About Matthew:
Hi! My name is Matthew Baker, I'm a 23 year old PhD student, studying High Frequency Electronics at Cardiff University. My main hobbies are SCUBA diving, Wakeboarding, Sailing...as you can see, in general I like to be in the sea!

I am originally from Loughborough in England.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of teaching children and young adults of all ages (6-22 years old). I currently teach small group seminars and demonstrate laboratory skills to Undergraduate students at Cardiff University.

I have previously worked as a Watersports instructor in America; although this teaching rarely involved classroom work, I believe that the skills required to convey information to the student are exactly the same.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very patient and enjoy the challenge of helping pupils find their way in subjects they find difficult. Being (relatively!!) young, I still remember the frustration and anxiety of struggling with some topics at school; I believe that the best way to help a student is to take some time to find the underlying misunderstandings they have with the subject and address these problems. This is all important in building confidence and understanding of the subject.

About Sian:
I am a professional writer, with three books and several articles published. I write about eighteenth and nineteenth century history. I have two small children and live in central Brighton.

Teaching Experience:

Before I became a historian, I travelled a great deal and taught English and British history to children, teenagers and adults in England, Italy, Spain and Australia.

Tutoring Approach:

I think students need to be stimulated to learn, which means tapping each individual's imagination and capabilities. Compared to many teachers, I am strict - firstly because I think students will take a subject more seriously if they see their teaching being serious about it; and secondly because if you're paying for a lesson, you need to get the most out of it.

About Nyein:
I have recently (June 2007) been qualified to graduate with BSc (Hons) Physics with Space Science degree from University College London (UCL). I will be continuing with my studies for Master's level in Applied Mathematics or Theoretical Physics and aim to follow research and teaching career. I am fluent in English, Burmese and Japanese and I also have computer programming skills. I am patient, which is most important in teaching, relaxed, flexible and friendly.

Teaching Experience:

Most of my teaching experience come from helping fellow students, teaching an adult person on a foundation course and through dropping into a few peer-assisted learning (PAL) sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

My approaching to teaching is to make students learn through examples. In doing so, students will not only gain problem-solving skills and understand the theories better, but also will be well-prepared for the exams at the same time. I believe it is very efficient way to learn and most suitable for subjects like Mathematics and Physics which you cannot remember everything but must try to understand underlying principles and must be able to apply them in different contexts. However, different students have different tastes to different teachings and I am therefore prepared to be adapt the way the student wants me to.

About Vijay:
"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" - Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir - The Sign of Four

Which words catch your attention the most in the above quote? - Words "Impossible" and "Improbable" of course. These two words are by far the most strongest ever words that rule the world of possibilities and probabilities. Our day to day life revolves around these words, yet we stay quite unaware of them. We are pursuing the "Truth" behind every material, immaterial entity that we come across.

Even I'm a crusader in voyage of conquering the unknown. Well I had this knack of revealing the unveiled face since infancy. Though I believe Impossible and Improbable lures around, but my fight with them prevails. Every time I face such a situation, I find myself to win it out. Might be 'cause I know what the result will be. Might sound optimistic, but that's how I'm. I graduated in Bachelor of Computer Science and Engineering (1998), also did MBA from Middlesex University (2005) . I have worked in Investment Banks as Business Manager, Project Manager, IT developer & Business Analyst.

Teaching Experience:

Since childhood I always liked Maths, Science and IT subjects. All modern advancements (computers, mobiles, wireless, internet, digital TV, emails) are gifts from these subjects. I always wanted to be in touch with the concepts. The only way I could find was to teach 11-16year old friends. I have taught GCSE level, A level students. They have achieved good scores in their results. I get personal achievement through their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe everyone is different (just like the fingers in your hand). I also believe in structure. Hence I prefer to adapt a study structure as per the individuals needs. At the same time I don't stick to routine, I prefer to work out what suits best with the individual. To me Learning shouldn't be a chore, one should enjoy learning.

