About Amy:
I am a recent graduate with a 2.1 in English Literature from Cambridge University. I have always had a passion for reading and writing and this has translated into an enthusiasm for arts subjects at A-Level and Degree Level. My love of music inspired me to study trumpet, piano and singing from a young age and I am currently pursuing my singing professionally. I am also very interested in Classical history and languages and believe in the importance of learning modern languages, as a means of increasing personal freedom and cultural awareness. I am an out-going person with a good sense of humour, an interest in world-affairs and a weakness for jazz.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many pupils of varying ages and abilities. I currently tutor pupils ranging from six-year-olds embarking on verbal and non-verbal reasoning, 13 year olds preparing for common entrance, AS students struggling with exam preparation right through to degree level English students. I greatly enjoy teaching such a wide variety of people, encouraging all of them to approach their subjects with confidence and enthusiasm.

It is important to provide all of the students with structure and consistency, whilst keeping the lessons active and interesting. For example, I have recently tutored a primary age girl in literacy skills. This involved using phonetics and interactive methods, such as songs and games, to encourage her to be enthusiastic about reading and writing. Structure and regularity in our lessons improved her confidence quickly and her ability increased dramatically with the use of a well-organised and fun phonetics course. Towards the end of my teaching her, she got into a new school, where she was provided with excellent phonetics tuition to continue her studies. Similarly, with one of my 13+ pupils, frequent assessment of his progress using test papers and consistent encouragement of his creativity with projects and presentations gave him a varied, but nevertheless structured, approach which helped him to go into the exams feeling deservedly assured about his own ability.

I come from a family of four siblings, two of whom now have young children. I am used to babysitting and caring for three children under 6 at a time and therefore have good experience of interacting with primary age pupils. I am widely experienced in working with young people of many ages and am aware of the structure, personal attention and encouragement that teaching requires.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to pass on the enthusiasm I have for this subject and my other main academic interests to tutees of all ages. I recognise the pressures involved in preparing for academic examinations at various levels and believe in the great benefits of one-to-one teaching in swiftly developing the tutee's understanding, confidence and individual ability. At the same time, I want to encourage the tutee to enjoy pursuing the subject for its own sake and to savour the opportunity to explore it in greater depth. Whether a tutee is looking to sharpen up his/her knowledge for an exam or just to take pleasure in what the subject has to offer, I am happy to help.

In terms of my approach to the tutorials themselves, I will work initially to assess the student's specific academic needs and then aim to provide a personalised structure of sessions which will hope to cover areas of anxiety or particular interest.

About Naomi:
I am currently studying for a masters degree in chiropractic which requires a high level of scientific knowledge. I have tutored in the past and have a full CRB check as this is required for the medical course I am currently doing.

About Mark:
I am 33 years old and a Qualified Primary Teacher. I currently run my own business (SportStart) providing sports coaching for after-school clubs in primary schools across Surrey. I also provide PPA cover in schools during term-time, run school holiday sports academies and deliver exciting children's birthday parties! Although I am very keen on sport, my real passion is working with children, which led me to becoming a primary teacher. Whilst I have great fun teaching sport to children, I do miss the day-to-day teaching in the classroom environment, where life is never dull!

Teaching Experience:

I hold a Primary PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) which enables me to teach children in the 4-11 age range. I spent 2 years teaching at Brookwood Primary School in Brookwood, Surrey, with Year 5 and Year 6 children. I subsequently set up my sports coaching business however during that period I continued to teach, covering PPA time at Windlesham Village Infant School, Windlesham, Surrey, where I taught children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. I currently teach Year 2 children at the Mead Infant School in Ewell, Surrey, where I am employed to cover PPA time as a sports coach.

Tutoring Approach:

I take great pride and satisfaction from helping a child to achieve their full potential. Being able to develop a child's confidence, knowledge and skills is such a rewarding experience - this is what attracted me to teaching! I believe that I am friendly and relaxed but always professional in everything I do. I like to be innovative and find interesting and stimulating ways of helping children to learn and express themselves. With Maths tuition in particular I try to combine practical, often sports-related activities with the teaching of methods to engage a child's attention and focus them on a specific area of learning. I am also fairly flexible in the hours I can work and will go that extra bit further than your 'average' tutor!

About Labelle:
I am a maths teacher at a Saturday Schoo. l also tutor during the week both on a 1-2-1 basis as well as at an after school Maths & English club.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching, training and tutoring experience spans over 14 years. I tutor on a 1-2-1 basis as well as children in a group.

Tutoring Approach:

I 'customise' all my lessons to suit each students individual needs. In my experience there is no 'set' approach to teaching. This is for 2 main reasons:

1) each childs learning ability is different so I always do a 'pre-assessment' with each student to assess where they are, what they like and don't like and work out with them the best approach to getting their grades up (as well as enjoy it as they go along!).

2) Sometimes a student just needs assistance with homework or a difficult concept and not necessarily an actual lesson on a particular topic (as you tend to find in schools!)

