During my research I worked as a Private A level tutor for the children of a number of overseas Professors - teaching A level Physics and (through one of those students) was invited to teach Physics to A level students at a Ladies Grammar school in Manchester when their teacher became ill. I also taught A level Physics at the Trafford Park College of Further Education in Stretford, Manchester for 2 years

Tutoring Approach:

One to One - focussing on parts of the curriculum where the student is having difficulty in understanding
Create a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. The student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. One-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students' personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.

Depending on the student's needs and learning style I encourage students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don't lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students' homework for them!

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring since leaving university, and have worked with many students who are currently studying for their GCSEs and A levels. However, I have no teaching experience in schools or teaching qualifications.

Tutoring Approach:

I generally prefer to let the tutee have a go at the questions they're working on, only giving them help when I feel they're at a loss as to where to go next. This is mostly due to my own experience of learning maths as I found that, when I managed to solve a problem by myself, I tended to more easily remember how to do it again when it came to revising for my exams. However, the main reason I got a first in maths was because I went over and over previous examples and questions until I'd learned every method and could solve every problem, so if need be I will just work through a question for them (obviously ensuring they understand each step as we go along) and simply let them pick up the methods that I'm using. This way I can be sure that they have a solution that they understand and can look back at in the future for guidance.

Having focused my early life studying and tutoring Physics and Mathematics, I graduated from Kings College London, one of the Russell Group of universities with a 2.1. I took up an opportunity to train and work in Finance and Accounting, gaining experience working for organisations including the National Westminster Bank and a Fortune 500 company. Having spent over ten years successfully working in this area, I felt a change in direction and wanted to reengage in my original interest of teaching. As well as gaining work privately, I have been working as a tutor for several charities.

Teaching Experience:

Over 3 years experience tutoring Maths, Physics and Science. Duties have included assisting with homework, using workbooks to support the classroom led learning, working through past papers and running revision classes focusing on model answers and exam technique. I have been brought into schools to work with pupils and raise their attainment. Reliable and enthusiastic with a supportive approach.

Tutoring Approach:

While I do cover the methods and applications to worded problems, asking questions is at the heart of my tutoring. This is important because:

Personal Description:
An A level examiner for AQA and OCR, I specialise in only two (related) subjects, Business Studies and Economics.

Teaching Experience:

For 14 years I taught Business and Economics at a large school where I was the KS5 Coordinator (in charge of A level) for these subjects. As a 6th Form tutor I advised many students on University applications. I have also taught other subjects to younger year-groups.

I managed many other related activities such as Enterprise Education, Dragons' Den competitions, my school group in Vodafone's 'Take a Chance' programme, the school Yearbook - produced completely by students for profit - and the school's sailing club.

Before that? From reading History at Oxford I went in to construction project management in UK and abroad. I was developing very large energy projects in S-E Asia when the 1997-8 financial crisis in that region encouraged a career change.

Tutoring Approach:

Every student's needs are different. I have tutored a wide range; from a home-schooled student following a complete A level course to one wanting an hour a fortnight to improve exam performance. Their locations have ranged from a couple of miles away to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We will emphasise a successful approach to exam technique, which is critical at every level to achieve the highest grade you can. At the same time we will bring the real world of Business and Economics into our tutorials, which makes them a lot more fun to teach as well as to learn.

You have your own virtual classroom with whiteboard, document swapping and audio and video links. I now tutor full-time - online only - after three years training myself while gradually reducing my school timetable and testing Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) platforms to find which offers greatest ease-of-use.

I am a qualified science teacher and mum of two young boys. I graduated in 2001 from Heriot Watt University with a physics degree and have been teaching since 2003.

Teaching Experience:

I recently moved back to Scotland from the South of England where I had taught Physics and Biology to GCSE level for the last 12 years. I also taught Chemistry and Geography to S1 and S2 equivalent (plus a bit of Chemistry to GCSE).
I have also done some tutoring both in England and here in Fife.

Tutoring Approach:

Working with the student to find out where they need help I will explain concepts that they find difficult using diagrams and examples and will ask the students to complete questions on that topic. I will also link topics and concepts together and ensure the basics are understood before moving onto more complex ideas.

Personal Description:
I am a native French speaker, aged 21, currently working in a school in Gateshead as a French Language Assistant, so I am already used to teaching my own language. I also aim to become an English teacher after completing my teaching degree in France. I will be in Newcastle until the end of May, when my contract with the school ends. After this I will go back to France to finish my studies.

I am passionate about literature and music, and would be able to teach cultural aspects of France if that is what you are looking for. I have also always loved languages since I was a child, I learnt English and German from the age of 10, I also did some Spanish and Russian at the end of secondary school, and I have been trying to learn Italian for the last few months. I would be glad to pass on this love for languages.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently teaching French in Gateshead as a French Language Assistant. As part of my teaching degree in France I also did a short internship in a French secondary school.