About Fani:
I am a PhD student doing research on Iranian Cinema. I have studied Film Studies in both undergraduate and graduate level and wish to share this knowledge with others. I enjoy explaining theories and ideas in simple terms and this has been my writing style throughout my academic studies. I am looking forward to an academic career focusing on teaching and lecturing. I am a native Greek speaker and could also teach my language to those who are interested. I am very friendly, encouraging and supportive, sensitive to people's emotions, perceptive of how others feel.
My education has given me a valid foundation from which I can proceed in offering to others what I have learnt and what I have found out myself, giving them space and time to also discover more.

Teaching Experience:

Unfortunately I do not have any teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

Although I have got no experience I could use the experience I gained from the others that taught me. What I enjoyed from my own tutors such as helping me to understand, to discover things my self and to express myself freely-independence and support- is something I wish to keep when teaching others. Nevertheless what I disliked, such as being overly critical over one's mistakes or impatient when one does not learn or understand on the pace he/she is expected, is something that I will avoid. I believe in listening to others before doing the talking and sometimes let the others lead the conversation in order to see what they are interested in and what they can learn from me.

About Laura:
Hi, my name is Laura and I graduated from Bath Uni last year with a degree in Maths and Computing. I am a keen tutor and hope I can help most students regardless of age or abilility.

Teaching Experience:

In my free time at Universty I tutored students privately for SAT, GCSE and A-Level exams, in Maths as well as other subjects including Science and Technology, and and all were a success. I have also been teaching badminton to students back at my old school.

Tutoring Approach:

As it hasn't been too long since I did my own A Level and GCSE exams, I can remember how stressful it can be as well as the best exam techniques and ways of remembering things. I have a very flexible approach to tutoring and will try to tailor the goals and teaching style to suit the student as much as possible. I try to build up the pupils confidence, especially in maths, and to make it more interesting so that it will stick in their minds. The most important thing is that they feel they are making progress and are comfortable enough to ask whatever questions they need to.

About Joseph:
I am 53 years old and have spent all of my adult life living abroad. I recently returned to England after living 9 years in France, 15 years in California, 8 years in Cuba and 2 years in Ecuador. My partner is Cuban so any Spanish classes could also involve

I bring with me the experience and colour of living in very different countries and systems.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught TEFL in registered language schools in San Francisco, California and also in Cuenca, Ecuador. My students were all adults in post-graduate studies.

I have tutored both Spanish and French conversation.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to teach one on one because of the rapid progress a student makes to the satisfaction of tutor and student alike. I myself learned Spanish this way before going on to study the language in college.

Because of the nature of our society today, I would prefer to teach anyone under 16 at their home with one of their parents in the house.

About Claire:
Hello, My name is Claire Woodhead. I'm currently in my third year at John Moores University in Liverpool studying to become a Primary School teacher. My main subjects are maths and English at primary level but I am also a keen art enthusiast and pursued this at school completing my A level in Fine art.

For the past three months I have been working in Austria as an Au pair living with a family of four children. This gave me the opportunity to greatly improve my German and also work closely with children.

Teaching Experience:

Studying on a teaching degree, I have so far completed two teaching placements. This I feel counts towards my formal teaching experience. My informal teaching experiences also include my work with a local cub scout group and also teaching the children in my Au pair job simple English.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a relaxed approach to learning. I feel that the child needs to feel secure and safe in the place they are learning. They also have to want to learn, therefore especially with younger children, tutoring would encompass games and activities that involved kinesthetic processes as well as visual and auditory learning. An example of this would be to act out a paragraph from a text using props and expression, allowing the child to become involved in the text aiding their understanding.

Teaching german to a higher level, I would still encompass the kineasthetic learning approach using language cue cards and role play to aid grammar understanding. The use of music can also aid learning in this situation, reading and learning from text and paragraphs in german that are of relevance to the student can also greatly aid development and support the work the child does at school.
