I am Ian, a friendly and enthusiastic mathematician, a former teacher of maths and physics A Levels while living on the south coast of England, now relocated to Glasgow. I believe that there is much beauty to be found in mathematics and science and try to convey this appreciation alongside the technical skills required to get you through your exams. These subjects don't have to be the impenetrable list of technicalities they are often portrayed as!

I offer tutoring for Mathematics (A Level, Higher, Advanced Higher and IB Diploma), Further Mathematics (A Level) and Physics (A Level, Higher and IB Diploma).

I have a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics and its Applications from the University of Sussex. When friends asked me how I managed to get a first in my degree, I'm afraid I could only offer a traditional answer - hard work, and a fair amount of it. Maths is one of the hardest subjects to bluff your way through, and although it's possible to scrape by with a passing acquaintance of the concepts involved, you will never do particularly well without a deeper understanding of the subject. However, this shouldn't be taken as a cause for despair - far from it! With a proper understanding of the subject, a real empathy with the "why" rather than the "how", mathematics not only becomes far more interesting but also easier. I always aim to help students see the bigger picture and how the disparate parts of your course syllabus fit together.

Teaching Experience:
I have several years of recent experience of teaching A level Maths, Further Maths and Physics at a school in the south of England. While living in England, I have tutored students from across Brighton and Hove (and occasionally beyond), and have a good understanding of the common barriers to success that students encounter and how to help overcome them.

Tutoring Approach:
Everyone's tutoring needs are different. To make sure that I can offer you the help that you need, I usually start by arranging a visit to you at your home. For students living with parents or carers, this is an ideal chance to meet with everyone and make sure that we are all happy with the arrangements we come to. The topics we can discuss include general points (why are you considering tutoring? What would you like to get out of the experience?) and more practical issues (are you studying Highers/Advanced Highers, A Levels or taking the IB Diploma? Which exam board are you studying? I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. By virtue of having studied several subjects at a high level, I empathise with the feeling of finding something difficult, and have the patience and technique to get past this. During the last three decades I have worked with numerous students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. Engineering is one of the hardest subjects you can study, and it doesn't help when module content is disorganised, learning materials are messy and hard to follow, and when lecturers are too busy to respond to your questions. My overall aim is to teach you to become an independent learner, to teach you how to learn, so that you can learn regardless of the support from your university, and so you can continue learning when you leave university into whatever career path you take.

I believe that the subjects that I am looking to tutor are genuinely enjoyable if they are presented in the proper way and students are able to explore where their curiosity takes them. Which provides enjoyment and a great sense of achievement
For older students, however, I do not want to undermine the importance of being properly prepared for public examinations. The beauty of maths and physics is that the amount of rote learning is much less than other subjects and practice problem solving and understanding concepts is the key to success, this provides much more engaging revision. Although if you are struggling with teaching yourself a new topic or just didn't find that you 'got it' in class, it can be incredibly demoralising. This is where a second explanation or some targeted understanding can help out. moreover, with regular meetings, we can increase the efficiency of your study and I can teach you some tips on self-assessment and identifying in what manner you can help yourself, which is a vital skill the higher up the educational ladder you climb.

For younger students, my approach is to build a strong foundation of the basic skills whilst exploring more intricate concepts in a guided but ambitious manner. I believe that many students are capable of going far beyond the scope of their syllabuses, with the right guidance and encouragement.

I have a Physics degree from Cambridge and still maintain an active and deep interest in the subject. Among my hobbies is close harmony singing - I run a mixed local singing group and have travelled widely in pursuit of musical excellence. I also appreciate the countryside and am happy to live, and walk, in a beautiful part of our country.

Teaching Experience:
My introduction to tutoring came through successfully helping my sons through their A-levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. The experience inspired me to look into tutoring as an alternative occupation, and, for the last couple of years, I have been pleased to take on other students. I now work part-time in software development but love teaching and find tutoring very rewarding. Generally, most of my students are working their way through their A-levels but I can also help out up to University level, either with preparation for entrance exams (e.g PAT, NSAA, STEP), or with some of the topics encountered in Maths / Physics / Engineering courses. I also do occasional work at GCSE level in these subjects.

Tutoring Approach:
I like to treat students as individuals with differing needs. For some the key is to develop a solid understanding - subject knowledge tends to build on itself, and those who miss basic points in class can often find themselves slipping behind, feeling lost and not able to cope. For others, it involves digging deeper into the subject to perhaps make connections that weren`t at first apparent.

At all levels, I have found that guided questioning and encouraging students to think through their own difficulties is very effective. It is very pleasing to see the spark of light when an idea hits home. And once the basics are established, of course, the key to success is practice, and the development of exam technique.

I was graduated from The University of Hong Kong, major in Mathematics. As a person enthusiastic in Mathematics, I am familiar to analyze the problem and find out the solution logically. Teaching Experience:
I have more than 10 years one-to-one tutorial and 6 years group tutorial experience in maths. Mainly teach the students in the age between 12 to 17. The teaching content include explain the concept, consolidate the formula and skill by massive practice and train the examination skills. Although I taught maths in Hong Kong syllabus mainly before, I also have taught some students in GCSE. Therefore I also understand the syllabus in GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:
In my teaching experience, I think the most important point is let the student understand the concept so that they know what they are do, rather than just remember the formula and methods. Therefore in my lesson, students can expect they would touch much of different types of question to challenge their thinking. I think such critical thinking type of teaching method is the most appropriate to the teenage group of students. Of course I would also provide the exercise for their consolidation, teach how to use the calculator, exam skill, etc. to help the students to get a good result in their examinations.
