Alan - Newry tutor
Information About Alan:
Personal Description:
I'm Alan and I graduated from the University of Oxford with a Masters in Mathematical & Computational Finance and from Imperial College London with a Bachelors in Mathematics with Statistics for Finance.
I've taken a range of GCSE and A-Level subjects and was one of the top UK Art and Mathematics candidates sitting the exams.
I also enjoy writing, learning new languages and cultures and generally exploring new ideas. I'm a pretty laid back person and I generally try to make learning an enjoyable experience rather than a chore, which is reflected by my style of teaching.
Teaching Experience:
I have had many informal teaching experiences, tutoring my brother, sister, friends and classmates in various subjects. I was also part of several university societies, mentoring students across London and part of the Mathematics help group where I taught students university level Mathematics.
I participated in the Students Associate Scheme where I was the Team Leader of the Kingsbury High School placement. I taught Mathematics in levels ranging from KS3 to A-Level and took the Cambridge STEP classes.
I taught English to primary school students in Hong Kong for a month in Fresh Fish Traders Primary School as part of the AccessHK Summer Programme.
After my travels to China, I kept in contact with a few friends there where I learn mandarin in exchange for teaching English.
Tutoring Approach:
My main approach to learning is efficiency, and I find that this is most easily accomplished if understanding and enjoyment are part of the learning process.
There are different ways to tackle any given course and I have experimented with various teaching methods successfully for a range of subjects. For example, for subjects like History which relies heavily on memory, memory techniques should be employed as opposed to memorising though repetition, hence kinaesthetic methods of learning should be utilised. For subjects like Mathematics, understanding and logic are the most important skills so it is critical that these ideas are grasped before advancing to the next topic.
