I also use multimedia aids to help students visualise biological/chemical processes where appropriate and I have created PowerPoint files covering all A-level and GCSE Biology and Chemistry topics, tailored to each syllabus/exam board. A bit of background about me: I completed my degree in chemistry in 1993 and began my PhD in physical chemistry the following year. Following completion of my PhD I continued to work in academic research in physical and materials chemistry until 2002 when I changed career to work in industry. I initially started off as a chemist in an analytical laboratory before working my way into senior management in the automotive, chemical and oil industries. Tutoring Approach:
I find an informal style works best, particularly with secondary school students. The 1-to-1 (or small classroom) nature of tutoring lends itself well to this style, and over the years I have found that creating an environment in which the student is at ease and not afraid to make mistakes is essential to the learning process.

Having discussed the content of the lesson with the student / parent(s) prior to the lesson, a typical lesson would usually start by clarifying what the student expects out of the lesson and what knowledge I hope to impart upon the student. Using A-level Maths as an example, let's assume for the moment that the student is completely stuck at differentiating using the quotient rule (a common complaint I've received from students). I typically set the student a warm-up problem and ask them to do it whilst I watch. I watch and make mental and written notes of the key steps where their understanding is lacking or where their procedure for doing the question could be improved. I then discuss this with the student, and often, I take the time to derive the rules from first principles, with the aim of forming links in the student's brain so they don't "think" about answering the question next time. As an example, the quotient rule and be derived from the product rule, and once I show them this (not often done at school), the logic behind it is no longer opaque, and the student is often able to perform better on subsequent problems.

We then typically work through a subset of increasingly more challenging problems, and I resist the urge to tell the student the answer, instead asking targeted questions to guide them in the right direction. I almost always set homework problems, including at least one stretching problem, which are tailored to the needs of the specific student I am teaching, and we begin the next lesson by clarifying anything from the problems. Most lessons, I naturally make links between the content and my own career or another example from the world of work. I find this gives the students context and enthuses them.

Importantly, I don't recommend further tuition when it is not necessary. As an example, you may decide to start with hourly lessons twice per week. As your child's understanding and confidence grows, we may decide together that we feel comfortable dropping down to once a week. This is an excellent outcome that we can take pride in. I view my job as not only to impart knowledge and turn that A into an A*, but also to give the student the tools they need to direct their own learning.

Prior to this I was a student studying Economics at the University of Birmingham, where I achieved a first level BSc. Before tutoring a student, I identify what qualifications they have received previously in that particular subject as well as what exam they wish to prepare for. Then I highlight the contents of the course, provide the student with resources and give online lessons via Google Meet in which I share my screen so the student can see a Miro whiteboard that I use to write notes and explain/solve questions on. Throughout the lesson, the topics that we cover are revisited through homework questions that I set my students to ensure they have sufficient practice and that they can readily apply their knowledge.

Developing the ability to solve different types of questions challenging you from different angles on the same topics, is what is challenged repeatedly in SQA exams which require efficient skills in problem solving. I help equip the student with the knowledge, practice and expertise to deal with exam-type questions after we have covered the theory (notes/topics) of the subject.

I'm experienced in working with SEN. I`ve achieved excellent results with pupils with specific learning difficulties and behavioural problems. My experiences in this area are in Down syndrome, dyslexia dyspraxia, ADHD, Asperger's, ASD, verbal dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder. I've also taught pupils with cerebral palsy, deafness and visual acuity problems. I`ve completed a basic sign language course & RPM for ASD. I did this so I could communicate with pupils, without relying on a teaching assistant to translate for them/me.
Apart from classroom teaching and tutoring I've also been a curriculum coordinator for people with ASD. I specialize in helping clients with learning difficulties and disabilities (ASD, ADHD, Asperses, & dyslexia/dyspraxia). I believe it`s very important to understand how people approach learning. Everyone learns differently. I like to understand a pupils strengths through looking at how they learn (Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic (VAK)). I take the information I learn and find the best way to adapt teaching/learning. I'm a graduate of the University of Cambridge (Murray Edwards College) in Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics, with over five years of teaching experience. After university, I spent a year as a Science teaching assistant in a top Oxford senior school, and a further two years as a classroom teacher abroad, mainly in China, where I taught Physics and Maths A level. I just finished studying for a Masters in Environment, Politics and Development at SOAS in London. I live in Brixton and am available for online or in-person tutoring and have a flexible schedule.

Tutoring Approach:
I like to explain concepts using real world examples that students can visualise and recall the next time they have to answer a question on that topic. I absolutely love Science and Maths, and aim for my enthusiasm to rub off on my students! Tutoring Approach:
Every student is different and my teaching style is adapted to their individual needs once we have identified their weaknesses.

I believe understanding is the best approach to learning and teaching. There's no point in just memorising things if you don't understand where they came from. I explain things in such a way that it is easy to understand, and I am very patient.

However, I cannot perform miracles. Students aiming for top grades would be expected to do some homework in between sessions.

I also offer a lot of flexibility. If the student has learnt something in school they didn't quite understand, I can go over the topic again with them during our lesson. If the student understood everything in school, I can teach them new topics to prepare them for when they learn that topic in school. Lastly, near exam times, I can offer intense exam revision and exam paper practice.
