridge Proficiency. That does not mean that my approach is inflexible, however - if one approach to teaching does not suit the individual learning needs of the student, I will endeavour to teach the student in a way that they are happy with and which will lead to the best possible results.
As a teacher of foreign languages I very much favour the communicative approach but I am also more than willing to teach grammar as this also plays an important role in language learning. As languages are meant for speaking I place a great deal of importance on oral work - particularly at GCSE and A level - but once again, the needs of each individual learner are paramount.
