Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

When I'm not acting or tutoring I can be found in the plumbing, plastering, kitchen or grappling with a cryptic crossword.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material to build students' confidence. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative and effective approaches to study, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

My passion is building confidence and fostering resilient approaches to problem solving.

I specialise in tutoring Maths and particularly enjoy helping those students whose confidence in the subject has become a barrier to their learning and enjoyment of the subject.

As a teenager I was lucky enough to receive tuition myself and it made a huge difference, so I really know how much of an advantage it gives.

Tutoring is my full-time job and has been for many years.

I make a conscious effort to ensure I am not just catering for visual learners like myself, but try to see lessons through other learners' eyes. For example, to introduce pictograms to numeracy entry level class, I got the learners to create 'human pictograms' arranged by name length, pets, eye colour, etc. and then transferred that information as pictograms to the board. Kinaesthetic learners were thereby catered for in the physical movement and manipulation, visual learners in the pictograms created on the board and audio learners as we discussed and interpreted the graphs.

I have in particular come to understand the value of sharing learning objectives and success criteria with students. Knowing exactly what is expected and how they can achieve allow learners to focus more clearly on tasks.

I feel it is important to make learning interesting and creative, and one way to achieve this is using real life example; this allows learners to explore and understand situations and express feelings, thoughts and emotions. An example of how I have successfully used real life situation was with a GCSE class, working out the area of the classroom to decide the correct amount of carpet needed for the classroom. I gave the students measuring tape to measure the length and width of the classroom. They were incredibly enthusiastic and threw themselves into the task. They found this a fun, enjoyable and worthwhile learning experience, which enabled them to better understand the situation and empathise with those concerned.

I have achieved a first class degree in Accounting and Business Management. Since then, I have set up my own tutoring business. I am great with children and I find it easy to relate to struggles and problems that they may be facing in school. I am a fully qualified secondary school maths teacher with a BSc in Mathematics offering tuition for all ages. I have been very successful as a teacher and tutor with a wide range of different academic abilities. I have been tutoring full time since 2017. I have a full current DBS (criminal records check). I offer online or face to face lessons at your home or local libaries.

Please note the cost advertised here are for online lessons lasting 40 minutes, longer or face to face lessons will incur extra fees. You can take the option to spread the cost of term time lessons over 12 months (or less if appropriate). For example 36 online lessons at 40 minutes per lesson works out to be 12 payments of £90 per month.

Teaching Experience:
During my teaching career I have taught in 4 different high schools including schools with a sixth form. My first post was in a Lancashire High school where I was responsible for the intervention in Mathematics which involves helping small groups of pupils who are below target in Mathematics. My last GCSE group all achieved grade A*-C. (set 2 of 6)

My next post was in a Sefton High School and sixth form where I was responsible for organising and running intervention. My GCSE group (set 5/bottom set) all achieved at least three levels of progress from their starting point and 3 pupils achieved a grade C (This was above their target grade).

In my final year I was teaching 3 GCSE classes. A higher group in which all achieved 6-9 as well as a vocational group and a bottom set where some pupils achieved grade 4 and others made their expected progress.

Some of the successes include a pupil moving from a predicted grade 6 to a grade 9 and another moving from a 5 in his December mock exam to a grade 8 in his March mock exam, gaining the award for most improved result in the whole school and then went on to achieve a 9 in his GCSE's. Another pupil who moved from a grade 2 to a grade 4. In total I had 14 final year students in 2017, 18 in 2018, 21 in 2019, 25 in 2020 and 23 in 2021, 26 in 2022, 18 in 2023, 12 in 2024 and 14 in 2025 who all improved their grade and achieved grades 4-9 (C-A*+).

Tutoring Approach:
I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject knowledge so I'm able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I have a good relationship with all the people I tutor, they are at ease to ask questions and praise is central to help raise confidence. I am a qualified Mathematics teacher, with 8 years experience in mathematics tuition for 11+ GCSE and A level. Weekly sessions are available, as well as holiday intensive revision, for 11+ or GCSE. I also offer intensive daytime tuition for GCSE resits.

I can also offer informal tuition for adults wishing to improve their maths, or for 'Help with Homework' sessions.

My extensive background and experience enable me to help with a wide range of specifications, including those from exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA, and OCR for GCSE, as well as AQA and Edexcel for A-levels, and Functional Skills Maths.

In addition, I have experience of exam marking at A-level for one of the main exam boards. This puts me in an excellent position to help students to understand how answers need to be presented to obtain maximum marks.

I hold a 1st Class Degree in Mathematics from UCL, and a PGCE in Mathematics with Numeracy from The Institute of Education, UCL. I spent 20 years working in Engineering and teaching Further Education Mathematics, taking a career break to raise my son, but was drawn back to tutoring through helping him develop his love of maths and science.

I enjoy giving back to my local community and volunteer as a maths tutor for The Access Project; offering one-to-one tuition for GCSE and A Level students, for whom it would otherwise not be affordable.

I am a maths tutor, coding geek, musician, and nature lover. My ambition in life is to debunk the two great myths about maths - 1) it's boring, and 2) "I just don't have a maths brain".

Teaching Experience:
10 years experience of working in schools and private tutoring. In-school work includes SEN support, one-to-one and small group maths support. Face-to-face tutoring one-to-one or small groups (up to 4), online tutoring one-to-one.

Tutoring Approach:
I try to make maths far more interesting than school lessons! I like to approach it in an exploratory, creative way.
My students are always given the time to explore and fully understand a topic, without feeling like they're being rushed on to the next topic like at school. They are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and not feel afraid to make mistakes.
