We have about 50 students in each of years 12 and 13. 26 of our Physics students gained grade As at AS Level in 2006. 48% A and A* at A2 Level in June 2011. This is twice the Welsh average which puts us at the top of tree. 67% A*,A or B in 2012 in my class.Three of my students have won the Institute of Physics prize for the highest A Level marks in Wales with several gaining 600/600. Tutoring Approach:
It is easy to overcomplicate things.

- Anyone can learn anything. It's a matter of method, support, application, and belief.
- Students learn new material at first by seeing a need to learn the new thing (e.g. because they don't know how to solve a new problem), and connecting new information to things they already know.
- They then need to strengthen this understanding by engaging in problems themselves and trying to remember what they have learned.
- Many students need to gain confidence. This partly comes from encouragement, but true confidence comes from progress and success, which comes from following the above.
- Students need guidance. It's challenging enough to try to focus on the material. Teachers need to make sure that all of students' focus is placed on thinking about the content, rather than on sideline issues like trying to figure out what comes next.
- Efficiency is important. Most people have specific targets (e.g. passing an exam). Things need to happen quickly.
- At the same time, early stages sometimes need to take longer in order to build a foundation for what follows. Taking a step back can be important in order to be clear on what's really going on, and avoiding rote memorisation or "going through the motions".

I am a retired university lecturer in Mechanical Engineering with a PhD from City University of London and a BEng from a leading Chinese university. I also worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. I begin with an initial assessment to identify each student's strengths and areas for development. From there, every session is tailored to the student's specific needs-whether that means consolidating tricky classroom topics, preparing for an upcoming mock exam, or developing a long-term revision strategy for final A-levels.

Achieving a strong exam grade requires not only a solid grasp of mathematical concepts but, more importantly, strong problem-solving skills. In my sessions, I regularly use past paper questions, emphasising a logical, well-structured approach that makes workings clear and easy to follow. I also help students build their numerical fluency by introducing carefully selected mental maths questions as daily practice (set as homework). Finally, I provide constructive, specific feedback to help students learn from their mistakes and refine the exam techniques needed to reach the top grades.