About Christopher:
I am a physics with science teacher. Being a modern teacher I enjoy employing new learning strategies, interacting with students and fellow teachers as well as seeing positive results.

Teaching Experience:

Currently teaching at an Aberdeenshire academy school, I teach general science to standard grade level and physics to higher grade level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring depends on the tutee. May it be brushing up on exam type questions, filling in gaps in knowledge or starting from scratch, I have the knowledge and skills to make employing a tutor worthwhile. It is my belief that both the tutor and tutee have a responsibility to obtain maximum results from tutoring sessions. This can be achieved by having a definite structure to tutoring sessions and by being open about what steps need to be taken to improve results.

About Ben:
I am 23 years old and have recently finished a degree in Primary Education. I have a diverse range of interests from computing to both playing and watching rugby.

Teaching Experience:

I have completed a 4 year teching degree at Manchester Metropolitan University which qualifies me to teach all subjects at Primary School level. I currenly work in a small rural school teaching years 5 and 6. Prior to my degree I spent several months in Malaysia teaching English as a foreign language to Primary aged children.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a fairly relaxed attitude to tutoring as I find that children respond better when they feel more relaxed. For me tutoring should not feel like an extension of school in terms of structure and academic pressure (at least not at primary level), rather the children should be introduced to teching methods that are more fun and relaxed but impracticle within a school setting due to larger numbers of children.

About Cas:
I'm a enthusiastic and friendly Masters student, who loves reading, discussing and sharing knowledge with others.

Teaching Experience:

I have varied tutoring experience, working with 11-year-olds to adult beginners. I have also taught abroad, working in Paris in a secondary school with pupils aged 18-23. I have been tutoring for several years now, and love working on a one-to-one basis.

Tutoring Approach:

I combine a thorough knowledge of my subject and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with others. Classes should be challenging, but not demoralising! I will try and keep you on your toes, but in a relaxed and non-pressurised environment. About Gabriela:
The principle I most firmly believe is that anyone can learn if they are given the information in the right way. As a writer and teacher, my goal is about understanding the way people work and how to get through to them. Communication is everything, both on the page and in the street, but one must be accessible first and foremost and this is something I strive to achieve at all times. I am where I am today because of my teachers, I appreciate what made me passionate about the things that I learnt, how I was encouraged to approach my dreams without fear, and I want simply to continue to spread this philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach a workshop for Creative Writing MA students at several Universities, including Oxford, Birkbeck and Royal Holloway. This is something I have designed and sold myself, based on my experiences and learning processes. Some of my work simply focuses on building confidence, as this can be the main obstacle to success. In the past I have worked as a private tutor in various capacities in the UK and Australia. I have also spent two years in Mexico instructing English and Creative Writing on a more informal level - but just as crucial in terms of result. I have also worked with young teens as a drugs and alcohol educator, which has possibly been the most challenging of tasks - trying to find a way to relate to youngsters in a language that will inform but not patronise.

Tutoring Approach:

Energy is so important in a learning atmosphere and I don't expect what I can't bring myself. I use analogy to help my students visualise what it is they are trying to learn as it is hard to understand what we cannot relate to. My natural love of learning and the subjects I teach, guides me in many ways. But the main thing is the creation of a safe and sympathetic environment. I believe in every one of my students so that they can believe in themselves.

About Sophia:
Currently writing up a PhD in Molecular Biology, possess a 2.1 honours degree in Genetics.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught small groups of medical students as well as one-to one teaching at pre- GCSE and GCSE level. I used to run a Saturday Performing Arts School in East London with 40 students and five teachers. I am keen to gain further experience in teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

The onus is on the student to gain the confidence in the subject they have problems with. I believe that once this confidence has been gained the student can be guided and problems can be solved using logical thinking.
At higher levels (post-GCSE) I like to ask questions and explain the background to the problem so that the student may be able to provide answers to the queries for themselves.

About Lauren:
I am very patient and good with people of all ages. I achieved very high grades in my GCSEs (4A*s and 6As) and A Levels (3As and a B). I live opposite Manchester Grammar School, which would be very useful if I were to tutor somebody from this school, as travel for the pupil would be very easy.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring and mentoring troubled and struggling children aged between 13-17 at an underprivileged school in Slough, helping them not only with their school subjects, but with decisions about their futures such as subjects to take and just generally keeping them out of trouble.

Tutoring Approach:

I consult with the parents beforehand to see how they would prefer I went about tutoring their child, but generally I like to build up a rapour with the child so that they feel what I am teaching or helping them with applies to them and so that they feel comfortable and willing to learn from me. I am young which helps with this, as the pupils do not feel as though they are being tutored by someone who does not or cannot understand them. I am kind and patient but also firm and disciplined. After finding out the topics needed to be covered, I assign parts of these, or the topics as a whole to a session and go through it so that it is easy to understand, before working through examples with the student and then overseeing and helping them to work through them by theirselves until they feel comfortable with the content.
