Hello! My name is Gemma and I am a 32 year old doctor, chartered accountant, strategy consultant and successful start up founder. I graduated in medicine from Nottingham University in 2016, switched to finance, became a qualified chartered accountant, and now work for one of the 'Big4' in health advisory and strategic consulting. However, my heart will always lie with the sciences, and somehow in amongst all of my wide ranging career, my favourite job has always been teaching.

I have been tutoring maths and science (chemistry, biology, physics) to GCSE level for several years, and more recently maths and biology to A level standard. I have experience with ages 6-18 (and a few adults as well!), as well as with children with autism and ADHD.

Informal, friendly and flexible approach (usually with tea and cake!). Teaching Experience:
I specialise in bespoke 1-to-1 lessons with students, but I can also offer group lessons upon request. Lessons are usually by the hour, but can be in the format of a "crash course" in a subject over, for example, a weekend.

Tutoring Approach:
I find an informal style works best, particularly with secondary school students. The 1-to-1 (or small classroom) nature of tutoring lends itself well to this style, and over the years I have found that creating an environment in which the student is at ease and not afraid to make mistakes is essential to the learning process.

Having discussed the content of the lesson with the student / parent(s) prior to the lesson, a typical lesson would usually start by clarifying what the student expects out of the lesson and what knowledge I hope to impart upon the student. Using A-level Maths as an example, let's assume for the moment that the student is completely stuck at differentiating using the quotient rule (a common complaint I've received from students). I typically set the student a warm-up problem and ask them to do it whilst I watch. I watch and make mental and written notes of the key steps where their understanding is lacking or where their procedure for doing the question could be improved. I then discuss this with the student, and often, I take the time to derive the rules from first principles, with the aim of forming links in the student's brain so they don't "think" about answering the question next time. As an example, the quotient rule and be derived from the product rule, and once I show them this (not often done at school), the logic behind it is no longer opaque, and the student is often able to perform better on subsequent problems.

We then typically work through a subset of increasingly more challenging problems, and I resist the urge to tell the student the answer, instead asking targeted questions to guide them in the right direction. I almost always set homework problems, including at least one stretching problem, which are tailored to the needs of the specific student I am teaching, and we begin the next lesson by clarifying anything from the problems. Most lessons, I naturally make links between the content and my own career or another example from the world of work. I find this gives the students context and enthuses them.

Importantly, I don't recommend further tuition when it is not necessary. As an example, you may decide to start with hourly lessons twice per week. As your child's understanding and confidence grows, we may decide together that we feel comfortable dropping down to once a week. This is an excellent outcome that we can take pride in. I view my job as not only to impart knowledge and turn that A into an A*, but also to give the student the tools they need to direct their own learning.

The foundation of my approach is to building confidence and enthusiasm in my pupils. I use a combination of exam questions and structured sessions. This allows the student to become familiar and comfortable with the format of questions, and to more easily identify what the examiner is asking. I like finding out how the world around me works, and am keen to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others. I also enjoy making or tinkering with things - I have customised a button accordion to play bass notes more flexibly, and have added extra buttons to video game controllers. In school I designed and constructed a solar-powered light of adjustable brightness. Patterns appeal to me. When I am not involved in science, I do Scottish Country Dancing, as well as many other genres of folk dancing with intricate symmetrical dance figures. My study of several languages, including Latin and German, allows me to identify parts of scientific terms that I can use to help my students understand them - for instance a recently discovered non-repeating tile is named Einstein not after the physicist but because only one ('ein') type of tile or stone ('stein') is needed to make the pattern. I find Richard Feynman inspiring. He himself got into science through tinkering and discussions with his father about how things worked. He spoke on beauty in nature, and that scientific understanding only enhances its appreciation - as well as seeing the beauty of a flower, a scientist can also wonder at its smaller structure, and how it developed to attract insects to pollinate it. What does this tell us about how bees see the world?

I have three years' experience conducting tutorials in Materials Science at Cambridge University, having myself studied Natural Sciences there, including Physics and Chemistry. Since 2018 I have tutored science and maths independently and for local authorities.One of my pupils has been with me since 2018 - starting with GCSE Physics, and progressing through A Level Biology to finance for adult life. I regularly tutor Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology from KS3 up to A Level. I have also had students in other systems e.g. IB and AP. I have also assisted students with Psychology, Environmental Management and Marine Science. Tutoring Approach:
I enjoy showing you real-world applications of what we are studying. In out lessons, we will draw diagrams and break problems down into bite-size steps. I encourage my students to think of real-life examples of the material and to ask themselves helpful questions such as "What do I already know?", "Is this a sensible answer?" (e.g. compared to the size of household objects or the speed of a walker or car) and "Did I expect those units?".

