I am a graduate in Physics with Astrophysics, which was a four year degree, which included me living and learning in Italy. My degree was challenging yet enjoyable, and contained a lot of Maths, which to me was great! As a born communicator writing and teaching have always appealed, and having spent the last decade tutoring and working for the Institute of Physics, I can definitely say I enjoy it as much now as I did when I started.. I also have a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:
For the last 12 years I have taught a wide variety of learners from the age of 6 all the way up to 45! This includes Maths, physics, and EFL at all levels, as well as English language/literature and Biology and Chemistry up to GCSE. I also taught children EFL for 6 weeks over a summer. Whilst at university I tutored 1st and 2nd years in Physics, which included a lot of Maths. I taught English as a foreign language whilst I was in Italy. I am a PhD mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

I am extremely proud of my students results in the first year of the new 9-1 GCSE's. All 14 final year students passed their maths exam at a grade 4 or above. One of my pupils who was in set two at a local school achieved the highest possible grade (9) only 3000 of these grades were given nationally. Four of my students were bottom set of next to bottom set and all passed. Two being the only pupils in their class to pass the GCSE.

I am a fully qualified experienced maths teacher with a BSc in Mathematics. I have experience in intervention and one to one tutoring within a high school setting, delivering the intervention sessions in one high school and taking the responsibility of intervention coordinator in another. I have also prepared small groups of pupils for Further/Additional Maths at GCSE Level. I have been very successful in improving under achieving students to achieve their target grade both as a tutor and teacher. For example I took over a GCSE class which was a bottom set who I started teaching at the start of year 11. At that point the highest grade in the class was a grade F. By the end of the year everyone improved significantly and several gained a grade C. As a father I know how important our children achieving their best is to all parents.

Teaching Experience:
During my teaching career I have taught in 4 different high schools including schools with a sixth form. My first post was in a Lancashire High school where I was responsible for the intervention in Mathematics which involves helping small groups of pupils who are below target in Mathematics. My last GCSE group all achieved grade A*-C. (set 2 of 6)

My next post was in a Sefton High School and sixth form where I was responsible for organising and running intervention. My GCSE group (set 5/bottom set) all achieved at least three levels of progress from their starting point and 3 pupils achieved a grade C (This was above their target grade).

In my final year I was teaching 3 GCSE classes. A higher group in which all achieved B-A* as well as a vocational group and a bottom set where some pupils achieved grade C and others made their expected progress.

I have tutored both in school and privately with a lot of success. One example was a private student who came to me having achieved a grade F at the end of year 10. A year later she achieved a C in her GCSE exam. Successes from the exam results in 2016 include an A level student moving from a E to a B. A GCSE student moving from an F to a C who I started tutoring in February. Another GCSE pupil moving from a C to an A.

I am fully up to date with the changes in exams at GCSE Level for the new 9-1 GCSE`s and the changes in the sats for Primary school pupils.

Tutoring Approach:
I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject knowledge so I'm able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I have a good relationship with all the people I tutor, they are at ease to ask questions and praise is central to help raise confidence. I believe there are certain basic skills that are essential to progress with mathematics. My approach is to address the basic skills and then follow up with practice and more practice. I have found in all my teaching experience that progress is enhanced if the tutee has fun. Self motivation is the most efficient way of progressing and enjoyment of the activity enhances motivation.

I am a recent graduate from The University of Birmingham in Pure Mathematics achieving an upper second class degree (2:1). I was drawn to the field of mathematics from a very young age. I guess that I was intrigued by the vast range of concepts in the real world that can be represented with huge accuracy. From finding hugely accurate values that would be impossible to measure in reality (such as the exact size and direction of the force needed to apply to a golf ball to get a perfect hole in one any time), to hiding information and creating impossible to crack secret codes that can be to hard for the most powerful computers but can be simple enough for any good mathematician to solve with just a pen and paper. Even though it wan't at all necessary, I learnt this, and still enjoy secretly communicating with other students. I also even help other students at the same level as me who didn't completely understand certain areas as well as i did. The same it true that I required help on the topics I couldn't understand well.

My experiences of tuition are that I have spent the last year giving the odd lesson to a few A-Level students that are struggling in mathematics to help raise their grades up. Further, as part of my university experience, i spent one hour per week for a year tutoring disadvantaged students at a local secondary school. Ben has been working with my boys for past 4 months now and I couldn`t happier with my choice. My boys are really happy to be tutored by Ben. They feel that their confidence has increased and look forward to working with him. As parents we feel Ben knows child`s ability and aptitude like the back of his hand. When Ben started working with my boys I was really happy with his systematic approach towards the subject depending on the ability of the kids. It is not one size fits all approach but it is customized. Though being twins they are different and Ben has identified this and understood their uniqueness from the first session. Ben has taught my son for Eleven plus since September and I can see my kid doing his daily homework himself without expecting our help. We can see the way of reading has changed and now he looks for new words and try to find the meaning.

Most importantly, Ben develops the wrap over the kid and takes control of reading and writing completely, leaving us in the back seat to see he completes the daily homework. This is great, as we don`t want to study class 4,5 again or teach a different method than thought in school.

We have been impressed with Ben`s knowledge, experience and commitment. He is reliable and always turns up on time. Ben has excellent teaching skills and my daughter significantly improved in class from lower to top groups. I`ve seen him working really hard with my daughter while preparing her for 11+ and he knows the tricks to make the pupil understand the exam technique and how to improve academically. I am currently a 3rd Yr BSc Discrete Mathematics (Maths & Computer Science) undergraduate at the University of Warwick with a predicted grade of First.
Mathematics has always been a passion of mine because I love the problem-solving aspect of it and the useful applications it has to the real world. Maths is far more significant than most people think, since most of us use it in our everyday life, yet they lack the proper understanding of certain concepts to solve various unseen problems.
As a result, I believe that Maths provides students with an effective way of building mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor. Also, mathematical knowledge plays a fundamental role in understanding the content of other school subjects.
My approach of gaining a full understanding of the content and completing several practice questions proved to be extremely rewarding since it allowed me to successfully attain a GCSE Excellence Award (achieved by the top 5% of the cohort) as well as obtaining over 90% in all of my Maths A-Level modules.
Most importantly, I want to pass this curiosity and enthusiasm onto my students to unlock their true potential, alongside utilizing my 1 year of teaching experience, in order to make Maths more enjoyable for them and consistently adapt my tutorials to address any of their weaknesses to ensure they are resolved asap so that they can truly appreciate what they are learning.

1) Presenting and delivering the content in way that is easy and enjoyable to learn, since it is proven and from my experience that this is the most beneficial and quickest way for students to learn.
2) Ensuring that my students are understanding the content comfortably instead of simply memorizing it. I will do this through constant interaction, whilst working through countless exam-style and unseen questions with them to ensure that they can apply key concepts of what they have learned.
Together, this will guarantee that my students are not only well-equipped for their upcoming exams, but by solving more complex unseen problems, it will make the exam questions seem easy in comparison so that my students can effortlessly achieve the highest possible grade.
Each session, I will spend a small amount of time highlighting some weak areas from the previous tutorials, so that we can discuss how to improve as a way of tracking progress. After this, I will run through some example questions and ask students to explain their ideas and their thought process on solving the problem as if they were teaching it to me, which will truly demonstrate the student's ability on how well they have understood the topic. Throughout the session, I am more than happy to answer any questions/ queries from the students regarding anything they have learnt, in order to maximize their knowledge and confidence in the exams.

I currently study at The Open University towards a BSci Hons Natural Sciences degree.
