It was an easy decision for me to study a Maths and Statistics degree at the University of London, obtaining a First Class Honours, and I so loved my subject that I continued on to do a PhD in Mathematical Statistics, combining both theoretical maths with application. I tend to use a variety of methods when teaching, depending on the child and their needs, focusing on their age and what their syllabus requires. I am capable to do quick summarised revision sessions, as well as long term lesson plans. Either way I ensure that the student is always given homework and stays revising. If appropriate I also do small mastery tests at the start of each lesson which consists of a five minute recap test, so the student is required to have revised the previous lesson well. Obviously if they struggle with the homework or mastery test, then the lesson plan's pace is adjusted to meet the child's level. I make a conscious effort to ensure I am not just catering for visual learners like myself, but try to see lessons through other learners' eyes. For example, to introduce pictograms to numeracy entry level class, I got the learners to create 'human pictograms' arranged by name length, pets, eye colour, etc. and then transferred that information as pictograms to the board. Kinaesthetic learners were thereby catered for in the physical movement and manipulation, visual learners in the pictograms created on the board and audio learners as we discussed and interpreted the graphs.

I have in particular come to understand the value of sharing learning objectives and success criteria with students. Knowing exactly what is expected and how they can achieve allow learners to focus more clearly on tasks.

I feel it is important to make learning interesting and creative, and one way to achieve this is using real life example; this allows learners to explore and understand situations and express feelings, thoughts and emotions. An example of how I have successfully used real life situation was with a GCSE class, working out the area of the classroom to decide the correct amount of carpet needed for the classroom. I gave the students measuring tape to measure the length and width of the classroom. They were incredibly enthusiastic and threw themselves into the task. I won two editions of the Concorso Cameristico C.A.Seghizzi in Gorizia: in 2005 in the Sacred Music category, and in 2007 in Chamber Singing category (in duo with Alessandro Sica, with whom I attended a masterclass with soprano Catherine Dubosc).

I currently teach KS3 and KS4 Science in a high school in Wales and tutor Maths and Science privately. I am passionate about inspiring learners, helping them overcome barriers, and enabling them to reach their full potential.

Student studying new GCSE syllabus achieved the highest grade possible, Level 9.

11+ student secured scholarship for London School for Boys and Merchant Taylor School.

I am a qualified, experienced teacher with a passion for supporting people to fulfill their potential. I am originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne but have recently relocated to West Yorkshire. When I am not teaching I enjoy yoga and nature walks.

Teaching Experience:
I have 6 years of experience in primary education. I have worked across both key stages, with three years of my experience in Key Stage 2 and three years in Key Stage 1. I am currently a leader of phonics and have expertise in the teaching of reading. I also have a lot of experience supporting children in the key areas of maths and writing and have a wide range of resources available for these subjects.

I really enjoy building a rapport with my students to ensure they feel comfortable and secure. I always take the time to find out a student's current level of ability and confidence and then tailor my approach to suit this. I like to use a wide range of interactive resources. Rather than simply relying on worksheets I aim to include games, media, objects and speaking and listening activities in sessions to create variety and keep them stimulating. I live in Epsom and am married with four children; one is studying mathematics at Oxford, another is studying for an MA in English Literature at Surrey, another graduated from Reading with a degree in economics. My interests include cycling, and have organised rides for school children over several years. I enjoy walking my dogs.

I am Head of Mathematics at an independent preparatory school, having previously taught GCSE and A-Level mathematics in secondary schools since 2003 and have extensive experience of tutoring. I have taught in both independent and state sectors up to 11+, Common Entrance at 13+, GCSE and A-Level.
