View Rachael's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Rachael: I have always had a passion for education and teaching. I am currently completing a Masters in Philosophy and Religion. In September I will be commencing a Secondary PGCE in Religious Education. I enjoy working with children and have sound knowledge of children's unique educational needs. When teaching children my overall aim is to help them recognise their true potential by developing their self esteem and confidence and providing them with the necessary skills to tackling their work more independently and positively. |
Teaching Experience: Over the past three years I have worked as a literacy tutor and supervisor for the charity Springboard for Children. Throughout this time I have obtained accreditation from the Open College Network in teaching children with literacy needs. I am able to plan lessons, set IEP's (Individual Educational Plan), structure my time effectively and provide lessons which are multi-sensory and child specific. I have taught children aged between five and eleven with a range of learning difficulties, e.g. dyslexia, behavioural, autistic, English as a second language and those that simply need a booster. I find teaching children with special educational needs (SEN) extremely rewarding. |
Tutoring Approach: After assessing the child's current literacy abilities I will devise an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This will outline their current skills and provide long and short term targets for the literacy tuition. I adopt a synthetic phonics approach to teaching. Emphasis is placed on letter sounds opposed to sight vocabulary. I've found that Synthetic Phonics work well for those children with SEN and beginning readers. I first teach children the letter sounds and then help them blend these sounds together to form words. This process eventually aids children to construct the pronunciation for themselves; allowing them to tackle unfamiliar words they meet in text independently. |

View Tracy's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Tracy: I am a 40 year old ethusiastic and experienced English and Media Studies tutor, who has a good track record in motivating pupils and helping them to cahieve their potential. I have ten years experience in an FE college and 5 years experience as a personal tutor - teaching all ages from 11 - 65! I tailor sessions not only to the syllabus but to the interests and needs of the pupil. |
Teaching Experience: 10 years as a tutor in Liverpool Community College, teaching English (up to 'A' Level), Media Studies (up to GCSE), Study Skills, Creative Writing, Literature Studies and Confidence Builing. 5 years as a personal tutor - working with pupils from 11-18 years old on an intensive one-to-one basis. Some time spent teaching English in a fee-paying/private secondary school in Liverpool |
Tutoring Approach: I am knowledgeable, highly motivated, enthusiastic and relentlessly cheerful. I find that a positive 'can-do' attitude usually rubs off on the pupil. I aim to demystify and make accessible literature - especially for de-motivated and unsure/unconfident pupils. I particularly focus on pupils needs and strengths - which I use as a starting point in sessions. I have had very positive feedback from both parents/carers and pupils themselves - and helped pupils move up beyond expected grades. I also genuinely like secondary school age children and teenagers. (I have two children of my own). |

| About karen: I am 37 years old, married with two children. I am currently studying towards a BA(Hons) in Early Years and Advanced Diploma in Special Needs in Education with the Open University. My studies have involved research into how children learn and how each child is different and therefore learns in different ways. Within my current setting, I have assisted with the implementation and training of the Early Years Foundation Stage which comes into force in September 2008. |
Teaching Experience: I currently work in a private nursery although in order to gain my qualifications I have worked as a teaching assistant in a combined primary/middle school. I have experience working with children aged up to 11. |
Tutoring Approach: I strongly believe that in order for children to succeed at any subject, they must be interested in it or be able to enjoy it. So many children and adults say they hate maths or english and this is often due to a negative experience in the classroom. My aim as a tutor is to restore or create a passion for the subjects in question and I approach each child according to their individual needs and ways of learning. As a parent myself I understand that each child is different and that a positive self esteem is vital for success. If a child believes he/she can do something then success is more likely. |

View Beata's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Beata: I am a 24-year-old PGDE (secondary, German, Italian) student from Dundee University. I have recently graduated at Napier University in Edinburgh from Languages and Tourism Management. I am a confident and sociable individual who likes coming across different cultures and people. Biggest passion is travelling and I do some tour guiding occasionally. I love the Mediterranean cuisine especially Italian food and a big fan of salsa. I am a keen swimmer and handball player (but non-professional). |
Teaching Experience: I used to go to a German immersion school so I have an excellent command of German and I have spent a semester in Munich, Germany. I have studied Italian since I was 17 and spent some time in the country. I have been tutoring children and student in English and German for some years. When I moved to Scotland I started offering German and Italian lessons for adults and young people. Since then I had worked with children in Berlin improving their knowledge of German. Some time ago I tutored a Spanish pupil in German in Edinburgh and most recently I have spent some month in Italy working in a private language school teaching English and German. |
Tutoring Approach: When I started tutoring some years ago I had a different approach than today. Being very sociable I thought I would have a great time while helping others getting on with the languages. Later on I became more and more reflective and realised that I unconsciously apply theories into my teaching and used methodology described in books that I have never actually read. I have always liked to see things progressing because I see it as a mean of understanding more of the world around us. Improvement is seen by me as a result of putting small pieces of a puzzle together that at the end become a whole. |

