Hello! I am 47 years old, originally from Denmark and moved to the UK 20 years ago for my degree. Before teaching, I worked as a monkey veterinary technician in the US, conducted my Masters research on crop-raiding macaques in Indonesia, and helped to run a volunteer expedition in the Amazon. After a couple of years of teaching in secondary school as a Science and Spanish teacher, I heard the call of the wild again and travelled for a year through Mexico and Central America. I now feel very settled here in England and am raising two beautiful daughters, as well as a menagerie of animals, including chickens, guinea pigs, and a dog.

I completed my teaching degree in 2007 at Canterbury Christ Church University. I trained in two very different types of schools.. a private Catholic boarding school and a comprehensive high school, which gave me the experience to engage students of different abilities and backgrounds. I also received training to teach EAL and SEN students. My teaching qualification is in Science, but as a fluent Spanish speaker I also teach Spanish to both adults and children in schools and private tuition. I have since decided to leave mainstream, and now alongside my private tuition, I teach at a democratic learning community where yoga and meditation are taught hand-in-hand with a topic based curriculum. Tutoring Approach:
During the first session I present a short questionnaire that I ask the student to fill in (honestly!) in order for me to assess their individual learning styles (right brain vs. left brain, use of visual stimuli etc), so that I can respond best to their needs. I also strongly encourage an inquisitive and questioning behaviour, where the student is aware that not everything I say should be taken for granted. The key skill universities are looking for is an inquisitive nature, so I do not lecture to the student, I let them give feedback and treat them as an equal, and in most examples let the student lead the session. This way they develop an ability to think for themselves.

My first session is normally spent working out the best tutoring technique, how motivated the student is and what sort of ability they are. For example, in some cases I like to set small amounts of homework which actually help develop a deep understanding of the question, rather than bundles of questions that encourage method-learning repetition.

From here, each session can build on the previous and will depend a lot on the current progress of the student, upcoming examinations, strengths and weaknesses and how confident they are. In general though, I like to go through the content as fast or as slow as necessary, and then do some past paper or textbook questions with the student. Each session I will set an aim determined with the student and work towards that aim.

I am very experienced in teaching having coached volleyball for the past 6 years. Working with children from ages 10 all the way up to members of the university team. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in June 2012 with a degree in mathematics, with honours. I also attained A, A and B in my maths, further maths and physics A Levels, respectively.

Since graduating, I have worked in finance departments and technology, while tutoring part-time. Because my passion for helping others with their maths has grown, I have been tutoring full-time for over a year now.

Hi! I'm Aman, a young and enthusiastic tutor who's currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. I've recently sat the newly reformed GCSE and A-Level curriculum so I'm fully aware of the style of teaching and help required to excel in Mathematics. At GCSE I obtained a grade 8 (A*) and at A-Level I achieved a grade A.

Teaching Experience:
My knowledge of exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA and OCR enable me to alter teaching styles in a way that helps both the student understand but also to check off the various points the examiner is looking for. Throughout my own studies, I often helped out tutoring students with their GCSE maths and also helped my fellow peers. Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is to ensure students understand the areas of learning they are struggling with and build on that to ensure confidence in all areas of the course. I challenge pupils on what they already know to ensure it is correctly reinforced and their confidence grows. I tutor using reciprocal learning, where students are able to independently learn a topic and then have a tutorial style lesson where they reinforce that learning. Tutoring styles are always adapted to the needs of the learner which is very quickly established.

Teaching Experience:
Working in schools with students has allowed me to understand how best to support students in groups or one-to-one situations to help them progress as quick as possible. I have over 1,000 hours experience of tuition and am able to support students of all abilities. Tutoring Approach:
I provide individual and group sessions for KS2 - KS5 students. First sessions revolve around testing the student to build up a picture of their strengths and areas of improvement. A plan will be made to help secure the knowledge they have and build up on the things they don't know. For exam candidates, lessons will focus on strengthening key skills and understanding how to approach exam style questions.

Hi I'm Richard, and have been teaching and tutoring Maths for around 30 years (!). I get on with everybody and am able to draw out from my students what they need to know - the more honest students are about whatever is causing them difficulty, the easier it is to address it. Teaching Experience:
I am a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE from University of York and a 2(i) Bsc in Mathematics from the University of Durham. I was Head of Maths for ten years before choosing to work for myself. I teach all the exam boards (EdExcel, AQA, OCR). I taught in schools for 15 years before becoming a private Maths tutor for the last 15. I tend to do more A-level than anything else, but GCSE or KS3 are not a problem.

Tutoring Approach:
I tend to get the students to drive each session so we can focus on what they tell me is a problem, whether that's a particular topic, a piece of work they've been set, or a particular question. If in doubt, I get them doing exam questions, as that quickly reveals any issues or weaknesses. It's not a problem for me to react to whatever the student tells me they want to cover that particular week. For online students, I set up an online folder with past papers, formula sheet etc so they can also add anything they want to go through with me. When we cover a topic, I'll write up a revision card for the student for them to keep, so next time it comes up we can pull the card out.
