My name is Lauren, I am 18 years old, and I am currently a student at Coventry University studying Spanish BA Single Honours, with TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language). I am originally from Dorset, where I studied Spanish at GCSE and A Level, acquiring an A* at GCSE and a B at A Level. I believe I am a hard working individual with every intention on making sure I achieve what I set out to do. In the past I have helped out with some younger classes at my secondary school when they needed some assistance in some of the classes. Also, as my sister is 5 years younger than me, I have always been the one helping her with homework, or helping if there is something she does not understand. I think that there is a lot of importance in learning 'discovery' which is where the pupil is not spoon-fed information, but rather encouraged to try and work out patterns in the language e.g. grammar. I also think grammar is an important part of learning Spanish language due to all of the verb conjugations and gender agreements etc. Homework is also important as doing a little each day is definitely one of the best ways to learn.

My language learning journey started in the same way it does for most of us - at secondary school. I fell in love with the French language at an early age and went on to complete an honours degree in French Studies at the University of Birmingham. During my year abroad, I lived and studied in Montréal, where I took classes in French, Italian and Spanish at McGill University and also fell in love with the Spanish language and culture.

The other very important aspect for me is making sure that the level of proficiency is correctly assessed. If the classes are too challenging or too basic, a negative environment not conducive to learning is created. Even if proper evaluation is made before the groups are formed, there will always be differences inside the classroom. I, as a teacher, try to be as aware as possible of this factor and strive to use that for the good of the group. Pairing a strong student with someone not as strong usually helps. Another important issue that I try to be as aware as possible is preventing the strong students from taking over the exercises and leaving behind other students that, because of either lack of confidence or not being at the same level, stop themselves from actively participating in class. Learning a foreign language is a process that implies some mimicking, language awareness, practice on comprehension, expression and also creativity. I am a former secondary school teacher who thoroughly enjoys tutoring both French and Spanish to a wide range of ages and abilities, from beginner right through to GCSE. My belief is that languages are for everyone. I am also a mum to three children so I understand that flexibility is important is important to my tutees and their parents.

I am qualified to degree level and also hold a PGCE qualification and QTS. I worked as a secondary school teacher until December 2017 and since then I have worked as a private tutor of languages, both in person and online.

As a Languages tutor, I understand the pressures students face as they approach their GCSE examinations and I like to think of my approach as committed to helping my students to achieve whilst also being mindful of their other study commitments.

At GCSE level, I am fully committed to helping my students to achieve their full potential and will tutor them in each of the four skill areas of writing, speaking, reading and listening. I enjoy working one to one with students, helping them to build their confidence in the French language.

I think it is of particular importance with the new French GCSE specification to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses in terms of the four skill areas and to build on and develop those areas at every session.

As a tutor, I try to be flexible in my approach to adapt to my students' needs. Most of the time I try to be as clear as possible in the explanation of the grammar so it serves a purpose communicatively. Therefore, I put an emphasis on grammar and communicative practice, both related to one another.
