I am a retired university lecturer in Mechanical Engineering with a PhD from City University of London and a BEng from a leading Chinese university. I also worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. My entire career has been dedicated to academic research and higher education, and I have worked as a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at a university in London for 23 years. Tutoring Approach:
During the last three decades I have worked with numerous students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. Depending on the amount of time available, I usually help students cement their mastery of the foundations of arithmetic and algebra before moving on to establish fluency in statistics, geometry and problem solving.

When did you start tutoring?
I have started tutoring one of my classmates while I was still in secondary school. It was a rewarding experience and it is quite interesting to go back to those times and compare how much has changed over the years in my lessons.

Why do you tutor?
I was always passionate about explaining Maths and Science to my peers back in school but I could have never imagined that it would become such a core part of my life. Tutoring is not just a source of income for me, it's something that makes me feel valuable in society, it allows helping so many amazing students around the UK to proceed in their future studies and careers. And it was never just theory and exams that we cover during our lessons, my tutoring sessions inevitably involve critical thinking and applying the knowledge in real life, thus I can contribute to students' lives even more.

What is your biggest tutoring success story?
Creating my own professional database of exam-type questions (the aforementioned startup) proved to be a success in my tutoring career since it allowed to spend more time and energy on creating quality resources for students and reuse them during different lessons. It was hard to see the value of the questions initially, but I have noticed that some students started to appreciate them so much that they no longer want to use a textbook during our lessons and I can focus more on their solutions rather than creating questions on the spot. Fast forward two years, 97% of my lessons are delivered using this system!

What is your biggest tutoring failure?
I could not distinguish a particular biggest failure while tutoring but there have been several cases when I was able to assess my tutoring, communication, preparation for lessons and enhance them accordingly. Such cases are responsible for the current structure of my lessons, communication with students and their parents, software and hardware that I use for tutoring and messaging. It really seems that every new challenge creates an opportunity for my services to be improved.

What are the students you love and hate to teach?
To be honest, I have not had any students that I hated to teach, they all are just different. With some pupils we have to thoroughly go through every concept in a topic and revise them later to build the knowledge up. However, that is not always the case with students who are already successful and aim for excellence. They usually solve provided questions quite quickly and I am just left checking answers and correcting silly mistakes. Therefore, I love tutoring every student, regardless of their skills and knowledge.

Who are you as a person?
I love reading books, I try to live a healthy life and be a responsible consumer. For 10 years I was a professional performer of dancesport, I was a swimmer with fins, a solo singer and participant in various science olympiads. I like reading articles, listening to talks and podcasts about how science and technology can be applied in both our lives and solving environmental problems.

What's your teaching style?
Students might decide by themselves how they want to learn during tutoring sessions, but otherwise, I always personalise my lessons according to their level and aims. There is always an option to go through a past paper or questions that a student did not understand at school or we can cover some topics fully by using a textbook. However, if they just want to revise a broader part of a subject or to cover something that they have missed at school, we can solve thousands of exam-like questions that I have got covered.

In my tutoring sessions with students we go through the topics where they struggle, solve past exam papers, I remind them the theory of the subject, and help completing homework questions, if required. I tend to explain the basic principles firstly, later I am developing students' s ability to solve problems by themselves starting from easy questions and building knowledge to thinking required solutions.

I am a highly experienced and fully qualified secondary teacher, with over 18 years experience in teaching, and tutoring, within school and online. Teaching Experience:
I am a fully qualified secondary school teacher specialising in Science and Maths. I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience, in schools and online, in both mainstream teaching and special educational needs teaching. I have successfully taught and tutored pupils for 11 plus and 13 plus entrance exams, as well as for GCSE's in both Maths and all three Sciences, as well as Combined Science, and for A level Biology and Chemistry.

I have a detailed knowledge of all current syllabus for GCSE Sciences, Maths, (as well as Maths and Science IGCSE, Functional Skills, and BTEC), and all current A level Chemistry and Biology syllabus's. I use a combination of theory, exam practice questions, past paper questions, and workbooks in the lessons, to improve pupil confidence with exam technique, and focus on exam skills.

In addition, I adapt my teaching methods to support the pupils learning needs and help to identify areas of study in which they need help to improve. I also look at revision methods and planning revision timetables with pupils to help them find the option which works best for their learning needs.

