Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

My name is Jo and I live in Balloch.
.I have 37 years of dedicated service in education, I recently retired after a fulfilling career focused on enhancing children's learning. For 15 years, I served as a Principal Teacher in a large, diverse school in Glasgow's West End, where I led teams and supported whole-school improvement. As Literacy Leader of Learning for 6 years, I championed innovative approaches to reading and writing across the curriculum.

Teaching Experience:
For the past six years, my role has been Challenge Leader of Learning/Principal Teacher in a large school in the West End of Glasgow. Through the Literacy for All CPD training and guidance courses that I have attended, my remit has been to improve reading, writing , talking and listening as part of the Scottish Attainment Challenge with the focus on giving all children the same opportunity to succeed, with a particular focus on closing the poverty related attainment gap and promote equity for all. This year due to Covid 19 I have had to develop my digital literacy skills in order to home school through Google Classroom, Seesaw and Teams. • A member of the Senior Management team within a large school, collaborating on improving all areas of the curriculum using HGIOS4. I am an enthusiastic and supportive Business Studies tutor with a strong passion for helping students grow in confidence and achieve their academic goals. I hold a BSc in Management with Marketing, and I am currently completing my PGCE in Business Studies, which is allowing me to deepen both my subject knowledge and my teaching practice.

While my formal teaching experience is still developing, I have worked with children and young people in school settings, supporting lessons, helping with group work, and assisting students who need extra guidance. These experiences have strengthened my ability to adapt to different learning styles, communicate clearly, and create a positive learning atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring ideas.

Teaching Experience:

I'm Oliver - I have a passion for all things English and am looking for tutees happy to work over Zoom / Teams etc, either on weekday evenings or weekend mornings.

I hold a BA in English from The University of Liverpool and an MA also in English Literature.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught English for 9 years now across a number of schools in Merseyside and London. I currently work as a Lead Practitioner of English and Lead for Key Stage 4, though I have also previously led in my school on Key Stage 5 English Literature also.

I have also marked extensively at GCSE and A Level for the AQA exam board - so I know what students need to do to achieve marks - and have had a lot of success previously with predicting exam questions for GCSE Literature.

My particular specialisms are GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature and A Level English Literature, particularly within the AQA specifications. I can be particularly of help also with the following set texts: Macbeth, Romeo
And Juliet, A Christmas Carol, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, An Inspector Calls, Power and Conflict Poetry.

Tutoring Approach:
I conduct tutoring sessions over zoom / teams etc. ideally in one or two hour slots so that progress can be made. To make the most of your time I like to get the tutee to do small bits of work in this time so that I can offer immediate feedback. My name is Hannah. I am a bubbly, outgoing person who is reliable, enthusiastic and passionate about teaching.
In my spare time I enjoy up-cycling furniture and traveling. I love to be outdoors and will always try to walk when I can.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching for 20 years. In addition to my primary teaching qualification I also have a qualification in special educational needs. I have a vast amount of experience teaching all ages across the primary sector in all subjects and with all different abilities and needs. I have been a SENDCo, managed and lead numerous subjects and have a thorough understanding of safeguarding.

I try to plan and teach lessons to suit and tailor individual students in order to meet their needs. I am very patient in my approach to delivering lessons and I pride myself on taking my time to listen to students and parents alike. I try to source tailored resources to meet the needs of the student and will use a range of media ranging from papers, online games and other stimuli in order to keep the student engaged and focused.
