I am a graduate in Physics with Astrophysics, which was a four year degree, which included me living and learning in Italy. I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

In school I designed and constructed a solar-powered light of adjustable brightness. Patterns appeal to me. When I am not involved in science, I do Scottish Country Dancing, as well as many other genres of folk dancing with intricate symmetrical dance figures. My study of several languages, including Latin and German, allows me to identify parts of scientific terms that I can use to help my students understand them - for instance a recently discovered non-repeating tile is named Einstein not after the physicist but because only one ('ein') type of tile or stone ('stein') is needed to make the pattern. I find Richard Feynman inspiring. He himself got into science through tinkering and discussions with his father about how things worked. He spoke on beauty in nature, and that scientific understanding only enhances its appreciation - as well as seeing the beauty of a flower, a scientist can also wonder at its smaller structure, and how it developed to attract insects to pollinate it. What does this tell us about how bees see the world?

Teaching Experience:
I have three years' experience conducting tutorials in Materials Science at Cambridge University, having myself studied Natural Sciences there, including Physics and Chemistry. In addition to the course material provided by the university and my own worked solutions to the problems, I used physical models in the teaching that I had made myself.

In 2018, I taught the Maths and Physics component of the NCC International Foundation Programme for Engineers (of around GCSE/A-level level) at the Star Exeter language school.

Since 2018 I have tutored science and maths independently and for local authorities.One of my pupils has been with me since 2018 - starting with GCSE Physics, and progressing through A Level Biology to finance for adult life. I regularly tutor Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology from KS3 up to A Level. I have also had students in other systems e.g. IB and AP. I have also assisted students with Psychology, Environmental Management and Marine Science. I enjoy showing you real-world applications of what we are studying. In out lessons, we will draw diagrams and break problems down into bite-size steps. I encourage my students to think of real-life examples of the material and to ask themselves helpful questions such as "What do I already know?", "Is this a sensible answer?" (e.g. compared to the size of household objects or the speed of a walker or car) and "Did I expect those units?".

Hi! I'm David and I'm a year 13 student having just graduated from St Paul's School London and finished A levels and looking to go on to study Mathematics at either the University of Cambridge or Imperial College London next year, with 4 A* predicted and 9s in 11/11 subjects at GCSE. I really love Maths and Physics and so I naturally have spent lots of time trying to understand the entire A level syllabus, to the point where I'm now confident I could teach it and anything below that to absolutely anybody, and would love to be able to help those who want to improve their grades. I have had the most wonderful teachers during my time at school and so I am now confident that I can transmit any concepts and ideas lucidly to any of my tutees.

Teaching Experience:
I've tutored previously in St Mary's Ukrainian School for a period of 6 months, where I tutored GCSE Maths and brought up three peoples' grades from a 7 to a 9, a 6 to an 8 and a 6 to a 9 respectively. Although I had to stop the tutoring due to other commitments the students that I tutored said that they would absolutely have continued if I had had the availability, and it heped me understand more where people struggle and how to best help them with their studies.

Tutoring Approach:
Of course I think the question volume is important but beneath all of that I think that you need to have a comprehensive understanding of the subject in order to build confidence for the actual exam so I might use various questions as examples (which I'm very well versed in having just finished A levels) but if it's clear that there's a fundamental gap in understanding I'll address that first before teaching them how to do the questions.

Personal Description:
I followed my passion for understanding the world around me into science to become a cosmologist. Talking about scientific concepts and their connections, and passing on the torch, is just the best.

Through my master's degree at Perimeter Institute I have acquired a strong background in theoretical and mathematical physics. In my PhD at UCL I focused on statistical methods for astronomical data analysis of big cosmology surveys. I worked as a post-doctoral research assistant for 2.5 years on projects across weak gravitational lensing and supernova cosmology, with a stronger focus on machine learning methods. I also worked as a data scientist for the private sector for a few months.
