After graduating in 2003, I began my teaching career by doing supply teaching with Select Education (Liverpool), working in a number of short term posts in different schools in Knowsley and Liverpool. During my time there, I gained experience of teaching a wide variety of schemes of work (Key Stage 3, Modular GCSE, Coursework, Linear GCSE) and also taught sixth form GCSE resit classes for 2 years. I was also a form tutor for 5 years carrying my form through from Year 7 to Year 11 and participated in the school PSHE programme where I was involved in designing a unit of work for year 7 pupils with regards to financial management and calculations.
I left Holly Lodge in July 2009 due to my father becoming seriously ill and his subsequent death and took a year out of teaching to begin a family history research project before returning to the profession in September 2010 by working for Celsian Education (Liverpool) as a supply. However work was few and far between so by September 2011, I moved to another agency The Education Specialists. But once again work was far from plentiful. In October 2013, I joined Our Whiston Library Group (OWL) as a campaigner/volunteer with the initial aim of opening in April 2014 in partnership with Hugh Baird College of Bootle, but they withdrew at the last minute leaving our group to make a bid on our own to take over the building. I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

In my experience working with many students in a supportive, relaxed and friendly atmosphere on a one to one basis is completely the opposite to the classroom environment.

Students often find it difficult due to pier pressure to question when struggling to understand a particular topic.On a one to one basis this is easily overcome and it does result in significant improvements in their attainment.

I have taught mathematics and economics to school students since past 3 years. I have also taught undergrad students during my engineering education.

I am a GTC (General Teaching Council for Scotland) registered Maths teacher with a first class hons BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Edinburgh University and a background in engineering and industry.

While I am highly academically qualified, I understand how it feels to struggle with study and the benefit of getting extra support. I found parts of maths and language difficult at school and was lucky to have a couple of very understanding teachers who helped correct the damage to confidence and understanding left by some rather less sympathetic practitioners.

I have many interests from sports and the environment to languages and the arts and believe in lifelong learning to help gain new skills remain adaptable and responsive to change. I have distinctions from the OU in maths and psychology courses and continue to access various online learning opportunities. This enables me to take a broad outlook and to encourage students to think widely and deeply about opportunities and issues in the world.

I really enjoy tutoring students and helping them to achieve in their studies and gain a sense of satisfaction in their work.

The students who were failing and dispirited who progress to pass with very secure B grades, their confidence and positivity restored.
