Personal Description:

Hello, I'm Freya - I am a passionate and dedicated Modern Foreign Languages teacher with a PGCE (Distinction) in Spanish and French from the University of Oxford and an MA in Italian and Spanish from the University of St Andrews.

I have experience of learning multiple languages, which include Spanish, Italian, French, Mandarin Welsh, German and Cantonese - therefore I have acquired the necessary skills, techniques and methods required to learn and revise for a Modern Foreign Language and hope to pass this onto students.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching background spans state secondary classrooms, private 1-to-1 tutoring, and international education across the UK, Europe, and Asia. Currently working as a Secondary MFL Teacher, I have extensive experience designing and delivering Spanish lessons from KS3 through KS5 and French at KS3. My experience includes leading A-Level literature modules (such as Como agua para chocolate), preparing Hong Kong students for IELTS exams with the British Council in Hong Kong, teaching English in Italian classrooms, and running both online and in person 1-on-1 Spanish tutoring for learners. From primary-age language clubs and au pair teaching in Madrid to guiding senior students through complex exam papers, this diverse background allows me to adapt effortlessly to any age group, skill level, or learning goal.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is highly personalised to each student's strengths, needs and learning type.

Language goes beyond just memorising vocabulary; it's about building confidence, demystifying grammar, and turning knowledge into natural communication. I break down complex linguistic concepts into manageable, engaging steps tailored to a specific learning style. Whether a student is aiming for top grades in their GCSEs/A-Levels, or simply want to build conversational fluency, I aim create a supportive, motivating environment designed to drive measurable progress.

For KS3 students, I use sentence builders as a baseline for word order, giving students a clear scaffold to construct their own sentences. By combining this with targeted questioning and active Assessment for Learning (AfL) such as mini-whiteboards with conjugations and translations, I ensure I can continuously check for understanding, address misconceptions in real time, and stretch every student at their own pace.

At GCSE and A-Level, I am most familiar with the AQA specifications. At KS4 the goal is moving students from scaffolded language to accurate output across the four core skills. I have made a set of online flashcards for every GCSE module for students to learn as homework. I create model answers for the writing exams, and decode it with the students according to the mark scheme so that students see exactly what earns top marks.

At KS5, I put focus on language becoming a tool to analyse societal issues, culture, literature and film. I have created an in-depth study guide for Como agua para chocolate with a strict step-by-step approach to tackling a high-levelled critical analysis essay. I have been the A-Level speaking examiner for Spanish students in my school, so I am knowledgeable on the mark scheme and requirements for high grades.

I am very patient and genuinely want the best for each of my students, whilst sharing my passion and love of languages.
