We have about 50 students in each of years 12 and 13. 26 of our Physics students gained grade As at AS Level in 2006. 48% A and A* at A2 Level in June 2011. This is twice the Welsh average which puts us at the top of tree. 67% A*,A or B in 2012 in my class.Three of my students have won the Institute of Physics prize for the highest A Level marks in Wales with several gaining 600/600. I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. I have a proven high degree of personal motivation, and am capable of working on my own initiative or equally as part of an effective team. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

I have been a teacher for many years having received my PGCE in 1992. Since that time I have worked in a variety of schools in the state and private sectors both in London and Oxfordshire. I believe that each student is different and needs a very specific approach. I will first try to ensure that the concept and the base of the subject is strong before we go on to a number of past paper questions and exercises. I believe that the best way to learn is to see how any problem can be tackled, go through the thought process and then apply what you know to the specific problem and solve it.

I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.
Hopefully once we start tutoring, the students will feel much more confident with the subject and the key to success for any exam is self confidence. I will always be there as a guide, a mentor, a friend to help them through what they find difficult.

Hello to all prospective students. My name is Mark and I have been teaching secondary level Science and maths for over 10 years. I am personally passionate about learning and endeavour to ignite the same love of learning in each student that I teach.

I have loved science and maths from a young age and went on to pursue a degree in biomedical sciences, prior to my secondary teacher training. I hope to continue to work with young people to help them realise their own goals in the fields of science and engineering.

Outside the classroom I am an avid musician and play guitar to grade 6 as well as writing and recording my own songs. I love to listen to audiobooks about ancient history and geopolitics, often whilst on a long walk in the countryside. I also like to play some sports and swim occasionally.

Hi, I'm Frances a friendly retired Science teacher. I am an active 60 year old lady young at heart who enjoy spending time with family and friends.
