I decided to start tutoring after my experience in trying to get tutors for my own children. As a professional working internationally I thought it would be easy to hand over this important element of their education to someone with both experience and patience. My notion was quickly turned on its head. The Tutors I found taught textbook style with the one shoe fits all approach. My children and others didn't fit into that mould. I very quickly realised that I could do a better job and took the role in house, initially teaching my own daughters before extending out to their friends.

I completed Nuclear Power Engineering degree studies in 1990 after 6 years of training in Havana and Moscow. Between 1990 and 2004, I worked as a Biomedical researcher in the fields of Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Vaccine Development. This involves collaboration with many European and American research teams and working visits to leading Biomedical centres in UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Spain including several UK Royal Society Fellowships and a UK Wellcome Trust International Travelling Post-doctoral Fellowship at Glasgow University Division of Immunology/Microbiology, which can be followed up by publication in peer-review scientific journals. Since 2006, I have been teaching Mathematics at GCSE and A-levels in the UK and currently, I am teaching at these levels plus International Baccalaureate Level. I have been an external marker (Mathematics in English and Spanish languages) for the International Baccalaureate Organisation for the last two years. During the first session I present a short questionnaire that I ask the student to fill in (honestly!) in order for me to assess their individual learning styles (right brain vs. left brain, use of visual stimuli etc), so that I can respond best to their needs. Teaching Experience:
During my teaching career I have taught in 4 different high schools including schools with a sixth form. My first post was in a Lancashire High school where I was responsible for the intervention in Mathematics which involves helping small groups of pupils who are below target in Mathematics. My last GCSE group all achieved grade A*-C. (set 2 of 6)

My next post was in a Sefton High School and sixth form where I was responsible for organising and running intervention. My GCSE group (set 5/bottom set) all achieved at least three levels of progress from their starting point and 3 pupils achieved a grade C (This was above their target grade).

In my final year I was teaching 3 GCSE classes. A higher group in which all achieved 6-9 as well as a vocational group and a bottom set where some pupils achieved grade 4 and others made their expected progress.

Some of the successes include a pupil moving from a predicted grade 6 to a grade 9 and another moving from a 5 in his December mock exam to a grade 8 in his March mock exam, gaining the award for most improved result in the whole school and then went on to achieve a 9 in his GCSE's. Another pupil who moved from a grade 2 to a grade 4. In total I had 14 final year students in 2017, 18 in 2018, 21 in 2019, 25 in 2020 and 23 in 2021, 26 in 2022, 18 in 2023, 12 in 2024 and 14 in 2025 who all improved their grade and achieved grades 4-9 (C-A*+).

Tutoring Approach:
I want all my students to be able to develop their understanding of mathematics rather than just learning how to answer a question. I try to work with their class teacher in following the methods they are being taught at school but also realise that different methods may be appropriate if they are struggling. I set homework weekly which is assessed at the start each session unless it is a longer piece or exam paper which is taken away and marked and brought back to the next session. I plan topics which are linked to previous learning in order to develop the bigger picture of mathematics but have excellent subject knowledge so I'm able to change my plan if the student wishes to look at another area that might have arisen as a problem in school/college. I also like my students to be proactive and get in touch if they wish to cover a particular topic which wasn't mentioned at the end of the previous session. I am genuinely passionate about my subjects and in seeing learners reach their potential. I too enjoy the challenge of mastering new things and embracing the notion that you never ever stop learning.

Personal Description:
I am a GTC (General Teaching Council for Scotland) registered Maths teacher with a first class hons BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Edinburgh University and a background in engineering and industry.

While I am highly academically qualified, I understand how it feels to struggle with study and the benefit of getting extra support. I found parts of maths and language difficult at school and was lucky to have a couple of very understanding teachers who helped correct the damage to confidence and understanding left by some rather less sympathetic practitioners.

I have many interests from sports and the environment to languages and the arts and believe in lifelong learning to help gain new skills remain adaptable and responsive to change. I have distinctions from the OU in maths and psychology courses and continue to access various online learning opportunities. This enables me to take a broad outlook and to encourage students to think widely and deeply about opportunities and issues in the world.

I really enjoy tutoring students and helping them to achieve in their studies and gain a sense of satisfaction in their work.

Teaching Experience:
I have over 20 years of teaching experience. I am very comfortable using online tools for tuition and assisting students to use them in collaboration with me so that remote sessions are productive, personal and interactive.

What I value in teaching:

Those "Aha moments" that my student's experience when they make the connections that help it all make sense... sadly so often missed out in some of the narrowly focused school based classroom environments...

The students who go from bottom of the class and being advised they should aim for N4 not N5, to achieving A grades and their teachers recommending them for higher...

The students who were failing and dispirited who progress to pass with very secure B grades, their confidence and positivity restored.

Tutoring Approach:
A positive relationship between tutor and tutee is essential for effective learning, so building a respectful and trusting dynamic is the basis of my work. I always seek to focus on improving and deepening understanding with an approach that reduces anxiety and builds confidence and motivation.

My teaching style is collaborative and supportive. I am friendly and approachable with a real concern for each student's experiences, passions and difficulties and how I might best help them. I take a flexible approach to build positive relationships with students of varying interests and personalities.

Building a student's understanding of the fundamentals of the subject is key as this leads to deep and effective long term learning and will build confidence in the student and also their cognitive abilities to perform at higher levels.

I also work hard to help students improve their study techniques and to become more independent learners and more reflective and critical thinkers. This helps students to achieve at their best in all subject areas and also to develop the resilience and self-directed study skills needed to succeed in their future studies.

Personal Description:
I'm currently studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester. Have a huge passion for Mathematics and Physics. In my GCSEs I achieved 4A*'s in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, as well as an A in A-level Mathematics.

Teaching Experience:
Did a huge amount of voluntary work helping teach secondary school students during my A-level years and I am currently tutoring students Maths and Physics.

Tutoring Approach:
I use a more fundamental approach wherein a student can come to me with any questions or topics that they found hard during class. Lessons are then tailored to each student depending on what needs work.

Personal Description:
Third year University of Glasgow student, studying Geology, with electives in chemistry, calculus and astonomy. In my spare time I enjoy getting outdoors, reading and sewing!

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored GCSE level chemistry and maths for two years, and worked with young people up to the ages of 16 at summer camps.

Tutoring Approach:
I strongly believe that the best method of learning is practice. I personally like making mindmaps, flashcards and doing plently of practice questions, as these are methods of active recall which is proven to be the best revision method. I find I learn best when I make mistakes, and then I am given guidance on how to fix them, which is how I will aim to teach.