Personal Description:
In the years 1998-2005 I worked in the IT industry. My responsibilities mainly covered administrating Operating Systems and troubleshooting computer networks in small to medium businesses. I spent most of my time working with customers troubleshooting problems. I found I had a natural talent in communicating with people in a respectful and considerate manner. It also led me to improve my customer service skills which I continue to find useful as a teacher at City College Plymouth.
I have been studying a Computer Networks degree (graduated 2014) and MSc Network Systems Engineering (finishing in March 2018) at Plymouth University.
I am enthusiastic and well-organized with sterling interpersonal and communication skills.

Teaching Experience:
For the last four years I have been teaching IT, Maths and Engineering at the college, delivering lessons for levels 3-5. Alongside teaching I have achieved my certificate in Award in Education and Teaching and currently I am undertaking level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

Tutoring Approach:
I am very happy and proud delivering my knowledge and demonstrating my skills to others. However, I plan my lessons taking care to follow best practice and deliver using active learning strategies and differentiate effectively through a variety of means. I am a diligent and hard-working student who enjoys bringing new facts and contents into the minds of other people and adore helping, developing someone else's potential by sharing mine. As I am full of wonder, I relish taking an adventure within the study of almost any field and I aim to spread this positivity and my knowledge through teaching and mentoring students in an innovative way. I serve friendly behaviour and bring upon an optimistic attitude to any task, am very responsible and organisational, manipulate skills developed from hobbies, am self-disciplined and persevered to reach any goal, am punctual and balance between work and leisure. I get along well with a wide range of age groups from my social activities, tutoring experiences and my position as the second eldest in my family, I have spent a long time taking care of my younger siblings. I have been remarked as organised, polite, altruistic and supportive when I aid others from any perspective.

As I love helping others in struggle and to support others to reach higher goals, I have taught various age groups, held responsibility as a School Ambassador and School tutoring, volunteered to be a Reader Leader who helps those who struggle reading and understanding the story with success. I have conducted my past tutor sessions based on creativity of my hobbies such as art, which always worked absolutely well. I tutored very young children outside school who lacked motivation, in Sciences and Mathematics since when I was a GCSE student. I have many experiences working with children, especially with spending my work experience as an assistant in a primary school class, I was able to deal with various situations to keep the children calm, focused and motivated. In these instances, I aimed to ensure that they understood all aspects of the content, therefore, embedding simple terminologies and associating similar example situations for comparison to ease the hard contents. Nonetheless, I was very tolerant of any issue during the online teaching and was strongly resilient for full engagement.

I volunteered as a tutor for students aged 8 and 12, I was responsible and was relied upon to plan the meetings via emails where they suited their best learning time in advance. I utilised my organisational skills to collect resources and investigated various methods of teaching to find the most efficient way to deliver difficult contents. Hence, especially for biology, I altered the way I presented the resources so they suited the students' own learning attitude appropriately. I evolved my communication competency whilst discovering the students' difficulty and preferred revision methods, also.

As a school tutor during my A-Level studies, I have tutored GCSE students for Mathematics. I applied my patience to introduce difficult ideas carefully. In the cases for tutoring mechanics, my tutee found it difficult to identify and link various components of the forces together and to grasp the content clearly. Thus, I investigated the source of this lack of understanding then gave a clear explanation and support. Afterwards, I managed to explain various application questions using the struggling contents and interacting with my tutee (ie. asking what the next step would be) as I went through the questions to expand his understanding. I shared my method of working out the questions logically and giving clear guidance helped him greatly, hence, I was able to see improvement in his speed of understanding and solving of the questionnaires, showing a transition in his grades in Mathematics.

My mentoring sessions are carried out in innovative ways to ensure all aspects of the content is understood (ex: embedding simple terminologies and associating everyday situations for comparison to ease the hard contents), are full of collated useful resources and present them in the most appropriate way for individual's own learning styles, are delivered with tolerance and patience at all times. My teaching methodology becomes flexible to appropriately suit the individual's learning styles to efficiently carry this tutoring session forward. However, my basic format of teaching is always going through the struggling content to make sure the understanding of it becomes clear then is based on questionnaires in-between going through the content or (application) questions to check upon the students' understanding then involves various interactive activities (ex: quiz, mix-match, ...) to engage the learning. I always work towards finding the best route for my mentees. Through my tutor sessions, my tutees always develop their confidence, self-esteem and their competencies.