View dagmara magdalena's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About dagmara magdalena: My interest in French language dates back to my years in high school, where I excelled in French. My strong foundation in French gave me the necessary skills to test out of the beginning French courses at the University of Maria Curie-Skłodowska in Lublin. When I began my undergraduate career, I've been given the opportunity to increase my interest and knowledge in French. While studying for my bachelor's degree, I took a variety of courses that provided me with a well-rounded education. I earned my BA in French in 2007. In the end of my BA course I passed my final exam in field of literature. During my course I had the opportunity to spend some time in France. This experience allowed me to improve my French while at the same time mature as individual. I've also had the possibility to undergo the following placements: observation placement on the second year in Primary School no. 7 with integration classes and pedagogical placement on the third year in three types of school: Primary School, Gymnasium and Secondary School in Lublin. I also achieved my BA degree in Tourism at an Academy of Theology and Humanity Studies, which taught me a great deal about Middle Eastern countries, of their historical importance to many religious and the modern day conflict brought on because of this importance. Moreover, during these years I visited a number of European countries, learning about history, geography and politics. I undertook a Pre-Masters course at UCB in Birmingham, which I finished this year. One of the things that I am proud of is the voluntary translation from Polish to French which I have made for one of Polish websites. In the end of my BA degree I have wrote a dissertation which has 151 pages where I proved my curiosity. I can provide it as the pdf. document if needed. |
Teaching Experience: I've had the possibility to undergo the following placements: observation placement on the second year in Primary School no. 7 with integration classes and pedagogical placement on the third year in three types of school: Primary School, Gymnasium and Secondary School in Lublin. During my placement, I got acquainted with the organization of work in primary, gymnasium and secondary schools. I broadened my abilities in lesson planning and acquired experience in conducting classes. During the discussion with tutor I was able to analyze teacher's work and pupils' reactions. I acquired abilities to analyze my own work and its results. For each lesson I prepared a detailed synopsis approved by the tutor and I prepared teaching materials for the lessons. After each lesson I prepared commentaries to it. After each stage of the placement I prepared detailed reports which I presented for evaluation. I also have an experience in personal tutions in Poland. Moreover I had an opportunity to teach at Westminster School in West Bromwich. This work allows me to get familiar with English educational system. |
Tutoring Approach: As a teacher I hope to motivate students in ascertaining their inner strengths and abilities and discovering what truly inspires them. I aim to provide a stimulating learning environment that encourages students to trust their own opinions while fostering confidence in order for students to realize their full potential. Through my teaching experience thus far I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences they will not only retain information longer but they will also become more confident in their abilities. Being devoted to this assertion confirms that I have made the right career choice for myself. I love working with children and I'm trying to be a positive influence in their lives. I have an experience working within every Key Stage. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Christopher: I'm a postgraduate student of clinical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, with research interests in the neurological and reproductive disorders of wild animals. I am extremely patient, good natured and understanding. I am thoroughly excited by the prospect of being able to share the knowledge and ideas in the biological sciences that I have accumulated over the past decade, and am keen to maintain a role in teaching or tutoring of some description well into my professional career. |
Teaching Experience: 1. 6 months working in the United States teaching local schoolchildren (ages 7 to 18) about aquatic and marine conservation. 2. Four day study programme teaching university members about reproductive diseases and pathology in exotic mammals. 3. Numerous online tutoring programs run through both the University of Cambridge (providing application support for Veterinary Medicine and Medicine degrees), as well as online e-mentoring in Biology, Chemistry and Zoology to A' Level students. |
Tutoring Approach: A calm, measured approach, yet one which firmly corrects misconceptions, backed up by additional, multiple lines of explanation in order to bring clarity to difficult concepts. I recognise the importance of long-term goals, as well as short ones, and adjust my teaching approach and the level of delivery accordingly until a student is entirely comfortable with the key concepts. I believe the grasping of over-riding principles to be far more important than mindlessly memorising facts, and that such facts hang better from a more solid framework. Regular multichoice, short answer and extended answer question papers form an integral part of my delivery, but the precise context of these is obviously dependent on the nature of the subject and qualification being studied. |

| About jiashuo: Final year Student in Imperial College London, Department of Mechanical Engineering Expected Graduated with Second upper Class Honours from Imperial College in August 2008 |
Teaching Experience: As an Volunteering Teacher in Guan College, I successfully taught Physics, Mathematics, and History at equally GCSE level and GCE A level. Also, I had held the position of Head of tutors during the volunteering period. These experiences allowed me to develop and refine my communication, training as well as organization skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I am always engaging my tutees in a personal level, and tring to teach the way of learning knowledge. People learn most effectively when they are motivated and hence I hope to inspire every tutee that I take on to be responsible learners. That way they will benefit most in the long term. |