Personal Description:
I'm a 19-year-old tutor in Sheffield/London, who has been tutoring GCSE for over a year now during my gap year! I genuinely believe there is no better way to teach than to be relatable and reassuring. Being a student myself, I try my best to build a relationship with the student and help identify and conquer any issues lying within their subjects.

I'm truly passionate about tutoring being an older brother to two younger sisters who I've had to teach my whole life and I feel a great sense of purpose after every tutoring lesson!

I've received above GRADE 8 in all GCSE subjects in 2019 and received an A* in chemistry at A-Levels and A in Maths A-Levels.

I'm currently at the University of Sheffield studying Software Engineering.

Teaching Experience:
I've tutored four students during my gap year for 4 students consistently from November to May, helping my students build comfort and confidence in their subject choices. I've tutored both boys and girls aged 14-16 and they have achieved all grades 7+ in the subject I have tutored.

I especially like to help students who find themselves struggling with the subject on a more psychological level with their self-confidence and past experience. I have a passion for these subjects and wish to help others learn more about it.

Tutoring Approach:
I tend to start my tutoring with warm-up questions relating to the previous session as a mini tester for memory. To keep track of content during the session I tend to switch between teaching and worksheets, making sure the student doesn't feel like they're at boring old school again haha. Towards the end, I'll do a brief summary and tester questions on what we've learnt to do.

It also depends on where we are at during the school term where typically towards the end I will focus on past papers more and constantly redirect the students to more resources to help them.

Third year University of Glasgow student, studying Geology, with electives in chemistry, calculus and astonomy. In my spare time I enjoy getting outdoors, reading and sewing!

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored GCSE level chemistry and maths for two years, and worked with young people up to the ages of 16 at summer camps.

Tutoring Approach:
I strongly believe that the best method of learning is practice. I personally like making mindmaps, flashcards and doing plently of practice questions, as these are methods of active recall which is proven to be the best revision method. I find I learn best when I make mistakes, and then I am given guidance on how to fix them, which is how I will aim to teach.

I am always passionate in teaching and learning. My first degree is MA English (Literature). I completed masters in Education from Roehampton University London. I understand teaching is the way to transfer knowledge using pedagogical approaches so I try to bring effective teaching strategies to assist my students.

Personal Description:
I am a student studying Biomedical Science in the University of Sunderland with an integrated placement at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. I have a passion for teaching Maths, Science and English as they were some of my favourite subjects in school, and since it hasn't been very long since I've left my secondary education, I am well versed in those three subjects, science to a further level due to my degree. I hope I can be of help to all students, as I have a very specific methodology of teaching, personalised for each student, and will be happy to have the student's input too. I love teaching, as for me it's something to help the younger generation and support those who need my help.

Teaching Experience:
I teach English, Science and Maths right now to a couple students, however, some of my students have now reached University and no longer need my help. This means that I have space to take in more students for these subjects, though I can teach a range.
I have experience in teaching those younger than me in my school days, where I headed an afterschool session once a week for those who needed help with anything they were taught throughout the year. I also made sure they were prepared for exam season, making sure that they focused on exam papers, and learning and revising through making mistakes with those questions, rather than making notes.
I have helped students with improving their musical talents as well, as I have played the piano and learnt singing to a high level (Grade 8 Piano and Grade 7 singing), and this helped me learn better communication with students as well as their parents.
I also work part time in the NHS, this allows me to be amazing on time management and I am incredibly hard working. I wish to support my students in every way I can.

Tutoring Approach:
I have been taught online as well as helped students online with interview preparation. I found it incredibly fulfilling and much easier than travelling around to places, which can be difficult with those with big workloads or don't have much time during their day. I have taught online during the weekends, as it is much easier to fill up time and space, and think it is the best case scenario for everyone. However, I do understand that doing tutoring online might seem like a waste of time, but I feel as though online tutoring can help students concentrate for longer as they have the ability to do it in their own home.
