I am an experienced and skilled Tutor of French, Russian and English as a foreign language. I have been tutoring continuously on a part time basis for 12 years, typically working with 5 or 6 students at any one time. I have spent several years living and working abroad, so this has given me quite an international outlook. When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

My experience of tutoring has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

I have over 12 years of experience working across different areas of education, including 3 years as a Teaching Assistant, 8 years as a Primary School Teacher, and the past three and a half years as a full-time online tutor.

During my time in schools, I taught across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, with responsibility for planning and delivering lessons in English and Mathematics, as well as preparing pupils for SATs and supporting targeted intervention groups. I have also worked closely with pupils with additional learning needs, adapting resources and approaches to ensure progress and engagement.

Alongside classroom teaching, I have extensive experience delivering one-to-one and small group tuition both in person and online. This includes supporting learners for SATs, 11+, and general academic improvement, as well as teaching English as a Foreign Language to international students of varying ages and abilities.

In addition, I run a small tutoring team, overseeing lesson quality and supporting tutors to ensure consistency in delivery and student progress.

I place strong emphasis on adapting each lesson to the learner's goals, ensuring that every session is purposeful and targeted. Whether the focus is exam preparation, core skill development, or confidence building, I structure lessons to provide clear guidance and steady improvement.

Ultimately, my goal is to support each student in reaching their learning goals while building confidence, independence, and a genuine enjoyment of the subject.
