Personal Description:
I am 69 years old and retired from full time teaching in August 2014 after a teaching career of some 23 years. Since retiring I have done some part time teaching and private tuition. During the course of the last three years I have tutored some 30 students and have many written testimonials from parents regarding my tuition, you are welcome to contact current students to check the progress their child has made with my help. I am married with 3 children and live in the Chorley area. I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1979 with a degree in Construction Management and spent the first 12 years of my working life in the construction industry. I began teaching at Stockport College in 1991 and gained a P.G.C.E. in Secondary Maths shortly afterwards, I started at Oldham Sixth Form College in May 2003.
I have tutored a number of Primary School children during school closures and lockdowns and have access to a wealth of Secondary and Primary resources.
I have recently started tutoring as part of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) giving on line lessons as part of the Government initiative to enable pupils to catch up on lost learning.
I am now offering online lessons at a rate of £25 per hour for Primary and G.C.S.E.

Teaching Experience:
I taught at Stockport College for 11 years retired from Oldham Sixth Form College in 2014 after almost 13 years there. I have taught a broad range of maths courses during that time and was course leader for level 2 maths at O.S.F.C. for 8 years before retirement. I have taught G.C.S.E maths for many years and have considerable experience teaching C1, C2 C3, C4 S1, S2 and D1 as part of A' level mathematics. I am familiar with both the Edexcel and AQA GCSE and A level specifications.
I have been an examiner for AQA at G.C.S.E. and am currently an examiner for The Cambridge Board marking the IGCSE and also for Edexcel marking C1 and C3, I have therefore lots of exam board experience and have many tips for maximising marks to pass on.
For students starting A level maths I have lots of bridging resources to enable students to make a seamless transition to advanced level study.

Personal Description:
I am extremely proud of my students results in the first year of the new 9-1 GCSE's. All 14 final year students passed their maths exam at a grade 4 or above. One of my pupils who was in set two at a local school achieved the highest possible grade (9) only 3000 of these grades were given nationally. Four of my students were bottom set of next to bottom set and all passed. Two being the only pupils in their class to pass the GCSE.

I am a fully qualified experienced maths teacher with a BSc in Mathematics. I have experience in intervention and one to one tutoring within a high school setting, delivering the intervention sessions in one high school and taking the responsibility of intervention coordinator in another. I have also prepared small groups of pupils for Further/Additional Maths at GCSE Level. I have been very successful in improving under achieving students to achieve their target grade both as a tutor and teacher. For example I took over a GCSE class which was a bottom set who I started teaching at the start of year 11. At that point the highest grade in the class was a grade F. By the end of the year everyone improved significantly and several gained a grade C. As a father I know how important our children achieving their best is to all parents.

Teaching Experience:
During my teaching career I have taught in 4 different high schools including schools with a sixth form. My first post was in a Lancashire High school where I was responsible for the intervention in Mathematics which involves helping small groups of pupils who are below target in Mathematics. My last GCSE group all achieved grade A*-C. (set 2 of 6)

My next post was in a Sefton High School and sixth form where I was responsible for organising and running intervention. My GCSE group (set 5/bottom set) all achieved at least three levels of progress from their starting point and 3 pupils achieved a grade C (This was above their target grade).

In my final year I was teaching 3 GCSE classes. A higher group in which all achieved B-A* as well as a vocational group and a bottom set where some pupils achieved grade C and others made their expected progress.

I have tutored both in school and privately with a lot of success. One example was a private student who came to me having achieved a grade F at the end of year 10. A year later she achieved a C in her GCSE exam. Successes from the exam results in 2016 include an A level student moving from a E to a B. A GCSE student moving from an F to a C who I started tutoring in February. Another GCSE pupil moving from a C to an A.

I am fully up to date with the changes in exams at GCSE Level for the new 9-1 GCSE`s and the changes in the sats for Primary school pupils.

