I am a qualified teacher with over twelve years' classroom experience and a four-year integrated Master's degree in Chemistry (MSci) from Imperial College London, where I graduated with First Class Honours in 2013.

I have taught Chemistry at a leading independent boys' school, and before that spent two and a half years at an independent girls' school. I hold both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and taught across a range of state schools while training. Tutoring Approach:
How I teach:

I introduce new material by building on what a student already knows, so each concept connects to something familiar rather than arriving out of nowhere. Chemistry becomes very difficult when it is learned as disconnected rules, and much more manageable when students see how the ideas fit together.

When a student is stuck on an exam question, I don't hand them the answer. I give a hint - enough to get their thinking moving, and no more - and let them arrive at it themselves. It takes a little longer, but it is the difference between a student who can answer that question and one who can answer the questions they haven't seen yet.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation of academic success. I therefore spend considerable time making sure these foundations are secure before moving on to more complicated material.

If a student doesn't understand something, I don't assume they are incapable of understanding it. Sometimes it simply needs to be explained differently. My job is to find that explanation.

I am a strong believer in understanding rather than rote learning. I want students to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, rather than simply memorising and reproducing something they have seen previously. Once a student genuinely understands a concept, they are much better equipped to apply it to unfamiliar questions.

I also encourage practical understanding. Particularly in Economics and Business, I frequently use real-world examples to make abstract theory more relevant and memorable. Where appropriate, I relate material to businesses, financial markets, government policy and situations students are likely to encounter outside the classroom.

As examinations approach, I increasingly focus on applying this understanding to exam questions. This includes question interpretation, structure, application, analysis, evaluation, time management and understanding exactly what examiners are looking for.

Finally, I believe successful teaching is ultimately about listening to your students. I constantly encourage students to question things and tell me when they don't understand or are unsure.

If a student appears hesitant, I will often ask open questions or ask them to explain the concept back to me. This allows me to understand their thought process rather than simply establishing whether they have arrived at the correct answer.

I have high expectations of my students and expect them to put effort into their studies, but I also want them to feel comfortable making mistakes. Mistakes are often the quickest way for me to identify exactly what a student doesn't understand and therefore what I need to explain differently.

Ultimately, my aim is to make students increasingly independent of me. A successful student should eventually have the knowledge, confidence and skills to tackle difficult problems themselves.

I recently completed a PhD in Bioengineering at Imperial College London, carrying out mathematical research on heart disease. My first degree was in Maths at the same university, and I took a Masters in Biomedical Research in between.

I decided to start tutoring after my experience in trying to get tutors for my own children. As a professional working internationally I thought it would be easy to hand over this important element of their education to someone with both experience and patience. Passionate about teaching, I am happy to teach online, in person and glad to help with home schooling. My aim is to support students so that they don't find subjects daunting, and to help stretch others in order to reach towards their true potential. As a former Deputy Headteacher of a north Wales primary school, I have 12 years of teaching KS1 and KS2. I spent much of this time working with children with SEND. Since starting my tuition company, I have a further 16 years of tutoring (face to face and online) students from Key Stages 1,2,3,4 and adults too. As well as teaching a wide range of subjects, I have also successfully helped a number of students with entrance exam preparation and mentored a number of secondary students who have faced significant challenges with their schooling.

I like to support students in a stimulating, fun and successful manner, often creating my own worksheets to adapt to the needs of the student. The prices listed are for an hour and don't include any travel expenses, but online prices are £28 for 45 minutes. I chose to reduce my hours as a school teacher five years ago so that I could focus my attention on my tutoring business full time.
