Hello! I`m Simon. I hold a PhD in structural biophysics/biochemistry, plus I have an honours degree in biochemistry and a masters in clinical chemistry. I also have eighteen years of experience working in clinical biochemistry laboratories within the NHS. This encompassed various roles and duties, including producing analytical results to help diagnose and manage patients, troubleshooting and problem-solving, discussion of patients with clinical staff, management and supervision of laboratory staff and research and development work. More recently, I also have considerable research experience, both in pure research and from working within the pharmaceutical industry.

I have over ten years of experience working as a self-employed tutor in the sciences and maths. - Acting in a consultative, mentoring and teaching capacity for my guest American supervisor`s research group, especially when he was not around.
- I have presented science and research work in various forums, from informal seminars to international conferences, including a prize-winning lecture I delivered in the USA.

I appreciate that everybody has different expectations and needs, and these always have to be taken into consideration when deciding how best to tutor somebody. Initially, I would seek to find out your strengths and weaknesses and use those to tailor my tutoring to your requirements.

One's ability to learn and understand a subject are inextricably linked to one's interest in it. The classroom nature of school or college education can understandably make it unsuited to students who are struggling with a subject. Similarly, it can lead to the potential of strong students of a subject not being fully recognised and nurtured. In both cases, this can lead to dejection, frustration and disinterest. As a one-to-one tutor, I work very hard to inspire my tutees and make the learning process as enjoyable as possible. I believe in a structured hour of work where the pupil is thoroughly engaged throughout the session. I think that there is a lot of importance in learning 'discovery' which is where the pupil is not spoon-fed information, but rather encouraged to try and work out patterns in the language e.g. grammar. Obviously if the pupil gets stuck I will help them. I also think grammar is an important part of learning Spanish language due to all of the verb conjugations and gender agreements etc. Homework is also important as doing a little each day is definitely one of the best ways to learn.

The style of tutoring needed by individual students will vary. It may start with ensuring understanding of the key concepts in biology at an appropriate level. The jump to A level from GCSE is quite considerable and even the brightest students can struggle initially. Another essential skill needed is the ability to pull together biological content taught in different parts of the syllabus. As exam time approaches, a student has to apply their knowledge and understanding to real exam questions. Practice of exam technique is often a large part of a tutorial session in the run up to A level exams. This is an even more important aspect of my tutoring approach since the A level course recently changed to being examined solely at the end of two years. Using the insights I have learnt from being an examiner I am able to give feedback on individual questions to enable a student to improve their answers.

I have been providing tuition in mathematics for over 20 years and have been a secondary school Mathematics Teacher for over 12 years. I have experience teaching to individual students, to small groups and to classes of up to 35 students. I have helped four year old pupils take their first steps in arithmetic and forty plus year old students finally understand how algebra works.

Tutoring Approach:
During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. In Summer 2019-2022, 100% of my pupils went from D/E grades to A*-B grades, demonstrating my ability to help students achieve their full potential. I am fortunate enough to have mentored and tutored previous students who have excelled in their A-Levels and have gone on to pursue medical degrees at the very same institution where I am studying.

My expertise has also been recognised by a leading research-intensive university in the UK, where I was appointed as a University Widening Participation Fellow in 2021/22. In this role, I provided teaching and mentoring for aspiring medical students aged 9-17 years old both online and in-person.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching approach is personalised, friendly, and engaging. Each lesson begins with a thorough review of the topic, including key concepts, and ample opportunities for students to ask questions. To ensure mastery of the subject, students are provided with high-yield exam questions and worksheets to complete, which we mark together to identify areas of strength and improvement.

My lessons focus on exam technique and effective study habits, two vital components of academic success. I teach students how to use evidence-based techniques such as active recall and spaced repetition to effectively retain information and review it strategically throughout the year.

I provide all students with specialised notes, revision questions, and exam questions tailored to their exam board, free of charge. In addition, assessments are provided every 4-6 weeks to track progress and identify areas for improvement.

But my commitment to my students goes beyond the "hour slot." I am available to answer questions and provide support via phone, email, and messaging. And I never clock-watch during lessons. I am fortunate to have also acquired a team and network of private tutors and professionals from many diverse fields and careers, all of which are happy to offer tuition and mentoring if necessary.
As the pandemic has changed the way we approach education, I have adapted my teaching methods to ensure continuity of learning for my students. Since COVID-19, I have accrued over 300 hours of online teaching and mentoring experience via Zoom and Microsoft Teams, providing a safe and convenient way for students to learn from the comfort of their own homes.

With digital copies of all teaching resources, including notes, homework booklets, and question papers, I am fully equipped to provide a comprehensive and engaging learning environment for my pupils. My priority is always student satisfaction, and I strive to ensure that every student feels supported and confident in their abilities.

My commitment to my students is reflected in my results. 100% of my students continue with online classes after their first lesson, all the way to their exams and university. I am always available to provide mentorship and support to both parents and students, as needed, to ensure that they have the best possible learning experience.