Tutoring Approach:
I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject knowledge so I'm able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I have a good relationship with all the people I tutor, they are at ease to ask questions and praise is central to help raise confidence. I'm an easy going, empathetic, supportive and patient tutor who is dedicated to my students. I'm very thorough in my teaching and ensure no stone is left unturned in preparing my students for their maths exams/tests. I am a qualified Chartered Accountant, working as a financial accountant at a large property and casualty insurer in the City of London. My Father was a Mathematics teacher in London for nearly forty years, which is most likely where I get my boundless enthusiasm for these subjects from! During the first session I present a short questionnaire that I ask the student to fill in (honestly!) in order for me to assess their individual learning styles (right brain vs. left brain, use of visual stimuli etc), so that I can respond best to their needs. Every lesson will begin with an outline of the subject content and the intended aims. The key to success in maths and economics is to do it! As a school tutor during my A-Level studies, I have tutored GCSE students for Mathematics. I applied my patience to introduce difficult ideas carefully. In the cases for tutoring mechanics, my tutee found it difficult to identify and link various components of the forces together and to grasp the content clearly. Thus, I investigated the source of this lack of understanding then gave a clear explanation and support. Afterwards, I managed to explain various application questions using the struggling contents and interacting with my tutee (ie. asking what the next step would be) as I went through the questions to expand his understanding. I shared my method of working out the questions logically and giving clear guidance helped him greatly, hence, I was able to see improvement in his speed of understanding and solving of the questionnaires, showing a transition in his grades in Mathematics.

As a student of mathematics for over 25 years (and counting!), I have dedicated the past five years to making mathematics accessible to secondary students around the world.

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a 1st Class BSc Hons in Economics, I worked as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant at professional services firm, PwC.

In search of a more fulfilling profession, I made the move into teaching through the Teach First programme in 2018 as a secondary mathematics teacher. Since then, I have taught as a qualified classroom teacher in the UK and as a Head of Department (Mathematics, Science, and Design) in China helping students from the age of 10 to 19 achieve their academic and personal goals.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught Maths as a qualified teacher in UK secondary schools. I then went on to teach Maths, Economics, and Business Management at an international school in China, where I was also Subject Group Leader for Maths, Science, and Design.

Tutoring Approach:
As a tutor, I will:
- arrive to lesson with materials prepared
- highlight areas where the student's understanding is correct
- identify the student's misconceptions
- welcome "why?" and "what if?" questions
- guide the student through worked examples
- give the student opportunities to display their knowledge

I work with the student to ensure they:
- arrive to their lesson equipped and ready to learn
- explain their thought process when solving a problem
- ask the tutor "why?" and "what if?" questions
- organise knowledge by creating meaningful notes

My aim is to:
- guide students to build an understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than relying on merely teaching procedures
- support students with their in-school learning, rather than acting as a replacement for school-based lessons
- help students overcome maths-related anxiety; no topic is considered to be "easy" and the focus is always on making progress
- build a positive tutor-student relationship where students are comfortable making mistakes

Tutoring Approach:
I put an emphasis on a deep understanding of each concept, theory, method, and observation, as well as acquiring and mastering technical skills.I am thorough in teaching, and besides explaining everything clearly I also provide and walk with the student through the necessary material - usually in the form of slides, interactive questions and quizzes, simulations, notes, problems and past papers / exam practice papers - for a solid understanding through assimilation of the ideas as well as practice. Problem-solving methods are discussed and explained, not only as to how a problem is solved, but also why it's solved that way: this helps the student understand the maths and science behind the problem better, as well as develop their critical and analytical abilities that will help them tackle any other problem in maths and science as well as in life in general.

I encourage questioning, not hesitating to raise unclear points, individuality in thinking and working, having an inquisitive and creative mind, and being good friends and generosity with working time. My particular planning and delivery of the tutorials depend on the individual student's current motivation, needs, and knowledge, as well as the particular content of the topic that is taught. I also often discuss with the student ways to learn as well as study. True learning and understanding has a multifaceted nature.

I believe that everyone has the potential to reach their aims, and I always do my utmost so that this will happen for each one of my students.
